Why bring up race? That question is so far off one almost can't answer it.

There was still an issue with the Subway customer. The cell phone was a red herring.

The most interesting thing about your question is that it shows that you presumed that because there was a "problem", that it was race related.

The cell phone wasn't what tipped me off. It was the fact that there was obviously a line of people waiting for the register, including the check-out person's unease.

White people are less likely to ignore other people's physical existence. White people who are annoying on the cell phone do it because they are unaware that they are creating a disturbance. Black people that do talk loud on cells are the same way.

The difference is in conscious respect of others. The black person is more likely to think "these people can wait ... I'm chill'n funky, so these people can too" - Actually, he's more likely to just assume they can wait (that they're in no rush) and it doesn't occur to him that they are impatient and being "disrespected".

White people are more aware (key word) of the other people's impatience when they are physically nearby.

It's about mindset. Are you chill'n ... relax'n ... got somewhere to go? ... take it easy, bro ...

Put all that in a pot, stir it 'round a bit, add a dash of experience/logic and statistical observation, and you come up with the conclusion.

I wish I were more like that. It can be a good thing.

It amazes me how if you say "black", people (lots of you even) just assume it's a bad thing. THAT is racist. Observing cultural behaviors is ... "observant".

“Sarge, I didn't follow the thread, but I get the jist of what you are saying in your last post and it's true that you can attribute some "ways" to certain groups of people, whether you group men together or woman, or group people by regligion or color. Of course they are generalizations, but sometimes certain things are true pertaining to certain groups of people to a certain extent.

Culture is involved, religion is involved, social status, class distinctions, etc. which makes certain groups similar in their ways and thinking. That's just life and people who want to say that we are all the same are so wrong. We are all different and when people come to realize that and NOT try to lump everyone together in one neat little package is when there will be more understanding of that we are different and it's okay to be that way, as long as our behavior does not hurt another person.

My husband told me a story about a couple who had a friend over of another culture for dinner, and she did not want to eat what they were serving, so they were pissed off. It was a cultural thing. So understanding and recognizing and accepting people's differences is more important than saying we are all the same, because we aren't and that's where the REAL misunderstanding take place.”
