Probable cause is de-forestation.

Reminds me of the disasters caused by some of the Maoist campaigns in China (the elimination of sparrows, the destruction of grasses, the attack on bourgeois sentimentality about trees....)

hmmm....
Deforestation in China? A socialist nation? I thought these enviro-liberals favored socialism and a strong central government. At least that's the all their 'solutions' are.

In Russia, vast acreages of forest that were exploited under the Soviet regime have been turned over to private (read: capitalist) management and are making a rapid comeback. Reforestation is occurring at a rapid rate and proper harvesting is returning the forests to health.

On a side note the earliest recorded instance of a forest practice law is China circa 2500 bc, regulating harvesting on steep slopes.

gee gordon, if there were more lawyers in China to enforce that law, the landslide wouldn't have happened.

Conclusion: Lawyers save lives.

Deforestation, Philippines, Marcos reportedly sold the timber rights to his buddies. This was a tropical rain forest.

chinese deforestation
has been really bad in Tibet When I saw Galen Rowell's presentation here in Oregon he told about how he went into Tibet with the sister of the Dalai Lama and she was aghast because she did not see ANY wildlife whereas before 1959 there were all kinds of wild blue sheep, wild yaks and other animals that were visible to the casual observer
as they traveled through the country, truly horrid the ecological tragedy, one Lama that came to visit here in the US was trying to find what trees could grow fast at very high elevations because near the remains of his monastery the Chinese cut down all the trees and the monks have been trying to plant trees but so few of them survive and they grow so slowly at the extreme high elevations, he said they tried everything they could but in the winter the rodents are starving and they girdle some of the trees
very sad story

brown clouds? land slides? deforestation? well it's obviously the fault of GEORGE BUSH and DICK CHENEY since it happened under their watch! they prolly had secrete meetings with the chinese gubment and planned to sell all the trees to toothpic factories who polluted the air & made them all rich! they should elect clinton to solve all their problems.

rodents? like squirrels? uh oh

isn't there a couple ways to prevent trunk damage?

i wonder if any of this bio-gen tech helped create a strain that might actually reforest there?

i've got tree's out front (austree?) that grow 1-3ft every summer! but elevation is definitely not an issue.

and they have a lifespan of maybe 50yrs

don't chimps and humans share 98.6% of the same DNA? is that not close enough??

I don't know jmitch. Assuming that to be a fact, I would say 1.4% of the DNA makes 100% of the difference.
