Lots of small towns on the Mississippi River ("river rats" is TRUE! In Lansing, Iowa they kill men in bars with a baseball bat!! In Guttenberg, Iowa they just plain shoot them!!) However, they're nice, touristy towns, apparently if you're not a local, or not butting heads with one. ;-)”

“As far as Roanoke goes - I actually spent the better part of my formative years there (5-11) and I love my memories of the city. I haven't visited in over 10 years though. We lived in the mountains for a while (hippy parents) and then moved into town but were actually closer to Salem then down town Roanoke.”

“i second that emotion! i lived in the vicinity of Roanoke until i went to college. eewww! actually, we lived in the mountains and in the country, and it was really pretty there. but Roanoke itself consists of like two blocks of scuzzy, boring "downtown" and lots of hideous, boring sprawl.

i think my parents were trying to beat their original "nasty town" choice, though, because when i went to college, they moved to the outskirts of Charleston, WV. now THAT is nasty. the pollution there is sometimes so thick, you practically can't see your hand in front of your face. UG-LY!”

“After giving this a couple of seconds thought, I think the list would have to include Los Angeles. Sprawl from hell and the most miles of freeway in the US and all of it clogged to capacity. One of the things that makes it even more oppressive is that many of the locals think they live in paradise and that we are all just waiting for an opportunity to move there.”
