As much as I love cigars, I've heard that if you're a former cigarette smoker, you really shouldn't smoke cigars anymore either, the reason being that cigarette smokers tend to inhale the cigar smoke, which is just as bad as cigarette smoke.

I just puff on my cigars.

I've been off them for 16 years this month Trik, and you will feel like new. You will notice definite improvement after one year. After seven years you will wonder why people suck on those stinky things.

I call smokers "Chimney Breath!"

i stoped when i got preg. with my daughter in 1988. i lost my mother to emphysema in 1993 then my best friend the same year. so i started to smoke again. but waking up in the morn and not being able to breath will scare the crap out of you
so if you have really stoped then please dont go back becasue its not fun to watch some one you love die like that!!

While I don't smoke and definitely don't support it, I'm surprised more people don't grow their own. It's actually a very pretty plant and keeps many garden pests away. In fact I make a tobacco tea to use as bug killer out in the garden and yard. Very deadly on wasps and widow spiders. Also keeps the fire ants away.

In many states, it's illegal to grow tobacco unless you have the proper permits.

Tilt is right about watching out for oral cancer from cigars. This is a terrible form of cancer and from what I've read the cure rate hasn't changed much in 20 years. Oral tumors can leave you without a tongue and or mouth parts. I know a girl that lost much of her tongue and mouth, the roof of her mouth and saddly her life from oral cancer. If you do survive you may be left with speaking and eating problems. Smoking just isn't worth it.

Way to go!
I was doing 2 packs a day, and quit 16 years ago! Bought lots of gear with all the money I didn't spend on cigarettes. Saw a sign the other day, they are $5.35 a pack here in Chicago. That's $321/month! Hey, maybe I DO need that new tent!

I'm quit for four years now, but I could take up smoking again at the drop of a hat. I find it's always with me, lurking there at the very back of my mind. I seem to remember reading nicotine leaves receptors in the brain that are activated when you smoke again, which seems about right. My father was a smoker, quit for a year or two, but died of lung cancer, anyway. Typical. Both my grandfathers were smokers. One went of bronchitus, the other, though he'd been quit for twenty five years, said there wasn't a day went by when he didn't think about smoking. My advice, don't take it up in the first place, but if yo have, don't expect being a non-smoker to be easy. Then again, the things in life that are the most important seldom are. The way I got through was to consider who was the tougher, me or that damn weed.
Finally, my friend summed it up well when he described smoking as like wearing a very tight pair of shoes just so you can have the pleasure of taking them of - which is about rght.

I have never smoked cigs - tried a pipe (like Grandpa's) for a while but everybody still told me oral cancer was a risk. Now I just eat ice cream.

Congrats to those who have quit. Now I just need to work on my parents who don't seem to want to - tough battle.

I've noticed that both my parents have the capability to quit a habit anytime and make it look easy. I've also got the same strength.

I can go cold turkey and use very little will power to do it. Doesn't matter if it's chocolate, coffee, tobacco, etc.

On the other hand, I've seen people that don't have the strength to stop their habits. I've read that it's genetic.

What do you guys think ??
MDSHiker
6:50:03 AM
8/10/02

I don't know if it's genetic or not, but I have a relative that's a heavy smoker. He had a heart attack a few years ago and now has an implanted defibrilator. He smokes more now than when he had the heart attack and cannot or will not quit. Whatever they put in these things must be powerful. Like heroin or worse.

food for thought....humm?
Subject: Setting Straight Misconceptions

Q: If I stop smoking, will I live longer?
A: Nope. Smoking is a sign of individual statement and peace of mind. If you stop, you'll probably stress yourself to death in record time.

Q: I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is this true?
A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that's it... don't
waste them on exercise. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your
heart will not make you live longer; that's like saying you can extend the
life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap.

Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?
A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than an efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain?
Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy
vegetable). And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended daily
allowance of vegetable slop.

Q: Is beer or wine bad for me?
A: Look, it goes to the earlier point about fruits and vegetables. As we
all know, scientists divide everything in the world into three
categories: animal, mineral, and vegetable. We all know that beer and wine are not animal, and they are not on the periodic table of elements, so that only leaves one thing, right? My advice: Have a burger and a beer and enjoy
your liquid vegetables.

Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?
A: Well, if you have a body, and you have body fat, your ratio is one to one. If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one, etc.

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program?
A: Can't think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No Pain - Good.

Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you?
A: You're not listening. Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil. In fact, they're permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be bad for you?

Q: What's the secret to healthy eating?
A: Thicker gravy.

Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle?
A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You should only be doing sit-ups, if you want a bigger stomach.

Q. Is chocolate bad for me?
A: Are you crazy? Cocoa beans... Another vegetable. It's the best feel good food around!

I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about food and diets. Have a cookie... flour is a veggie!

Citori
Keep telling yourself that when you're spitting blood into a bucket by the side of your hospital bed.
Actually, you may not be able to because the cancer's got into your brain and you're so confused you can't string the words together. You'll know you're in pain, and you'll know you're scared, but you won't really reconise your relatives sat round your bed. Well, maybe, sometimes, just enough to scare you all the more at the state of your situation.

My maternal grandparents both died of lung cancer after smoking for many years. I helped care for both of them before their death.
Both had also quit for a long time before that. I watched my grandmother suffer with emphysema and gasp for each breath for many years prior to her death at age 58. She was an incredibly strong woman, tiny but bore 6 kids at home, raced boats, snowshoed to hunt and kill her deer, etc., but those nasty butts killed her.

Foolishly, I took up smoking as a teenager, but quit the suckers about 14 years ago. When we go hiking, I make sure to tell my nephews that the reason I need to stop and breathe is because I smoked once upon a time.

Don't ever give up quitting no matter how many times it takes to quit forever!
