REI was offering the American Harvester (which is the one we all bought) for roughly $25 plus shipping and tax, which made it $32-something. I bought it as a hedge against inflation and put it to immediate use.

Even at $40 it's well worth it. Besides making cheap jerky and other neat dried foods, it's fun. The mind positively overloads with ideas for gourmet meals for the trail.

That was an REI-outlet 'deal of the day'. Prices are usually only good for that day. You snooze you lose. True gear addicts make http://www.rei.com/outlet/index.html their home page.

My pop bought an American Harvester about twelve years ago and uses the thing for herbs every fall for two-three weeks nonstop. Those are fine machines. Much better than the MR. Coffee we have. His has temp controls and all the whistles and bells. Sounds like you all got a nice deal.
