Ya know how someone will mention a movie or song or something you've never heard of... and then suddenly you hear about it or see it numerous times after that.

Or, you learn a new word and you're suddenly hearing that word everywhere.

Is that a word for that???

synchronicity!

isn't it the best thing in the world??
"What I found were 'coincidences' which were connected so meaningfully that their 'chance' concurrence would be incredible. By way of example, I shall mention an incident from my own observation. A young woman I was treating had, at a critical moment, a dream in which she was given a golden scarab. While she was telling me this dream I sat with my back to the closed window. Suddenly I heard a noise behind me, like a gentle tapping. I turned round and saw a flying insect knocking against the window pane from outside. I opened the window and caught the creature in the air as it flew in. It was the nearest analogy to a golden scarab that one finds in our latitudes, a scarabeid beetle, the common rose-chafer (Cetonia aurata), which cointraryt to its usual habits had evidently felt an urge to get into a dark room at this particular moment. I must admit that nothing like it ever happened to me before or since, and that the dream of the patient has remained unique in my experience."
-- Carl Jung, in his essay, Synchronicity: An Acausal Connecting Principle

This sort of thing happens ofter. Makes me believe that it is connected, somehow, to "premonition - an advance warning."

déjà vu - the 'already seen'
presque vu - the 'almost seen'
jamais vu - the 'never seen'
aprés vu - when you get the feeling something is 'after you'

synchronicity is when two things occur at the same time, meaningfully. one event does not cause the other, though. like, you're thinking of a song, and you turn on the radio and that very song is on. when it first started happening to me, i thought i was going crazy (crazier)! but it happens in a lot of ways, to a lot of people. think of astrology...a person's personality can be predicted, just because the stars and planets were in a certain place when he or she was born. bizarre! i love it, i love it... that essay by Jung is really, really good...you should get it if you're wondering about it. it's a really small book at the bookstore, probably costs about $5.

I didn't know there was a word for that. I just thought those things you now notice were always there, its just that you didn't pay attention to them before.

Are you trying to write a paper?

SG - no paper. just curious.

Synchronicity is close. I'm not sure it's exactly right. As you stated, Lyra, it ususally implys things happening at the same time.

A friend of mine suggested Serendipity. Again, close, but not exactly right.

Either way, these are fun ideas to talk about!

hmmm...maybe i wasn't exactly right in saying that they have to occur literally "at the same time." if your experience of two things somehow coincides, or if you notice a pattern, like hearing the same word you just learned many times suddenly after that, that would still be considered synchronicity.

Strange, Lyra, we are in the same business (net surfing that is, hehehe). So, does that mean you read "up and coming" writer's crap all day and decide who has enough grammar skills to get published? What does an editor do? Can you recommend any good reads? What other words do you know? (Psst, I would love to read for a living.)

weellll, newgirl, it's like this. the company i work for publishes the equivalent of a telephone book, only it's about the television & cable industry. about which i could care less. now we're in the "researching stage," which means i'm supposed to be calling all these television stations and cable operators and asking them things like who is their general manager and how many megahertz they have. (thank god for my outside researchers is all i have to say, LOL!) when i got here, the researching and the editing staffs weren't combined, but now we're all one big crappy family. ;-) in a couple of months, i'll be helping to proofread the book (which is 4 huge volumes); it's an annual publication. i originally wanted to do the kind of work you're thinking of, but i got offered this job first, and the people here are sooper-nice, and it's sooper-relaxing, and i keep getting raises (they haven't caught on), and the time it does a-fly. so here i am, 2 years later...
:-)

okay, now i have to go out and get lunch, even though i have crap all over my pants from the escalator this morning. wish me luck! ;-)
lyra

Geo, that is almost impossible. I would have to move to a 3rd World country to take a pay cut from this job. The schedule and seemingly unlimited net surfing is what keeps me here.

Sounds great Lyra. You seem to be staying w/ your job for the same reason I stay at mine (well, minus the super nice people and relaxing atmosphere and raises). But, again, who can complain, I get 2 wks. a month off and then there is the whole net surfing again.

reticulated activation system ???? Or something like that.

My wife had one of those self motivation type tapes. I listened to it. The power of positive thinking type crap. Anyhoo . . .the guy described the process of saying affirmations as engaging your "reticulated activation system" (or something close to that).

That is, if you are attuned to "thinking postive thoughts" then you will have positive experiences

The acronym is RAS.

Now when my wife and I have the phenomna described here . . .(boy, I have been seeing yellow beetle bugs everywhere), we describe it as our RAS working overtime.

Hope that confuueses things.
