On LlamaRama 2001 we had two teen agers: Miss Mozark and Turk...both 14. They did great.

Lunches: I like the tuna in foil a lot. I learned it from nav. Squeeze three or so packets of mayo into the pack, mix, and eat alone or with crackers, etc.

Other lunches: bagel with PB&J, crackers and cheese”

Interesting lunch menus. We're planning on cheese and crackers every day. Oatmeal with raisins and pecans and coffee (I make latte almost like Starbucks, ha!) for breakfast, grains or dehydrated beans and cheese and veggies and maybe tortillas for dinner. Bars for snacks, tea before bed. Hope it'll all squish down into one bear cannister.

Teens, Welcome!

Lunches:
- powdered hummus, add flaked sun dried tomatoes, add water and eat with crackers. Really lightweight lunch.
-tuna in foil pouch, add mayo packet, add relish packet, add minced onion and eat on tortilla
- pb on cheese its are good
- cheese stix and beef stix

Breakfast:
- folgers coffee bag, add equal, Starbucks mocha powder, vanilla pow creamer, reseal foil bag
- precooked bacon (sealed), let sit in hot water to heat up.
- vitamins, lots
- oatmeal, add dried bananas and strawberries

Dinner:
- Mountain House dinners, add spices, repackaged to save weight, less trash to carry out. You only have to bring one outer foil bag and you don't have to carry 5 moisture dessicant pack that comes with each dinner.
- hot chocolate
- Lipton cream of chicken soup

So are we meeting at 9am on Thursday? At the Mineral King/Timber Gap hiker parking lot? I thought I posted this twice before.

“Snow Nymph, about the pre cooked bacon, do you just cook it at home and toss it in a zip lock?”

“Hi Dunk!

The pre-cooked bacon is from Costco and doesn't have to be refrigerated. I think its called Ready-Made. You get 2 bags of 45 slices for ~$7.

I use a food sealer with 3 slices per breakfast, ~0.6 oz. I heat up the water, pour some for oatmeal, and put the sealed bacon in the pot for a minute or so. It heats up the bacon, and tastes great! I use the rest of the hot water for my coffee.”

“You can also buy pre-cooked bacon at Sam's Club or the grocery store. I think it's Hormell at Sam's and Oscar Mayer at the Grocery Store (the Oscar Mayer is the most expensive).”

“Well I had to ask a friend what the heck Hummus was and she said it is pretty good. I will try that. Where can I find the dried Hummus? We do not have a very good outfitters store here in Cincinnati.

“I've not seen dried hummus. We usually make our own and take it "un-dried." (Suppose one could dehydrate it.) Know it's not ultra-light weight, but a squeeze tube doesn't weigh that much.

“Sounds good to me -- that's everyone's menus I'm talking about-- and meeting (the 5-dayers) Thursday at 9 AM at the Mineral King/Timber Gap. That gives us plenty of time to marmot-proof our vehicles.

“I spoke with a MK ranger today who went over Sawtooth yesterday... Columbine Lake is still half frozen and there is quite a bit of snow on the north eastern side of Sawtooth...he used crampons.
He thought it would be doable in the afternoon without crampons. It's 102 degrees here today and hotter tomorrow.

New Marmot control... that's "working like a charm" according to the MK Rangers.

Buy a really large blue tarp lay it out flat, drive on to it, thread a rope or parachute cord through the grommets, pull tight...like a draw string and tie it off. One big gift wrapped car.:) You have to get the tarp big enough to completely cover the car. The marmots don't recognize the big blue package as a car/meal. The chicken wire has failed on numerous occasions....they push under it or climb over it.

I suppose it wouldn't hurt to throw some mothballs on the tarp before you close it.”

Rockman - My son and I stopped at Taco Bell last weekend on our way to the Cascades. He asked for extra packets of mayonaise and they filled up a sack with packets of mayo, mustard, ketchup, relish, taco sauce. Now.. I'm headed to KFC. I had forgot about their butter packets...

Hodge - I have an old blue tarp if you're interested in trying the latest Marmot repellent technique... Not sure what size it is.. Let me know if you want me to drag it out and measure it. I can throw it in (if we have enough extra room after loading all of Bigpoppa's stuff)”

I have to pick up my son at the airport in the evening on the 1st, so I won't get on the road until after I get him settled at home with his instructions for while I'm away - feed the cats, water the lawn, send out the search party if I don't come home. Not that he ever listens when I tell him where I'm going - I think I'd have to be missing for weeks before he noticed.

Anyway, I won't get on the road until sometime on the 2nd, so I'll probably won't be very far ahead of the 5-day group. I'm going to to arrange for a late pickup of my permit and go in on the afternoon on the 2nd. If I don't go in on the 2nd, I'll be waiting at the trailhead at 9 am on the 3rd.”

I'm up for that second cup of coffee for sure. I don't have crampons and I'm not planning on changing that any time soon.”
