“I had to take my cat in cause she's not been herself lately. She lost 2 pounds in 8 days. The vet kept her overnight so he could run some tests and the plan was that I would pick her up today and we'd talk about what's wrong.

Well, I just hung up w/ him. And, it turns out I'm now going in to put her down. She's experiencing kidney failure. Once a cat gets to the point where symptoms are evident... it's too late. And, it's usually a very short period of time between the sypmtoms and death. She's 12 years old. Which isn't young, but it isn't old either.

Growing up, we had lots of pets. Several cats. Even had to put a couple of them down.

This one is different. This is the first time it's MY pet and not the family pet... And, it's not easy.

To make matters worse, the other cat in our household is her son. I'm afraid that he'll go through some sort of depression when he figures out his mama isn't coming home.

“I'm very sorry to hear about your kitty. I've had cats since I could walk and I know it's very hard when a pet dies or you have to put one down. My current feline companion is over 20 years old and getting pretty feeble. I do not look forward to the day...”

My/our family cat (from my mamas house) went through something like that when she lost her kittens. Remembering the good times has always worked for me...”

i had a cat when i was younger and i remember when we had to put him down. god i think i cried for months after that.
i know this may sound stange but im going to tell you this story anyway.

my mother had a cat named sweety.
it was the love of her life. this cat hated everyone but her.
she was a very sick woman and knew that she was not going to be around for very long. we just didnt know how sick she was becasuse she didnt tell us. anyway she told me that when she dies we are to put the cat to sleep.
well she did die and thats what we did.
but talking to the furn. director
we told her about how much she loved the cat.
i guess she felt sorry for us and suggested that we put the cat in the coffin wiht my mom by her feet. (you see she was going to be cremated (SP))
well he thought about this and said yes.
she only made us promise NOT to tell anyone that they did it!
so she was buried with her fav. pet.
i got half the ashes and my brother got the other half to take to Canada and bury her
the joke is that i got more cat then anything else.

The most faithful female companion I've ever had was my old cat.
She was a charmer and outrageous flirt. My ex didn't like her because the cat liked me better than her. It's been a couple of years since she passed. I still miss that old cat.”

“Gosh Tara, you've been through a lot with your animals lately. So sorry to hear that. I dread the day I'll have to hear news like that.”

“That's tough, Tarabull. Losing a pet is always very hard.”

“Tara - I went through that with my cat of 16 years. She hid her symptoms very well so when she got obviously sick it was too late. She also had kidney failure. I had had her from when I was in my early 20's to my late 30's and in 3 states. It was definately the end of an era when she passed out of my life. My heart goes out to you.”

“cat's seem to me to all have individual personalities. i never liked cat's till i got one (rescued from a construction site). big black tiger male, 1 eye, chipped tooth, can hold down an entire city block. 15# of muscle and belli fat. plays fetch w/tinfoil balls and can knock frisbees out of the air. i thnk i'll be bummed when he goes.

ower cat smokey, was put down, because of kidney failure, to last feb, so please except my suppoet, we also have a 128lb bullmastiff, who became very depressed when this happened, she would cuddle up with smokey when she got sick, at the time of her death angel(the dog) stayed right with her, smokey past lying beside her for warmth, angel has never been the same, we bought her a bunny rabitt in place of smokey, and she takes care of her, cleans and watches her all the time,,,,,,, i never thought a bullmastiff would take to another animal like that, after smokey but she did and all is well take care...... nomad”

I have a friend who recently put her dog down and said it was so difficult for her she'll never get another pet as long as she lives...

It's amazing and wonderful how cats, dogs and the like can be such a huge part of our lives. :-)”

I had to put down both a dog (partly expected because of uncontrollable epilepsy) and a cat (completely unexpected) in the same weekend once.

“We buried her last night at the bottom of a hill behind my parents house. It was just after the sun went down and the frogs and crickets were talking loud. It was hard... and nice!”
