“I remember this one time, I was staying up at Tri Corner Shelter. Boy howdy was it ever cold. Im not sure just how cold it got but my sweet little wife told me that down at Sevierville, it got down to 25 below that night.

I reckon that given the attitude difference and such, it was around 35 below at Tri Corner. There was snow on the ground, but it was hard as rock and you couldnt touch anything that was metal with your bare hands or it would stick. Folks, when the breeze did blow I thought the trees would crack open cause I swear you could hear them groan in agony.

Every time that I took in a breath, I could feel it freezing on the way in. I felt kind of foolish but I had to wrap a scarf around my face to keep from icing up my nostrils and lips. LOL...I dont know why I felt foolish...nobody else was there!....lol.

I had to sleep with my water bottle so it would remain liquid. I bout froze to death that night all curled up in my fingerhut brand sleeping bag. Water bottle clutched tight and a few choclate bars for extra fuel. My poor overhauls felt like they had a heavy coat of starch in them. The gallus buckles were playing a tune as I shivered violently in that cold, lonely, desolate place miles from everwhere.

Yep, according to the weather man, this was the coldest place in the whole country that night. It was even colder than Alaska. I cant remember the date exactly but it was around the early to mid eighties.

We dont get weather like that much around here but we could use some. I think it would kill off a lot of those bugs like them spruce fir bugs and such not to mention them africanized merskeeters.

It was so cold, that a friend of mine who lived over past Dollyworld had a power pole snap right off in front of his house. Another friend who lived over in an old timey house on King Branch, set a glass of Scotch on his nightstand. When he went to take a drink of it the next morning......it was froze solid! Now he was out of electric and the crazy thing let his wood stove burn out, so you can see why it got so cold in that old house.

Now that was some cold weather my friends. It was tar bustin cold. We are long overdue for some really cold weather, but I have seen it work in cycles like this before in the mountains. Maybe it will be this year, maybe next, but rest assured, one of these days a wind will come down out of Yankeedom and the cold will settle in for a while.”
