I'll get my sons to login and say howdy before we go. One is at the movies and the other is at a going away party for a friend who is heading off to West Point.” 11:34:36 PM 6/25/03 shiprunner “hey whats up?! I am a male and live in porterville california. I am only 16 years old. still a little youngin but yeah i started back packing when i was 13 but have only gone a few times then quit because i had no one to go with because me dad had knee problems. So when wind walker started to talk to me about all of this i thought it was pretty cool. So i decided to get on here and start talkin and seein if i can do some packing.” 11:51:17 PM 6/25/03 “Tango & na...BUMMER! On LlamaRama 2001 we had two teen agers: Miss Mozark and Turk...both 14. They did great. Lunches: I like the tuna in foil a lot. I learned it from nav. Squeeze three or so packets of mayo into the pack, mix, and eat alone or with crackers, etc. Other lunches: bagel with PB&J, crackers and cheese” 11:53:57 PM 6/25/03 the-naviguesser “Hey whats up?! i dont think i waill be going on this trip because i do have summer school and every thing and i DO want to get my EDUCATION. so dont hate on me just because i am a kid:P LOL. not to be mean or any thing but i do probly think that i could out hike you any day of the week. LOL j/k (dont take it personaly)” 11:58:11 PM 6/25/03 “well guys good night.” 12:22:25 AM 6/26/03 “Phil, where do you get the mayo packets? I've seen them over the years but can't remember where. Each spring/summer I hit up the local KFC for about 100 butter packerts.” 12:24:27 AM 6/26/03 Back pac teen “Hey dude! No worries! Good to have u onboard! I'm not sure which guy you were that I met? Anyways, if your ever in my neck of the woods again, I'll give you a better tour of the operations up here! stay cool, hike lots! Skibum” 12:29:49 AM 6/26/03 “so exactly how many openings are there in these two trips?” 12:38:37 AM 6/26/03 “Pretty interesting tracking the various threads within threads. No one is too young or old, in my opinion. Welcome, teens! Interesting lunch menus. We're planning on cheese and crackers every day. Oatmeal with raisins and pecans and coffee (I make latte almost like Starbucks, ha!) for breakfast, grains or dehydrated beans and cheese and veggies and maybe tortillas for dinner. Bars for snacks, tea before bed. Hope it'll all squish down into one bear cannister. Sorry you can't come Naked Ape. How come you're moving to Italy? Sacramento party thread? Goin' check that out. Hikin' Mike, drink lots and lots of fluid, and then more. Maybe get an antibiotic to carry along just in case, if you're prone to something that needs antibiotics.” 12:53:24 AM 6/26/03 “Sorry to hear about Tango and Naked Ape! Teens, Welcome! Lunches: - powdered hummus, add flaked sun dried tomatoes, add water and eat with crackers. Really lightweight lunch. -tuna in foil pouch, add mayo packet, add relish packet, add minced onion and eat on tortilla - pb on cheese its are good - cheese stix and beef stix Breakfast: - folgers coffee bag, add equal, Starbucks mocha powder, vanilla pow creamer, reseal foil bag - precooked bacon (sealed), let sit in hot water to heat up. - vitamins, lots - oatmeal, add dried bananas and strawberries Dinner: - Mountain House dinners, add spices, repackaged to save weight, less trash to carry out. You only have to bring one outer foil bag and you don't have to carry 5 moisture dessicant pack that comes with each dinner. - hot chocolate - Lipton cream of chicken soup So are we meeting at 9am on Thursday? At the Mineral King/Timber Gap hiker parking lot? I thought I posted this twice before. WLD, I think we have 12 going right now. I'll try to find the list tomorrow night after work.” 4:03:54 AM 6/26/03 “Snow Nymph, about the pre cooked bacon, do you just cook it at home and toss it in a zip lock?” 4:45:21 AM 6/26/03 “Hi Dunk! The pre-cooked bacon is from Costco and doesn't have to be refrigerated. I think its called Ready-Made. You get 2 bags of 45 slices for ~$7. I use a food sealer with 3 slices per breakfast, ~0.6 oz. I heat up the water, pour some for oatmeal, and put the sealed bacon in the pot for a minute or so. It heats up the bacon, and tastes great! I use the rest of the hot water for my coffee.” 5:11:27 AM 6/26/03 “You can also buy pre-cooked bacon at Sam's Club or the grocery store. I think it's Hormell at Sam's and Oscar Mayer at the Grocery Store (the Oscar Mayer is the most expensive).” 