I like Deliverance as well. Just wish that Bert Reynold's had traded places with Ned Beatty - I think old Bert's in the closet...

Great rental movie!!!
Prowler - Jeremiah Johnson:

"Western (1972). Sydney Pollack directs this notable picturesque film inwhich a solitary man named Jeremiah Johnson (Robert Redford) battles ruthless Indians, who use him as the target of a long-awaited vendetta, and the merciless elements of nature, in search of peace. Set in the mid-19th century, after the Civil War, the film centers on Jeremiah as he becomes disillusioned with the ways of his civilization and the ravages of war, and he sets out determined to survive in the Rocky Mountain wilderness by himself."

MPAA Rating: PG.
Starring: Robert Redford, Will Geer, Stefan Gierasch, Josh Albee, Allyn Ann McLerie

I found out today that "Jeremiah Johnson" is loosely based on the story of an actual Mountain Man.

I don't know where you got your review from Phil, but if you watch it closely, it seems to be set in the 1840's, just after the Mexican War. Not too many films about that period in American History, it's like history stopped in 1814 and picked up again in 1861.

It's one of my favorite movies.

I've never seen the whole movie. I sort of remember one scene about him (Redford) and a cabin and a bear?

If you read books, Bernard de Voto did much of his work on that time period

It took me quite a search to come up with this one's name, but -- although it's kinda dopey -- I can remember liking it. And I wasn't even involved with the outdoors back when it was out!!! (although...cough, cough... maybe Tom Berenger alone explains it!! LOL!!)

"Shoot to Kill" from 1988. I found a review on Blockbuster:

Sidney Poitier makes his long-overdue return to films in the 1988 thriller "Shoot to Kill." Poitier plays an FBI agent, on the trail of an elusive killer.

Reluctantly teamed with tracker Tom Berenger, the citified Poitier braves the wilds of the Pacific Northwest in search of his quarry. For Berenger, the pursuit is personal; the killer, whose identity is not immediately revealed, has joined a hunting party being guided through the country by the tracker's girlfriend Kirstie Alley.

Though only bearing the slightest resemblance to Real Life (you'll love the scene between lifelong city-dweller Poitier and a huge grizzly bear), "Shoot to Kill" delivers the goods in the suspense department. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Oh yeah, it has a great scene on a suspension bridge!!

There was a movie called "Night of the Grizzy" (1966). I also remember a movie similar to Jeremiah Johnson just called The Mountain Men (1980)
There was also a movie that was about a family that moved from LA to the Rocky Mountains. It was called the Adventures of the Wilderness Family (1975). They had another Wilderness family movie in 1977. From what I remember the movie was good with lots of scenery and wildlife.

."Where a River Runs Through"

It's about a family in Montana. Several scenes of two brothers and their father flyfishing. Just finished seeing it on TV.

Nowslimmer,
"A River Runs Through It" is one of my favorite movies.Always reminds me of my brother and I.

By the way, I'm going to Montana in September for a week-long workshop in photography. I'll be staying in Missoula by the Blackfoot River and just down the road from Lolo Pass. Can't wait. Hope to get a couple days hiking in while I'm there.

Oh Oh OH! "Legends of the Fall" and "Thelma and Louise".... hmmmmmm, or am I just thinking of Brad Pitt?? LOL!! Ok, perhaps "Legends of the Fall" anyway!! As I recall, a lot of outdoor scenery.

A lot of Westerns feature the outdoors in a major role. I like Westerns of all types. Even bad Westerns.

"Dances with Wolves" was very cool. Getting the Western from the DISILLUSIONED SOLDIER/NATIVE AMERICAN point of view. I've been to where they shot the "winter scenes," up past Gunlock Falls (I think it is), up a bad road, off South Dakota's Spearfish Canyon. Beautiful area!!

Jeremiah Johnson was a real Mountain Man, and survived a Grizz attack.
I'm with you Phil, this is my favorite outdoor movie.
The movie Ewker is thinking of, had Charelton Heston and Brian Keith as the leads. Great movie!! My number two choice. See em both!!

Lizs, you are correct about Spearfish canyon. I took my dad on a trip through South Dakota last year right after 9/11. We managed to enjoy ourselves in spite of all that was happening. We caught the aspens at their peak. Also, Jerimiah Johnson was loosely based on the exploits of "Liver Eatin Johnson". He was known to canabalize the natives he killed. I guess that was a little too real for Robert Redford. Still one of my favorite flicks. Will Geer was so cool. Who would have thought Grandpa Walton was such a wildman?

Another one that covers that time period a little is "How The West Was Won" It can be a little hoky at times, but still pretty good.

I used to watch the "How the West Was Won" series when it was re-broadcast on TNN (I think that was it) James Arness was the father. It was Western, so of course I liked it. Pretty hokey, but had interesting themes, such as when the daughter was all ready to marry the Mormon, then freaked when she met his other wife. LOL

Just saw "Jeramiah Johnson," on DVD. See it. I thought of Dances With Wolves but this movie is much more realistic, thus much better. A work of Art.

Right!
That is one great movie. I just wish I could find it on DVD. Had to settle for the spooled variety the other day. Will keep searching.

BTW, "Dream West" (about Captain Freemonts expeditions) is not bad either. "Man in the Wilderness" is another good one.

Want to read?Check out "Tale of Valor" about the Lewis and Clark Expedition. It is still one of the best books I have ever laid eyes on and is one of those that is hard to put down once started. "Pemmican" is a good moutain man read.

Del Que
"I aint never seen em but my common sense tells me that the Alps are foothills, and the Andes are for children to climb. Yesssir, these here Rocky Mountains are the marrow of the world!" Del Que (Jeramiah Johnson)

"I told my pap and mam that I was gonna go up in the mountains and be a mountainman....acted like they was GUT shot. They said son make your life go here, HERE is where the peoples is." Del Que

Mountainman:"Can you skin griz pilgrim?"

Jeramiah:"I can skin most anything."

Mountainman:"Sure are COCKY for a starvin pilgrim!"

Mountainman:"Are you sure you know how to skin griz?"

Jeramiah:"Just as fast as you can bring em."

Mountainman:"Waugh!...whahaha!"

Later....Jeramiah hears a ruckus outside the cabin and goes to the door and sees the old mounainman running and laughing. Right behind him is one huge griz in hot pursuit through nearly waist high snow. He leads the griz right into the cabin with Jeramiah and jumps out the window on the other side and says,"SKIN THAT PILGRIM AND I'll GET YOU ANOTHER!!"

Ever seen "A Cry In The Wild" 'bout a kid getting stranded near an alpine lake deep in the wilderness. The bugs drive him insane till he figures out smearing mud all over himself helps. He cusses out a bear but other than that good family fun.
