TT Sierra Trip

“Snow Nymph, I got snowed on last weekend while climbing Whitney and again in Bodie. We camped at my usual spot at Deadman Creek and it appeared to be snowing at about 9000'. I'm ready, I've got my Kirkwood season pass and I'm ready to buy some fat powder skis this year.”

“Dunk, I saw you up there! Well, I saw the snow on Mt Whitney from Lone Pine. I was at Horton Lakes and my group bailed (5 out of 8 people).

Sheebz & Dave-O-Dave live in Mammoth part time, so they saw the snow before coming to meet us for the backpack. Can't tell you how excited we were Saturday night talking about Mammoth sitting around the campfire.

If you get to Mammoth, let me know. Its gonna be a great season! THINK SNOW!!!”

“Maybe I'll get to ski this year! I bought some skis two years ago and haven't used them yet!

“The road is good to the trailhead. The parking isn't right at the trailhead, but it isn't too far down the road.”

“Bishop area. I believe it is Sabrina Lake to Midnight Lake or vicinity Oct 26 and 27th, with some people starting on the 25th.

“Meeting at Sabrina Lake and backpacking 5 to 6 miles into Dingleberry Lake. From there dayhiking in the area. Some are going in on friday and some are going in on Saturday. All the permits are good till Monday but if anyone wants to go out early it is no problem. It is going to be a blast!”

“Mtn Mo - I don't know what would make it full. I think about 20 people have expressed an interest and some have already secured permits. I imagine that as the trip approaches the numbers will fluctuate.”

“Mtn Mo, you can get your own permit, or wait til next week to see if anyone cancelled. I've got the permit for Saturday's group.

I'm driving up Friday night to the trailhead, so how about meeting trailhead 8:30am Saturday? If that's too early, speak up!

Does everyone know how to get there? Anyone need directions?”

“I will be coming in with at least 2 other people on Friday with hopes of hiking a fair distance that day. Then we will hang out on Saturday to be all fresh and relaxed when the other TT'ers come huffing up the trail.”

“What time do you want to meet at the trailhead on friday?”

“We will be driving down from Sac-ish and I don't know how early we will hit the road. It takes 5-6 hours to drive there so I don't see hitting the trailhead before early afternoon. I may be living in a fantasy world about thinking we can even make it to a good campsite at a reasonable hour but that is my hope.”

“Pepper, there's no place to stop (camp) before Blue Lk. As I recall, no water on the trail until Bule Lk. either.”

“Since you're going in late, go to Blue Lake, then move camp on Saturday to Dingleberry Lake.”

“This would be the latest in the season that I've hiked, so wondering if crampons/snowshoes etc. would be required...

According to TOPO!, the hike in to Dingleberry from Sabrina is 4.56 miles +/-... Blue lake - in between - should be a piece of cake... or granite, as the case may be...”

Last weekend I was burning up with long pants on at 8,200' had to stop and zip off the legs.

I think Dingleberry is around 10k?”

“I will be at the trailhead Friday morning. I will hang around an acclimatize until everyone gets there.”

“So, where will people be parking who arrive late Friday night and where do they plan to spend the night? I will hiking out Saturday morning, but not sure when I am arriving.

“WW I thank Dingleberry is around 3 feet.”

“Phil, Parking is about 1/2 mile from the trailhead. There's a campground just past Parcher's Resort on the right side. Since I'll be in my truck, I'll park and sleep there.

Obi, here are some photos from last years trip

Last weekend we didn't hit snow till about 11,200', which was just below the glacier. I wore shorts/tank top most of the day. Sunday morning, when we tried to sleep, the tent got too hot. I don't think the weather will change too much. (most likely no crampons/snowshoes)”

“Phil, I'm thinking about heading out (from L.A.) about noon on Friday and coming back on Monday.
What are your plans? Can we adjust?”

“WLD, did you get the reservations for the permits?”

“What do people going in on Friday need to do about permits.”

“Nav - I am not sure what to do. My friends are leaving after work on Friday and have to return Sunday night. I can leave as early as I want on Friday. I should come back on Sunday, but don't absolutely have to. If I did stick with my friends, I am not sure if we would have a vehicle adequate to hold everything for three people.

When were you going to hike out?”

“I was thinking of coming out on Monday. I haven't told anyone at work yet, so it's still in the planning/thinking stage.

If I hike in on Sat., explore the lakes I haven't been to on Sun., and come out on Mon., I won't have to go back there again.”

“There's always more to explore even in the same area.”

I pulled them according to the list. It is as follows
Friday entry = 6
Saturday entry = 11

We I stop to pick it up in Lone Pine I can add to the friday total if necessary.”

“I'm afraid I'm out of the hike. I slipped on the ramp leading out of the truck and tore a groin muscle 8p. I used two sick days as the workmans comp doesn't kick in till after four days off. I'm on light duty for two weeks but now I've run out of time off to go hiking(not that I'd probably be up to it anyway). WLD if I owe you for permits let me know and I'll reimburse you. I'll be watching this space and hope the hike comes off o.k. for ya'all. Sorry if I inconvenienced any car poolers.”

“WindingO, yes, there is usally more to explore, but this will be the 4th time I've been up there.
A new trail sounds more exciteing than a 5th trip to the same place.”

“Always looking for new trails to explore! I've done almost all of the trails from the East side of the Sierras. This year I got a lot of first time trips in. Those were nice!

I'll be looking for new places for next season. Maybe add peaks and passes as side trips.”