8:09:19 AM 6/26/03 “Well I had to ask a friend what the heck Hummus was and she said it is pretty good. I will try that. Where can I find the dried Hummus? We do not have a very good outfitters store here in Cincinnati. Thanks for all the suggestions on food.” 8:11:52 AM 6/26/03 “I've not seen dried hummus. We usually make our own and take it "un-dried." (Suppose one could dehydrate it.) Know it's not ultra-light weight, but a squeeze tube doesn't weigh that much. If you would like a recipe, let me know.” 8:22:48 AM 6/26/03 “Big Poppa - you might check out the imported food section, or an import food store if you have one. Casbah is one brand that comes to mind, but I wouldn't even guess what's available where you are” 8:31:05 AM 6/26/03 “Sounds good to me -- that's everyone's menus I'm talking about-- and meeting (the 5-dayers) Thursday at 9 AM at the Mineral King/Timber Gap. That gives us plenty of time to marmot-proof our vehicles. I am soooooooo looking forward to ascending into the mountains and putting faces to names. This time next Thursday, we'll be congregating!” 10:15:28 AM 6/26/03 Rockman... “You can get the Mayo packs at any deli counter in your local grocery store.” 10:40:58 AM 6/26/03 For the 5-dayers.... “Trailhead in 168 hours!!!” 11:29:13 AM 6/26/03 “Thanks Mike!” 11:56:18 AM 6/26/03 “Hey all, it's been fun readin' about all the prep for this trip. Hope you all have a great time!! If you get the Park's newspaper while you're there (the one they give to everybody who enters), check out the insert with the photos from various decades of people at the Sequoia Nat'l Park sign. The one from the 40's is my dad, his mom, and his siblings. Keep your eyes peeled for those sneaky marmots!!” 12:04:55 PM 6/26/03 “ehats up every one how is every one today???!!!” 5:29:57 PM 6/26/03 ski bum “I am the one that was with Wind Walker when you met him.” 5:31:50 PM 6/26/03 “I spoke with a MK ranger today who went over Sawtooth yesterday... Columbine Lake is still half frozen and there is quite a bit of snow on the north eastern side of Sawtooth...he used crampons. He thought it would be doable in the afternoon without crampons. It's 102 degrees here today and hotter tomorrow. New Marmot control... that's "working like a charm" according to the MK Rangers. Buy a really large blue tarp lay it out flat, drive on to it, thread a rope or parachute cord through the grommets, pull tight...like a draw string and tie it off. One big gift wrapped car.:) You have to get the tarp big enough to completely cover the car. The marmots don't recognize the big blue package as a car/meal. The chicken wire has failed on numerous occasions....they push under it or climb over it. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to throw some mothballs on the tarp before you close it.” 5:34:36 PM 6/26/03 “Chicken wire stock just fell three points...LOL!” 6:05:14 PM 6/26/03 “Bigpoppa - You should be able to pick up dried hummus at the health food/natural stores. If you can't get any..... I can pick you up some (heck... why not just email me your grocery list?? )Note to self - Toss in propane portable BBQ... Rockman - My son and I stopped at Taco Bell last weekend on our way to the Cascades. He asked for extra packets of mayonaise and they filled up a sack with packets of mayo, mustard, ketchup, relish, taco sauce. Now.. I'm headed to KFC. I had forgot about their butter packets... Hodge - I have an old blue tarp if you're interested in trying the latest Marmot repellent technique... Not sure what size it is.. Let me know if you want me to drag it out and measure it. I can throw it in (if we have enough extra room after loading all of Bigpoppa's stuff)” 6:34:17 PM 6/26/03 “how big of a tarp will I need? Maybe extra hoses would be cheaper to buy.” 7:48:17 PM 6/26/03 “Do you think AAA will come up there to tow me or fix my truck after the Marmots get it?” 7:52:16 PM 6/26/03 “I dunno. The ranger said they had a 24x16 for their small truck. You might have to go a little larger since you have an extended cab and 4x4.” 