tater gun, oh tater gun

“there's has to be some of you people out there that's played with a tater gun. i have seen several that were cool and worked great, but it's been a couple years. they are alot of fun.


does anybody have a good blueprint for one? i have all the materials, that's not a problem. i just don't know what measurements to use. maybe one of you engineers could whip up a drawing of one. Lord knows you people have time to post all friggin day while your sposed to be workin, LOL!”

I have an older cousin and when I was in h.s. he had a pair of night vision goggles (don't ask where he gets this stuff, he also has quite a bit of dynamite). Anyway, we used to take the spud gun, the night vision goggles, and some Jack (Daniels) and shoot stuff.

“Spud guns are soooo much fun. Brings out the kid in me. A guy had one at work with a 2" barrel. I made one with an 1 1/2" barrel. Lots more muzzle velocity. Use hairspray as a propellant, the cheaper the better! Funny story:

One Friday night I was visiting my kids (they live with their mother in a low income housing project), and I had the tater gun in the back, ready for a party on Saturday. Well....since all the kids were there, we went into the woods and touched her off a few times. Then I was thinking that maybe the neighbors wouldn't like it much, even though we were 200 feet from houses, so we put it away. Then we left and got 5 or 6 miles down the road. I saw some blue lights behind me, way back, so as they came closer I pulled over. He pulled right in behind me!! And waited for another police car to join them. They got out of the cruiser, unsnapped their gun straps (at which time I felt it prudent to place my hands on the top of my steering wheel and not move until directed) and they came and asked for license, registration and proof of insurance. It all checked out and they came back and asked if I had any weapons in the truck with me. I told them there were none in front. Then they asked about the cap of my truck, and I sheepishly told them I had a tater gun. They inquired about how it works and I told them: shove a potato down the barrel, open the other end and spray some of this cheap hairspray in and close it. Aim and press the bar-b-que ignitor, it's a lot of fun, would you officers like to try it? They laughed and said no thanx, so you don't use any form of gunpowder? I said nope. They said have a good day and left. I still got my tater gun, er a friend has it right now.

“I made a piston-style pneumatic cannon. I was too cautious to use flammable propellent. Eventually, blasting steelies through plywood lost its thrill, and it's gathering dust in the garage.”

“Oh yeah, I also used it to set throwline in tall trees for awhile. Then I got a professional slingshot and no longer needed it.”

“I like the tater gun and it is really portable but for the really long range shots, I use a tater cannon. It uses compressed air and sports a 6 foot barrel, half of which is encased in the chamber.

It has a really cool but simple firing mechanism and is breach load instead of muzzle loading.

You can also shoot water from it but the recoil can be dangerous!

I play a Martin HD28 2R now. Used to own a Gibson hollow body electric (miss it sorely) and an Ibanez (Les Paul style). It was OK but the intonation was a bear. My first electric was a Gibson double cut-away that was nice. If I ever go electric again, I will pobably go with a Strat and plug it into a tube amp.”
