I wonder if weeks of bitterly cold mornings - when the car protests when you start it, and the drive to work is on square tires - I wonder if that'll squelch Artex's desire to sleep in a tent in below zero temps.

I know it does mine, haha!

Why isn't Artex signed up for FYAO V (I just checked).

Yeah! Bring it! I missed the boarding last winter! MY buddy Jules is coming from the UK and I promised him snowshoing and igloo building...

Ember: I find the doggie booties to be good if it is really icy but not so good for powder. The snow seems to get down inside them and they end up getting pulled off. OUr dog always goes naked in the snow without any problems. She does have a blanket/jacket thing she wears for extra insulation. Like this!

if that doesn't work, try

Here's the National Weather Service's forecast for my area tonight:

Partly cloudy in the evening. Then clearing. Scattered frost with patchy fog after midnight. Lows in the 30s. Northwest winds diminishing to less than 10 mph.

Sweeeeeeeeeeet!

Fall has arrived and winter is not far away.

Artex, in a few months, you'll be wishing for a nighttime low to be above zero for a 'warm' night.

I haven't been able to check the weather up on Mt. Mitchell lately due to damage to the system from Ivan, but the other day it was 36 degrees up there with a windchill in the 20s (i believe on thursday).

Yesterday morning in Shenandoah it was 41 degrees and very breezy when I began hiking. Fall is here!

Bring on the cold!
My allergies have been kicking my butt and I can't wait for the first frost. The allergies are worse than they have been over the past few years and I credit it to my neighbour who cut down the orchard across my road.

He wants to plant dwarf apple trees and apparently you have to grow corn for a couple of seasons before you can replant. Ragweed grows in the corn and everything that kills ragweed kills the corn. Right now the pollen is coming off the ragweed and I need the frost to kill it.

I'm driving up to northern Ontario to see my daughter who will have a film entered in a film festival. They've had a few frosts and that will help.

yeah, there is a weather station and cam on the summit of Mitchell. I like to check both Washington and Mitchell to see how different they are weatherwise. Alot of times Mitchell is colder and windier than Washington. Most of the time Washington takes the cake. No place has weather like Washington. Mitchell's weather is pretty harsh too.

Mt. Mitchell Homepage. Looks like it warmed up a tad since I checked it last. It's now showing 52 degrees.

Very cool, thanks E&S. I bookmarked their weather page. It'll be fun to compare the two.

Mt. Washington hasn't had snow yet this year. I read that, on average, they should have 2.5" by now. I bet they'll get it this weekend.

Hi, Sweetheart,

I'll be driving up with Gilles' trailer on Friday, October 8. I'll drive you back, too.

Guess what? I was listening to a book reading on CBC Radio about an East Indian community in Fiji and a woman was called 'Pud' by her sister. She said her sister has always called her 'Pud' which is short for 'Pudding'. Whoda guessed.

I'm glad your friend has a bale-out/support system.

Water is probably the easiest - he can get it from inside a building - I assume he'll be taking his showers in the Residence building.

He'll need tarps on top and on the sides. He will also need to ventilate when using his stove - I assume it's a liquid gas one. Canister stoves won't work in the cold. A fire would be out of the question.

He will need a good mattress - two (or more) layers of blue foam might do. If he's not loading a pack, two El Cheapo sleeping bags, one inside the other might do. He will need to be warmly dressed to sleep in them - I suggest fleece. There are El Cheapo fleece sweat pants and sweaters available from Sear's - cotton won't do.

He'll need a vapour barrier liner for the colder weather. An emergency bivy sack can be had for about 30 $. This stops the vapour from his body from compromising the insulation of his sleeping system.

He must go inside - even if it's to a hospital or police station if any part of his body begins to change colour - you will notice that there aren't a lot of homeless people in Sudbury in the winter.

Another possibility is something I saw on TV. A student spent his years at university sleeping at the bottom of a stair well in a residence building (several years before). He wrote about it and CBC decided to do an inny-minny documentary on it.

Guess what? when they went there to film it, someone else was living there.

Documentary? There ya go.

Love,

Dad

Suzanne Murdoch wrote:
Hi daddy,

I have to ask you for some advice for my friend Sal. He just got back from backpacking around Europe and realized he had no place to live.
He had his tent and some very limited summer gear, so he set up camp on the University campus. He's been living there all summer. He's only a 5 minute walk from the residence, and a 10 minute walk from the university. He's well hidden in the bush and it's very passable terrain to get there.
Right now he has two tents, two waterproof bags for food and clothes,
One MSR cooking stove and hammock.
He's building a shelter right now that is against a huge outcropping (the back wall) and there are four tree's in the perfect position for a rectangular shelter with one of the walls being the rock. He has lots of logs and sticks weaved to make walls, and the structure has trees along it too that hold it all in. It's very strong (he can hang from the roof).
My questions are:
What does he need to stay warm in there all winter. He's going to be tarping the whole structure after building it up more with big sticks. I suggested blankets and tarps over top.
Can he bring his one man tent in there. It's a big structure (9ft by 8ft approx) but there is a huge slant, can he build that up and should he put down a tarp and maybe cardboard boxes for more insulation. If he were to have a tiny fire in there against the rock wall (without anything on the ground there of course) how big would the opening in the roof have to be? How far away would his stuff have to be from the fire? And Is it safe enough to do?
what other equipment does he need?
How can he keep water easily accessible (melting with his stove)?
Is this whole thing possible at all?
His parents have offered to pay his rent for a place (they are an upper class Italian family in TO) but he is not able to do that, and he's the perfect candidate for a guy living on campus in the winter. He's tough and stubborn so instead of talking him out of it, I told him I'd ask you what you thought so he could do it right. But he does have other options (friends on and off campus) if he needs to leave.
What do you think, or, do you know of a web site or book that I could suggest that can prepare him more?
Thanks dad, can't wait to see you. Let me know how you are doing,
Love Suzanne xox
