WLD, I'd like it if you went on the 7 dayer.

So let me get this straight?
The 5 day loop is the same hike as the 7 day, just hiked faster?

The loop is out of Mineral King, Bear paw meadows, five lakes basin, black rock pass, etc.?

I think you could count me in for some aspect of this trip. I'm just a little late in the game as I haven't been around very much lately. Honestly this is the first time I opened this thread. Please bring me up to speed :)

That 5 day sounds awesome except that it is over the 4th of July. My wife and I have a tradition of going to the coast to the place I proposed to her two years ago on the 4th. Don't think she would want to go on such a long backpack...7 days is too long for me right now...HMMMMM how to make this work :{}

thinair - here's a plan
thinair,
If you can't make the whole trip, you can always hike in a day or two with the group, then hike back out.

The 7 day trip starts on the 5th. You can do your trip on the 4th (assuming dayhike?), then head for Mineral King on the 5th.

Follow Navi's trip starting a day late on the 6th . I think their first day (5th)is only 3 miles, and 2nd (6th) day ~4-5 miles. If I remember right, your packs are light and you guys cover a lot of miles, so you should be able to catch up on the 6th. The 5 day group is doing the loop in reverse, so we'll be between Lost Canyon and Columbine on our 4th day/their 2nd day to meet for the night. You and your wife could hike out with the 5 day group, and you can have a little of both trips! Plus your anniversary trip!

SnowAngel, wouldya plz e me if you're the one pickin' up the permit for the 5-day group, it's gonna be on me. I cain't be more'n 75% sure that I can make it at the moment, the least I can do is pick up the tab and be there in spirit eh? And I assume since it's one price for a group permit you'd be getting it for the full 15 or 12 or whatever the max group size is, right?

Catch a ride?
Does anyone go near Fresno on the 5 day trip that I could catch a ride to the trail head and back after the trip?

Ld, you can rent bear cans at most outfitters, REI, Sports Chalet, etc. or at the Park Headquarters (close to the end of the road).

Hi Rockman (aka pantscandy... Just have to ask... Why the name change? ;-)... ) I am hooked on flyfishing! Haven't had as much water time as I would like. Still such a beginnnnnner... Took my rod last summer when backpacking in the Eagle Cap Wilderness up to Ice Lake and those fish didn't even care how inexperienced I was! They just got real impatient waiting for me to get my hook out of the bushes behind me! Hope you come along on this hike so I can have someone to fish with. (read.. someone to show me how..)

Hodgeman, let's work on this schedule idea. Would be nice to not have to drive the whole way by myself. I'll change my status to "fer sure" on the trip page! email me at anne2500@yahoo.com and let's synchronize. Have you talked ChinaChas into coming along? He doesn't believe I really own a backpack!! lol

NA, I will get the permit for 15 on March 1st. Might as well get it for the maximum amount as long as they charge a flat fee.

On the eastern side they charge $5 per person, so that's when the headcount is more important.

There's a movement afoot at work where I might have to go to Singapore around the trip's time frame.

If anything changes, I'll post about it.

Any room for two on the 5-day?
Hi, I posted on the trip page and its thread, but looks like this is where the action is......
I'm Karen from some other forums, sort of know some of you.......
My husband and I would love to join the 5-day trip. We can offer the loan of an extra bear cannister (Garcia kind) and a ride to Tango, since we would be driving from Sonoma County.

Wannabp, whur'bout you 2 from? I'm one county over in Fairfield. Perhaps a carpool thang would work.

Karen, sign up as "yes" on the trips page if there's a good chance you'll be going. If he doesn't have a log in name to reply as a yes, e-mail me so I save a space for him. I don't get on this board as much lately and have to play catch up every few days, but I always check this thread when I'm on.

So far I have 9 signed up. I'm not counting the maybe's until I see a "yes". So right now there's 6 openings (and 10 maybe's). 8 of 9 signed up have canisters. Bbinkley is signed up for both trips, so I don't know which one he's going on. The max is 15 for the permit, so if it goes over that, someone else would have to apply for one. I'm not sure what the quota is for the day on that trail.

WLD, this would be a good warmup for the JMT. This would be a test to see what kind of mileage/el gain & loss you & JDsmiling can do. Start on the 5 day and finish with the 7 day . . . it'll give you 9 days out.

Leaving for Mammoth. Be back late Sunday!!! Have a great weekend!

Trailhead Quotas
Take a looky at the NPS SEKI Website. I'm not sure which trailhead we are departing from within the Mineral King area but permit quotas are specified for each trailhead. Considering the hikes will start around the 4th of July we really should grab up those permits asap. Trailhead quotas are rangeing from 15-25/day and surely we'll not be the only one up there.

Thanks, SnowNymph, I changed to a "yes" and e-mailed you about Jerry coming.

We're a definite now, so there's an extra bear cannister someone can borrow and we can drive past Fairfield and Fresno, if anyone wants to car pool.

Off today to get back in shape. My grown-up daughter rides her horse and I try to keep up walking with rocks in my day pack. We plan 15 miles today. Uh oh, I forgot to mention I was a teeny bit crazy! Really, it's a great way to build up aerobic capacity.

It looks like I will not be able to start the hike with either group. I must work on Friday and Saturday. So I'm planning on leaving on Sunday Early and meeting up with everyone at the rendevue point and it's all up in the air from there.

I might be able to depart Saturday, if I can get a co-worker to cover for me.

So you guys figure out where exactly your meeting and I'll see you there!

Paul says: "burn? what burn? i don't remember any burn. gee, that steaming mug sure looks interesting, excuse me while i stick my fingers in it..."

yessss, the trip page answered all. now i just have to figure out how on earth i could do it. July 5th is the Mr.'s birthday, and he can't get the week off if we're doing the JMT. i must set my tiny mental wheels to spinning.

WLD is organizing a "beginner's backpack" at JT on 2/22-23. he posted it somewhere here, but i can't recall the name- "new backpackers trip" or something like that.
