what a loss! “” 7:50:04 PM 8/12/02 7:51:09 PM 8/12/02 “Thanks for sharing that SN. I agree. What a loss. I've admired both of their works.” 8:12:33 PM 8/12/02 “Ugh! Stunned. Galen Rowell will have a name that lives on. He is right there with Ansel Adams. He and his wife will be missed. His work and his passion will be missed too. Galen was a pre-eminent Sierra photographer. "...his special brand of participatory wilderness photography in which the photographer transcends being an observer with a camera to become an active participant in the image being photographed. " A source of inspiration lost, but but he'll never to be forgotten. Can only hope for the best for the families of those who lost their lives.” 8:17:40 PM 8/12/02 Oh my.... “Galen was a speaker at OSU Lectures and Convocations Series this last year and I was impressed with his love for the natural world and the people in it. He will be remembered for many contributions. I feel I have lost a friend even though I was only in the audience at one talk. He was one of those folks you just know is here to benefit the world with his gifts.” 8:28:32 PM 8/12/02 “I've never seen thier works, but now I want to. If thay are anywhere near as talented as Ansel, it's s shame. I guess it's a shame either way.” 8:43:22 PM 8/12/02 What a shame... “I love their work. My Favorite is..."Stormy sunset over Evolution Lake, John Muir Trail, High Sierra"” 9:05:11 PM 8/12/02 “Damn! that is nice. Do they do B&W's too?” 9:06:53 PM 8/12/02 “Oh my god! I got chills when I read that thread title and thought, oh my this can't be true?!!? Galen Rowell's book on adventure photography is the first great book on photography I ever got. To see his images and have him share his thoughts on envisioning the photo, taking the photo, perhaps little ideas you'd never thought of... and of course he always plugged environmental and animal causes. I always figured he and his wife made a great team, with her being a pilot and all. And he was in such great shape. He'd run into the mountains, figuring his trail running was a way to get to a far-off location, without necessarily backpacking in somewhere. (although he did that too, of course) And it was just maybe two years ago, they moved to the Owens Valley from the San Francisco area, to be near the eastern Sierras and have access to the mountains all the time. He also wrote a column in Outdoor Photographer monthly. A great loss of talent indeed. He was (they were) more than just photographers with their concerns for the world.” 11:05:52 PM 8/12/02 “they had 60 great yrs and pursued their passions. They lived a full, exciting life that many can only dreamm about. You never know when yer number is gonna be called but you sure as f@@@ better plan some good times in yer schedule...” 11:06:49 PM 8/12/02 “A local weatherman brought this sad news to my attention. We've all lost a emense talent.” 11:29:41 PM 8/12/02 “Just one more bit of evidence that you are more likely to get killed doing ordinary stuff like riding in a car or plane than hiking or mountain climbing. Awful news, really. The newspaper said there is an upcoming story on China in Nat'l Geo with his work in it - looking forward to seeing it.” 10:14:33 AM 8/13/02 “I always wanted to stop in at their gallery in Bishop. It was on the main drag right down the street from La Cassita. Hope it's still there the next time I'm that way.” 10:58:55 AM 8/13/02 “How about saluting them by noting others of their kind? I admire the work of Tom Till and have been to his gallery in Moab, Utah. Stop if you get the chance. I feel he embodies some of the same things as the Rowells. I've also visited Michael Fatali's gallery near Zion N'tl Park. He shoots great stuff, including a lot of slot canyons, but the guy just doesn't "get it." He's the one fined for lighting a fire and causing smoke damage to Delicate Arch at Arches N'tl Park, yes, the arch you see on the license plates. No environmental concern there; just wanted the photo.” 11:42:06 AM 8/13/02 “I feel the same sense of loss I felt when Gene Shoemaker died. The comparison with Ansel Adams is apt and to the point ... powerful landscapes.” 11:59:47 AM 8/13/02
