If you come to CA, I'll help work out a route.

Come in the winter and we'll go snowboarding, snowshoeing, hot tubbing . . . .

I'm not sure exactly what hot tubbing invovles however if it goes in the line with snow shoeing and snowboardnig I would guess that it would mean to strap hot tubs to your feet and either slide down a hill or walk around in the snow.
AM I CLOSE?

Oops! That was meant to be snowboarding, snowshoeing, skiing or whatever during the day, camp out in Long Valley and soak in the natural hot tubs at night.

Better?

Pecos Wilderness should be on your list of consideration. Most of the trails are 9000+/-, you can get above 12,000 or 13,000 if you want to bag a few peaks. GORP, Pecos Wilderness

Why does it "have" to be out west? No one likes the east side of the country?

How's about the Lemhi Range, ID?
Never heard of it? Exactly.

The Wasatch Range in Utah breaks 10K in several places and I really enjoyed the hikes there. I only had time for day hikes, but plan on returning next May for a 3 or 4 day hike.

I was just checking out some maps for the Emigrant Wilderness yesterday (immediately north of Yosemite NP). There are lots of options there. One that I looked at would be a point-to-point of about 45 miles with a bunch of elevation gain from miles 10-15 or so, then mostly "downhill" the rest of the way. I've done a fair amount of backpacking there, although most of it within about 10 miles from a trailhead.

The terrain is somewhat similar to what you see in the Snow people's photos of the southern Sierra, but maybe a bit more water. I like the lack of bushes, etc., so you can do lots of cross country stuff pretty easily.

Some of the trailheads are only about 3 hours from the SF Bay Area.

BTW, CMB, just watched "Hoosiers" the other night (again). Do backpackers in Indiana carry their basketballs with them on the trail?

I was kinda hoping to have something develop in the eastern part of the country but there is no reason I can't tag along on two trips. If people will be flying into Sacramento I can shuttle and put up (with) TT'ers. I don't have any bright ideas of good trips but I guess I could start thinking about it.

No we don't carry a ball with us and I just have a 1,000,000 ideas on where to plan this trip.
