Urban Hiking...To Bag The Tallest Buildi ngs

“I made a comment on another thread about "Urban Hiking" which got me thinking. I once went to the top of the tallest building in Pitt, PA to look out the top floor window. Maybe there's a sport/activity in that concept...to bag the tallest building(s) in every major city in the U.S.
Or even greater...THE WORLD.

“i guess you would probably just call it walking, it is mostly on sidewalk, but i hit a few really good hills along the way.
there's a 5 mile loop and a 9 miler i've been doing from time to time at night before bed. my 5 miler times down to a little under an hour and a half if im walking fast. can't say for the 9, it goes past a couple bars and i've been known to take a quick "water" break”

One place I've always liked is the Perry's Victory International Peace Memorial on Put in Bay in Lake Erie. It's like 350 feet up to a completely open observation deck. Lake Erie spreads out in all directions and you can see islands and Canada. And when it's windy, you get blown all around at the top. Way cool.”

“Hancock building has a screened porch as a part of it's observation deck so you can hear the "sound" of the city and breathe (cough) Chicago's fine air at 95 stories above the street.”

“There are no tall buildings where I work. HOwever, I'm considering loading my pack and throwing on my boots during my lunch hour and treking a few miles in a semi urban area. I say semi-urban cause after about 1/2 mile the trek will be rural country road. I'm curious to know if anyone else out there gets any training in this way? I imagine the stares from folk passing will be numerous.”

“I do it. But unfortunatly its all flat around here. and yes, the old people stare, glaring out thier windows from behind their curtains at me, let the dogs out jsut as I near, and moms with kids hurry them into the house....”

“There won't be any elevation change in my lunch break trekin either. Seems to me though with the pack weight it would condition better than just walking with no pack weight. Does that make sense or am I going coo coo?”