8:35:24 PM 6/26/03 “WLD, I think I have 12 on the 7 day trip. Permit for 15. backpac teen, you think you can out pack me? I got a stick, and I know how to use it! I'll whoop you all the way up the trail you whippersnapper! Dang kids! No respect! Education? That's what night school is for. Tell Windwalker you're going on this trip.” 10:52:50 PM 6/26/03 “What can we do at night while sitting around the camp.....I was thinking about card games and stuff like that. I have some good games we can play” 11:01:08 PM 6/26/03 “Talk. Look at stars. Go to sleep.” 11:44:04 PM 6/26/03 “I'll know this weekend if it's a go. ”11:48:13 PM 6/26/03 “Should make for a great rain bucket too.” 11:49:39 PM 6/26/03 “Dang! I've got tonight, Mon and Tues to pack for Sierrapalooza! Since Tango won't be using the Bearikade, I have one extra for the 5 day trip. First one to contact me gets to use it. Right now I have one for Fritz and Ldhiker. WingDing, you can join our group instead of going in alone. 8-)” 11:53:50 PM 6/26/03 Naviguesser “But hey if u hit me all the way up the trail that would mean i would get there before you so and i would still win lol!!!!!! and plus i dont know why u have to make fun of the youth when old guys like you are still chasing it:P!!!!! but yeah i cant go on this trip cuz i got school and dude its summer school. there is no night school i am only 16. lol” 12:13:12 AM 6/27/03 “Teen, you'll be ahead of me right up until I trip you with my stick. You insolent hooligan! 8^D I'm not chasing youth, I don't want to be THERE again. Make sure Wind takes you on one of his trips. I look forward to meeting you. Keep studing. Knowledge is power and it's fun.” 12:40:52 AM 6/27/03 “Keep studing? He's only 16!” 12:44:44 AM 6/27/03 “I was hoping to play butt darts for night time festivites.” 12:44:59 AM 6/27/03 “LOL at Snow Nymph.” 12:46:33 AM 6/27/03 “Thanks for the offer to join the 5-day group Snow Nymph. I have to pick up my son at the airport in the evening on the 1st, so I won't get on the road until after I get him settled at home with his instructions for while I'm away - feed the cats, water the lawn, send out the search party if I don't come home. Not that he ever listens when I tell him where I'm going - I think I'd have to be missing for weeks before he noticed. Anyway, I won't get on the road until sometime on the 2nd, so I'll probably won't be very far ahead of the 5-day group. I'm going to to arrange for a late pickup of my permit and go in on the afternoon on the 2nd. If I don't go in on the 2nd, I'll be waiting at the trailhead at 9 am on the 3rd.” 1:46:00 AM 6/27/03 “wingding - If I can borrow your Golite Trek, I need to get it from you soon. Maybe I could make a quick trip out your way sometime this weekend. prrosenkrant@csupomona.edu” 1:55:47 AM 6/27/03 “wingding - Which airport are you going to on the 1st?” 1:57:10 AM 6/27/03 “looking at stars sounds awesome....where we live we don't see a lot of stars...just the really bright ones. Too bad we don't have a telescope but oh well. Just looking at them is good.” 8:03:12 AM 6/27/03 “I'm going in to Burbank - Ontario would have been closer, but I bought the cheap $99 each way tickets for my son's trip to NY to see his grandparents, so he was limited to Burbank.” 8:08:43 AM 6/27/03 “Phil - where do you live? I won't be home over the weekend - I'm headed to White Mountain. If you live near Ontario or on the way to Burbank I can drop it off next Monday or Tuesday evening.” 8:11:39 AM 6/27/03 “Shiprunner08, Bring the telescope. Ladyhiker will carry it for you. She is real nice about that kind of stuff. Rockman. I am not sure I know what buttdarts is, but if it has to do with my butt and poking, I will pass on it. I will just bring a deck of cards and I know just the person who will carry them for me. (note to self....)” 8:13:28 AM 6/27/03 “sorry i don't have a telescope....we have binoculars which are pretty good” 8:22:09 AM 6/27/03 “WW, thanks for the updates. The gift-wrapped car marmot control sounds perfect, although I wonder if there are tarps the size of my car. Sort of good news about the northeast of Sawtooth conditions. Sounds like we'll be obligated to get a late start on our last morning, second cups of coffee all around. Or carry crampons? Or assume this heat wave will melt away enough snow/ice?” 10:52:52 AM 6/27/03 “The thought of a dozen large blue "burritos" in the parking lot is kind of comical! Hmmm, which one of these is my car... I'm up for that second cup of coffee for sure. I don't have crampons and I'm not planning on changing that any time soon.” 11:20:39 AM 6/27/03 Jump to Page << prev
