Urban Hiking...To Bag The Tallest Buildi ngsView MessagesViewing posts 1 to 40 of 40 messages posted.
Like The Song...Cliiiiiiiiiiiiiiimb Every Building “I made a comment on another thread about "Urban Hiking" which got me thinking. I once went to the top of the tallest building in Pitt, PA to look out the top floor window. Maybe there's a sport/activity in that concept...to bag the tallest building(s) in every major city in the U.S. Or even greater...THE WORLD. Naaaaaaaaaaaaa!” 3:36:55 PM 8/28/02 “LOL! I'll stick with mountains, thank you very much.” 3:37:51 PM 8/28/02 “I think it sounds like fun.. Some amazing views can be afforded from very tall buildings. I'm on the worldwide quest...I've been on top of the Empire State Bldg and the Eiffel Tower. Both were impressive.” 3:55:01 PM 8/28/02 “Not for me. I want to be outside. I have, however, thought about urban hiking when work won't allow me to leave town. I'd rather hike old neighborhoods etc. than be inside a building.” 3:58:30 PM 8/28/02 i've been doing some urban night hiking “i guess you would probably just call it walking, it is mostly on sidewalk, but i hit a few really good hills along the way. there's a 5 mile loop and a 9 miler i've been doing from time to time at night before bed. my 5 miler times down to a little under an hour and a half if im walking fast. can't say for the 9, it goes past a couple bars and i've been known to take a quick "water" break” 4:08:59 PM 8/28/02 “I've been on the observation deck at the Sears Tower, at night. You can actually see the curve of Lake Michigan because of the lights of the cities that border on it.” 4:10:22 PM 8/28/02 “Ya the sears tower is kind of neat! 8D” 4:16:04 PM 8/28/02 “Actually, there are a group of people who call themselves "urban explorers". They go into places most people try to stay away from, like abandoned subway tunnels and condemned buildings. Here's a link.” 4:34:59 PM 8/28/02 “Doesn't Donald Trump have that goal, to bag the tallest bldgs in the world.” 4:41:32 PM 8/28/02 New York “Im heading to the big city for 4 days to trott around every block, I want to see china town, the bronx, harlem etc. just to see how the lives of others are lived. Going the weekend of Sep. 20” 4:43:08 PM 8/28/02 “I think I'll pass on that, Phaedrus. Sounds too much like the "voids" they warned me about in the Navy.” 4:47:16 PM 8/28/02 “Prowler, are you like independently wealthy or what? You're younger than me, w/ 1 more child than me, and yet you seem to travel all over the freakin' country. What is the deal?” 4:57:21 PM 8/28/02 “If I remember correctly, Prowler is a hard working small business owner.” 5:02:55 PM 8/28/02 “Lifes been good! So far!” 5:04:44 PM 8/28/02 “If I remember correctly there is an annual race up the Empire State Building.” 5:05:26 PM 8/28/02 “Well, all I can say is good job Prowler! You should think about using some of that money to take the fam. to Europe. If you pay my way, I'll be your tour guide. We can hang out w/ my friends and you can really see how other people live. (Did I sell you on that one? LOL!)” 5:09:37 PM 8/28/02 “Im thinking about Costa Rica for a week then the Bahammas the week after next summer!” 5:12:08 PM 8/28/02 “Prowler, remind me when it comes closer to when you'll be in NYC. If we can work out meeting up, I'll buy you a beer.” 5:15:22 PM 8/28/02 “Europe . . .I said Europe Prowler. Geez, if you want me to be your tour guide we have to go to Europe. So, what do you say?” 5:16:25 PM 8/28/02 “Artex, I’m in NYC right now. Buy me a beer!” 5:19:58 PM 8/28/02 NG “maybe if you suggested the Riviera he might be interested. Sounds like he has sun and beach on his mind. You might have to sell the idea to Kym as well. ;-) au pair?” 5:22:28 PM 8/28/02 “Oh yeah! Thanks for the tip Pathman. I actually was an au-pair in Holland. I'm a mom now, of a child in the same age range as your own, so I can totally tailor my skills to your needs. Kym? Kyyyym? What do you say? LOL! Anything for a free trip!” 5:24:57 PM 8/28/02 “you never know , she may go for it! But I need to stay far awat from Afghanastan. Artex, I forgot you where from around there!! Ill definetly hook up with you! I'm trying to talk Stikmon in the Rica trip, to go yakin and bping!” 5:31:08 PM 8/28/02 “LOL @ Must Hike! What the heck are you doing in the city? Work stuff, I take it. Prowler.. correction.. I'm not from around NYC. I merely live around NYC. I'm from northern Florida, biiiiiiiiig difference. :-)” 5:34:36 PM 8/28/02 “do what??? well your living near NY I take it! Well we can buy rounds then!!!” 5:35:55 PM 8/28/02 “Prowler, we will be very, very far away from Afghanistan. I'm really just kidding anyway . . . well sorta' . . . exactly how much extra travel dough do you have? LOL!” 5:36:01 PM 8/28/02 “You got it Prowler.. Got to get you to McSorley's pub.. I have a feeling you'd love it. Great place!” 5:40:06 PM 8/28/02 “That’s right work stuff, but time to head home now. Lets see it’s 6:50 I’ll probably still hit traffic trying to get out of here.” 5:46:06 PM 8/28/02 “LMAO, Must Hike, I was waiting for a bunch of "Hey! Me too!" posts after yours.” 6:09:58 PM 8/28/02 “There's an annual fund raiser that hikes the stairs of the Hancock building in Chicago.” 6:52:45 PM 8/28/02 “Phaedrus - that urban explorer website was pretty interesting. My sister hooked up with a group that does that type of exploring in Oakland. They went into they storm drain system the trip she was along.” 10:40:15 PM 8/28/02 “she find any mutants??” 5:49:10 AM 8/29/02 “CHUD” 6:21:23 AM 8/29/02 “Hey, guys! One place I've always liked is the Perry's Victory International Peace Memorial on Put in Bay in Lake Erie. It's like 350 feet up to a completely open observation deck. Lake Erie spreads out in all directions and you can see islands and Canada. And when it's windy, you get blown all around at the top. Way cool.” 11:41:55 AM 8/29/02 “Hancock building has a screened porch as a part of it's observation deck so you can hear the "sound" of the city and breathe (cough) Chicago's fine air at 95 stories above the street.” 11:46:24 AM 8/29/02 “Yeah, Pepperdog, a few people did that a while back and got into the bay bridge maintenance areas... took pictures and such.” 12:18:25 PM 8/29/02 “What's this? Artex is buying beers for everyone in NYC? Count me in. Let's meet at the Seaport(Jeremy's Ale House).” 1:43:30 PM 8/29/02 “There are no tall buildings where I work. HOwever, I'm considering loading my pack and throwing on my boots during my lunch hour and treking a few miles in a semi urban area. I say semi-urban cause after about 1/2 mile the trek will be rural country road. I'm curious to know if anyone else out there gets any training in this way? I imagine the stares from folk passing will be numerous.” 8:38:51 PM 1/25/06 “I do it. But unfortunatly its all flat around here. and yes, the old people stare, glaring out thier windows from behind their curtains at me, let the dogs out jsut as I near, and moms with kids hurry them into the house....” 8:42:29 PM 1/25/06 “There won't be any elevation change in my lunch break trekin either. Seems to me though with the pack weight it would condition better than just walking with no pack weight. Does that make sense or am I going coo coo?” 8:50:28 PM 1/25/06
