If you're riding with Pepper you better get some more time off! Cause I'm pretty sure she's all for the 7 day version. :)

Solitary: I'm going on the 5 day trip that starts on July 3rd and I work in Ontario very close to the airport, so if you're interested in being picked up at Ontario on July 2nd on my way to Mineral King you're welcome aboard.

Thanks Phil and Wingding0
I think the overiding factor here will be getting a ticket around July 4th if I try to use my Frequent Flyer miles. If push comes to shove I'll just buy one.
Now I've gotta go back and study all the old posts. I don't even know exactly where this trip is headed.

Hey CMB - I'm not sure what the drive time to the trailhead is, from Pepper's neighbourhood, but I think the plan is to get to the trailhead for the night, on the 4th. Will you be able to get a fairly early flight

Thanks all, I have no fear about the ride to the TH, it will all work out in the end.

Bbink-Thanks, I've never flown SW. I'll look into it.

Wind Walker- I am very open with the dates so whatever is the most convenient for everyone is cool with me. Loved your Yosemite album. The view from your campsite was great.

What is the diff between the 7 and 5 day? More mileage or more leisurely pace?
tango

12/23/02

tango - The distance is essentially the same, but the pace will be less on the 7 day trip. We leave two days apart in opposite directions on a loop hike so we can meet for one night along the way.

Also, some people don't have as much vacation so they are maximizing the July 4 weekend. That is why the 5 day trip was created.

I would really love it if we could all hike together. However, this is probably the best possible way to include everyone that expressed interest.

IMHO, if you are not a strong hiker, the 5-day trip could kick your butt all over the Sierras.

A Preview

Here are another set of maps of the area. These maps have links on them to photos.

Segment 2

Segment 3

These are just two
among several maps of the outing. These sections might take a few minutes to load if you're on a dial-up connection, but they're worth the download. On each of these maps there are dozens of butterflies. Click on a butterfly and you get a photo of the route. The butterfly looks like this, only smaller.

There may be a few quirks with the pages here and there since it was put together quickly.

Enjoy.

Thanks Tekapo. That was quite a nice job making all those pages and stuff. This trip is going to be awesome...just awesome.

I was talking to another professor at school about this trip who is an avid backpacker and hikes the Sierras a lot. She said this hike was her favorite one in the Sierras and Precipice was her favorite spot.

Windwalker, are you planning on going on the 5 day loop?
Yes, I'm sure it can be done, but I'm glad you're not dragging me along with you.
Have you done this loop(5 or 7 day)before?

Nope I haven't
Probably Navi...It's much easier for me to arrange the 5 days off.

But I don't really have to decide until we pull the permits...do I ?
I was looking at the options because Wingding and the Snows want to leave on the 3rd.

But if I don't lay off all this Holiday eating you guys might have to roll me up Sawtooth and do a nine day version ;)

Have you signed up on the trips page yet? I created the trip on the trips page while I was helping Matt test the new page.

I just signed up on the "Trips Page". I only come to "Trail Talk" and rearly visit the other pages. Thanks for the heads up.

So, if you haven't done the loop, how did you get all those cool photos?
I remember when that footbridge was higher up the canyon.

I would like to share your company on the 7 day trip, but I ain't rolling anybody or anything up Sawtooth. After Dingleberry Lk. guess how long it takes me to get up Sawtooth all on my own.

Reality check
I question the mileages given by topo programs. The two programs I use (Delorme and Garmin Mapsource) underestimate mountain trail distances by about 25%- 35%.

Snow Nymph and wingding0 are very strong hikers (as are WLD and others). The 5-day trip will be just fine for them and their schedule needs. For those of us who average 1.0 - 1.5 mph with full pack, the 7 day trip is the better option. I can do 2.5 mph with full pack on level ground or slight downhill. However, this loop hike is all uphill.
Phil

I use the TOPO! program. I've found the mileages to be accurate, as compared to what it feels like on the ground.
TOPO! uses USGS topo maps. Yes I've found errors on the topos but they are the best we have.

I've played with DeLorme and it downright SUCKS.

Phil, don't worry. You did the Lost Llama Limbo, this is only a little worse than that. 8^)

WW, why do I feel I've been Shanghied?

WLD, On the 7 day trip you get to spend more time with me. 8^)
No hurry on which trip you want, just keep posting and talking about it.
As I recall, permits for National Parks are $5 for the whole party, plus entrance fee, $20 for each car.

H of BC, THAT bottle always goes baclpacking! Maybe two for this trip. ;^)
The-Naviguesser

I don't think there is a fee on the MK road...unless things have changed.

The turn off for MK is several miles outside the southern entrance station of Sequoia.
Wind Walker
10:56:31 PM

There is a gate about a 1/4 of the way in, and they do collect a fee.

Trust me on this, I know what I'm talking about. 8^)

They pay to get to MK, not to drive that road. 8^)

The road into Sequoia is only $10.00....$20.00 for a whole year.

I'm presuming my annual pass to Sequoia will work on the MK road too. At least I hope so.
