If you are bored you can try these tests
I went to the state career center today and wanted to apply for a job that required that I type 70 wpm. The interviewer ask me if I noticed that and I said yes, I'm almost positive I can type 90 wpm. She looked at me like I was crazy and said most people can't even type 70 WPM. She also told me to come back tomorrow and take a typing test given by the career center so I can have a certificate to prove it.

I've been searching online tonight trying to find the best typing test to prove to myself that I can type at a decent speed. I found this website that has many types of tests available. Some you have to pay for, but several are free. Tests range from typing to medical terminology to office skills.

If you are bored.. check it out:

Skill Tests

btw.. I can type 88 wpm with 99% accuracy! I'll show that lady tomorrow she doesn't know what she's talking about.

I don't know how to dictate.. that was another requirement of the job I was talking about. The wages are high for those types of secretary jobs. I'm fresh out of college with a B.S in business administration. Nobody else wants to hire me because I dont have experience. I spent the last 5 years of my life working on a degree, not work experience. Seems like now that I have a degree everyone just wants someone with a hs diploma and 3-5 years of experience. It makes me feel as though I went to college for nothing. The secretary type jobs, especially in a government setting, are the closest I'm going to get to a decent salary right now.

Okay-

57 WPM, 100% accuracy.

That's with..

*One hand tied behind my back
*One eye closed
*50% of a chilled Corona Extra in me (so my fingers were cold)
*Tapped my feet in cadence
AND
*Spoke out loud each letter as it was typed.

j/k! (sorta-kinda-maybe-but-not-really)

Miss Opie, I'm going for a degree in Business Management & Communications. I'm sure the reality is that I am going nowhere fast. I have a friend who recently got a degree in Environmental Science, she's working in a bookstore. Everyone wants experience, but won't be the ones to hire her and help her get going. I have another friend w/ a degree in School Counseling, same situation. He is applying all over the U.S. I have two other friends experiencing the same thing and one of them has a degree in Computer Science and he's not even getting hired. Maybe we are all just throwing are time and money away.

I think the current statistic is something like 60% of jobs are acquired through networking. I know that is how my kids got most of their jobs. My daughter just graduated in June with a degree in Business Adminstration (Marketing Management option). She had gotten a job at a small insurance company through her friend. The owner spotted her potential and hired here full time after she graduated to run the office (Salary plus commission and she gets commission on his sales since she will be handling the accounts).

Congratulations and good luck!

That's the way it is during a slowdown. Eventually things will pick back up again, and your degree will be worth something.

It's just like a pendulum. You're only wasting your time and money in school if your major is something like "Ceramics".

ObFullDisclosure: When I met my brother's second wife, I knew she was in school, so I asked her what her major was. Her answer? Ceramics. I stood there like a hooked fish, my mouth opening and closing as I tried to come up with a response other than "Are you insane?" She noticed my reticence, and said "Yeah, I know, I can't make any money doing it until I get my Master's." Then I knew the truth: She was getting a Bachelor's Degree in throwing pots. Pots!

Scene: gojo's class, Friday, 10 minutes before the bell rings. gojo is attempting to teach his charges something useful.

Slacker 1: Duuuude! We're supposed to have a test today, but Gnarly Backpacking Teacher-Dude has forgotten!

Slacker 2: I told you he tokes up man! No teacher forgets a test!

Slacker 1: Whatever dude! I'm just glad he forgot! I totally don't get this shop assignment!

Slacker 3: Dudes! Quit talking about it, he'll overhear you and remember!

All three slackers straighten up and pretend to listen as gojo instructs them on the lesson for the day

Bell rings

gojo: All right students, have a great weekend, and I'll see you Monday.

Slacker 1: Uh, thanks Mr. <insert gojo's last name here>, I'm sure we will!

All three slackers make it out into the hall before bursting out into peals of laughter, high-fiving each other, and otherwise celebrating

Scene ends

I'm not trying to make you feel any worse newgirl but I just graduated in may with a degree in Business Administration and a concentration in healthcare. I have had no luck with the job search! I think just like bitpusher said, its just because of an economic slowdown. Right now I feel pretty useless myself. I spend my days interviewing for jobs that only want to pay 8.00/hr. I'm willing to start out at that rate, if they offer me the opportunity of advancement. I interviewed at one doctor's office and she just wanted someone to be a receptionist forever! She said there was no opportunity for growth. Why would I want to spend the last 5 years of my life going to school if I just wanted to get a job as a receptionist? I dont think so!
Miss Opie

What you'll get from a job like that is networking. You'll get to talk to all the drug reps that come in everyday, make friends with them, and you'll find out from them when openings come up at their companies. No, there's usually no path up from receptionist at the doctor's office, but that doesn't mean the job is useless. You could just use it to get where you want to go.

Remember what Phil said about 60% of jobs being obtained through networking. The job I have now I wouldn't have even heard about except I told a friend I was looking, and he knew that this company was looking for someone.

So when they say they just want someone to be a receptionist, just smile and say okay. But make sure it's a larger doctor's office, with 4 or 5 docs in it. You'll get more drug rep traffic that way.

I do have a little good news. My mom's friend owns a pharmaceutical company and I met with him last week and he gave me an application to fill out. He said it will be 2-3 weeks before I hear anything from it and he said he really wishes I had sales experience, but he is going to do what he can. I know I can't get my hopes up, but it looks like it will be a great opportunity for me.

I also have an interview tomorrow at an OB-GYN office in Athens. The lady sounded really excited that I have a degree and she said there will be room for advancement.

BTW bitpusher.. have you ever heard of West on research park? I have an interview there tomorrow too.

Is that the company name or the location? West Research Park probably means West of Research Park Blvd., but you can't be too sure.

It is the company name. West Corporation and its located in the same building as lockheed martin and taldyne brown. I have an interview tomorrow and I'm still not quite sure what the company does. They just had an ad in the paper. One job was hiring customer service reps for Direct TV, the other job was for customer service reps dealing with one of their customers, an insurance company.

It's not a marketing call center. They work as a customer service agent for many different businesses. For example the job they were hiring for was for a customer service rep for Direct TV. The lady said that every possible problem is listed on the computer and when people call in for help you just read the information to them.

The ad I was actually responding to was for an insurance customer service rep. The insurance job position had much better hours.. Direct TV was 2nd shift. She thought I was there for the Direct TV and said they arent starting the insurance training for 3 more weeks. I still don't want a job like that!

I think the job is for uneducated people. I had to take a test to be able to apply and I scored almost perfect on all the test, way above their requirements.

Yah, I'd hold out for something closer to my abilities if I were you.

My favorite story about that is after I finished my degree, I took a job in retail for minimum wage, for the Christmas season. I was still interviewing, of course, for jobs in my field. When I finally found one, they were ready for me to start that day. Unfortunately, I felt I needed to give the place I was working two weeks notice. Mistake. The amount of money I would have made in 7 days at my new job would have been more than I made in the two and a half months I was at the retail place.
