Flags on the 48! A September 11th Memorial Hike
On September 11th, 2001 the consciousness of United States of America was inexorably altered by an unprovoked and unjustifiable act of terrorism so far reaching in its scope, that our country will not soon heal from this wound. Thousands of innocent lives were lost in a fleeting moment as families still try to piece together their shattered lives and return to some semblance of normalcy.

We in the hiking community would like to honor those fallen heroes by flying the American flag atop of all 48 four thousand foot and higher mountains in New Hampshire on Saturday, September 14, 2002, in conjunction with the observance of National Remembrance Day. By demonstrating our steadfast unity as Americans and as hikers, we hope to express our unwavering support to the families and to the communities whose losses are beyond comprehension and whose sacrifices will forever remain in our hearts.

As of today, there are only nine peaks that still need to be supported. If you're a northeast hiker and are interested in participated, please check out the links above. Thanks!

...take the flags down with you when you leave.

I know in the Q&A you state the LNT policy, but in case someone doesn't read that I thought I'd post it here. I know some acted offended when I mentioned it on AlpineZone and said "trust us," but I was on Katahdin last year just after the attacks and hikers were leaving the flags on the mountain. The rangers had to hike up every day and carry them all down. One had a 15ft flagpole.
thanks.

twigeater - I don't think anyone was offended by your post on AZ. Regardless, you make a very good point and will reiterate LNT in the Flags forum. Thanks! :)

I'm glad to see a new thread on this. I signed up for a peak a couple days ago. If anyone wants to join me, please let me know.

It's great to see that Pathman and others are taking the idea elsewhere.

I was out at Shining Rock last September - didn't hear the news until almost two days later. Plan to be out there again this year. I'll take a flag up to top of Cold Mountain. Planning a three or four day loop around Shining Rock from the 8th to 12th, if anyone wants to join me. Should be blurberries galore again this year.

I'm going again.
For people interested in dayhiking in New Hampshire, there is a 9/11 memorial project to fly flags on each of the 48 NH peaks over 4k feet.

Last year people signed up to carry flags to all of the 4k peaks in New Hampshire, and many of us met up at the Woodstock Inn later on - it was a great thing.

You can join a peak already registered, sign up for a peak of your own, or just remember those lost.

I'm going, although I'm not sure what peak. I missed day one of the sign-up and the peaks I wanted are gone - although I might join someone else on a peak.

Are you signed up Pepsi? I see Artex picked Bond.

Yes, I signed up for Lafayette first thing yesterday and it'd be great if you decided to join in there :)

Anyone else that is interested in coming along is more than welcome too.

I would have done Bondcliff again but because it's on Sunday this year and I do need to be back in CT Monday morning so I thought something closer the the trailhead (and less railbed) might be better for me this year:)

I'm going to try to get up there that weekend, but I'm not exactly sure what's going on just yet...

I'll be keeping an eye out for this.

Phantom (and Pepsi): I've got the w/e off, so I'm up for doing this as a two day hike - or camping and day hiking both days.

I recommend it to anyone who is up for hiking in the WMNF. It's a great non-Partisan patriotic event and a good way to remember those who died or were injured at the WTC and the Pentagon on 9/11/01. (a lot of the survivors were burned, so I feel some extra solidarity there, even though I carried a flag for the event in 2002).

I think I'm going to stay at Broken Branch CG on Saturday night. It's where the planning meeting, which I missed this year :(, was held.
And, it looks like that is where the pre-hike gathering wil be on Saturday night. Because it's on Sunday this year and a lot of the hikers will have to head out right after their hike I don't think there is going to be an after get together this year. At least not like the last two.

I'd be in for a Saturday hike as well.

Several TT'ers including Pepsi in the Bonds and Skeetah, Monkey Boy and myself on Carrigain participated in the Flags event. Monkey Boy posted a trip report on a Carrigain thread - but I wanted a Flags thread flying with Flag pics on 9/11 (pics are from MB's camera):
