Been lurking for a while and decided it was time to jump back in here.

It seems that more and more of us are gaining weight here in America! More fast food, less workouts, wussie ass attitudes about excercize, and backpacks with wheels. Whats up! It seems that now everywhere I look there is some big butt in my way.

Seriously, this is becoming a BIG problem! Of course if I was incharge of getting people fit, I'd send them hiking for a good two weeks to a month. Now that's weight loss!

What do you think the solution to the problem is. How do we change the current trend of Fatness here in America? Or do we have to wait for the whole survival of the fittest scenario to kick in?

or are the fat getting beautiful?
actually, i hit my limit this year. since 1987 i have been around 225 pounds not matter what i ate, how much alcohol i consumed or how little i exercised. i was comfortable around this weight. over the last year, i have on numerous occasions, stepped on the scale and found i was at 230 +- lbs. i got back from a vacation to the beach on the second week of july and wieghed in at 236 lbs!!! that was my limit. i have been following the weight watchers plan and have actually started to exercise. i am currently at 214 lbs. with a goal of 202.5 +- 2.5 lbs.

my take on it, it is very easy in our society to survive with minimal physical effort.

my wife has exercised and eaten properly for years and her reward looked like it would be she could grow old alone. now i am trying to foil all of those hard laid plans.

LOl, Baume. Good for Running Girl, and for you for trying to catch up to her. Exercise seems to be the key since I know many people besides myself that eat healthy and small portions, but don't lose weight. Some of us don't have great metabolisms. For me, part of the key is to spend more time with people who don't crave desserts all the time.

America is just lazy, and eats more calories than they burn off. Too much fast food. One third of America is technically obese. If you think healthcare costs are bad now, they're only going to get worse because people aren't exercising and eating right. It's really a disgusting situation.

We eat much more processed food than fresh food. There is one cause. I also agree that most folks could afford to do more exercising.

I think the main problem is two fold. The standard American diet and inactivity. The standard American diet laced with high amounts of animal products, fat and processed foods. Add that to the fact that the majority of the population doesn't stick to an exercise program and the result is exactly what you decribed. It gets worse when you consider the health problems that it creates. It's not only adults, but kids are overweight and inactive too. Other than to educate people I don't know what else you can do.

Most of my family is overweight. They are still pretty active, however the younger members of my extended family are not only overweight, they have a real attitude about it. They act like it's some kind of incurable disease. Just keep pushing those buttons, kids, I'm sure the video games will get you in shape, real soon.

Weight watchers definiatley works. I am 5'10" with a slender build. I weighed almost 180, which doesn't sound like much but it it too much for my frame. My wife has had a hard time dropping the weight after our second child was born. She started going to weight watchers and I just eat what she cooks without cheating. She now walks and works out 3-4 times a week. I run and do pushups 3-4 times a week. I have lost 20 and she has lost 15. I want to lose about 5 more and she wants to lose about 10 more. I couldn't believe the difference on my Roan hike last weekend.

Fat people lack the moral strength for excercise. Obviously, no one wants to be fat, but some people are just weak that way. Shame.

We should nationalize a healthcare and fitness program.

i go to the gym almost every night and have done a good job avoiding snacks, fast food, soda. actually, i haven't had a soda in about 5 years. i guess i still want to be very active when i'm 70, to do so, i need to take care of myself now.

i think people require, and expect, too much convenience.

phat ass story
since we're on the subject of asses (sort of). my friend Christopher just called me and told me the best story i've heard in weeks! he's taking these classes to learn how to be a professional masseur, and they've been learning how to massage individual parts of the body for the past few weeks. well, last night was--you guessed it--booty massage fiesta! he was telling me about how extremely weird it was to have some stranger massaging his butt, and having to massage theirs, and the teacher was walking around like it was totally normal to watch everyone doing this. now, while he's telling me all this, i'm imagining that everyone has on underwear at least. but no. LMAO!!! he said they were using drapes, but that that did practically no good, and everyone's butts were just hanging out in the breeze! i think i would've been "sick" that day.

LOL @ Lyra! Yikes! Hopefully no one got too relaxed after that bean burrito :) But you point was, he saw some large butts?

It's hard in today's scoiety to eat healthy. Everything is so rushed, there's hardly time for exercise AND a healthy meal. You really do have to MAKE time for these things, as unappealing as it may sound.

I agree Roseymonster.. people always say they never have the time. Well, make the time! For me personally, the quality of my life and health isn't something I want to mess around with. I enjoy being able to hike up mountains with vigor and also go on long runs and not think twice about it. On somewhat of a sidenote, the two activities really compliment eachother very nicely.

Actually, I never got around to it but I have a friend in the construciton business. They recently built a new building for the local power distributor and he oversaw the project. They had him engineer WIDER doorways because so many of the employees are obese. I couldn't believe until I talked to some people who work there and got to see first hand what he meant. That's just lame. I also noticed I seem to see a lot of fat people driving SUVs. I guess they can't get in and out of a mid-size car comfortably for they go for the large-marge version. Also pretty lame.

There's a passenger on one on the airlines that is filing a lawsuit because he had to sit between the window of a plane and an obese man. The man couldn't fit in the seat properly and was pressed up against the other one for the entire flight. I don't know what the outcome was.

Some people can't control their weight- I had a friend who was overweight and used to exercise way too much in an effort to lose pounds- Nothing ever came off, no matter how much she tried, and she ended up passing out on the treadmill a few times.
I like to exercise- Just that. I don't really care about the fitness benefits, seriously. It just feels good to get the heart pumping and all that, plus I love to perform repetetive physical tasks for hours, which probably explains the drumming and hints at mental disorder. I got a set of weights, and a bench, both from Weider. I'm thinking of returning them though- Those things are heavy! Plus, whenever I use them, I break out in a sweat, and the next day, I have pains- In exactly the same muscles I lifted the weights with the day before! Smells like a lawsuit to me...

On my honeymoon, about 6 years, I noticed in the bathroom mirror that it looked like I put on a few pounds. More like 50 extra pounds. Very sobering, but being in the land of excess, Las Vegas, I decided that I would wait until I got back home to lose the wait. I can't pass up a good buffet!!

Needless to say, I avoided all fast food and excersied a little bit. I dropped 40 in about 8 months. 210 lbs on my frame didn't feel right. I feel good now at 170-175.

Fast food will kill you. I think that it's a shame that it cost a lot more to eat healthy at McDonalds (soup/deli sandwich, Mc shaker and iced tea), than a #1 Super sized.

I think that you just need to go someplace else. Denny's has a huge romaine salad for $2.99. Some deli stores have sandwiches with lean meat and a lot of spinach (ask for less meat and more spinach). Always try to get someone to split meals with you, rather than two people ordering large combo meals. But like I said before, some people need to work more on goosing their metabolisms with exercise, than on changing their eating, because maybe they already eat lots of veggies, fruit, a little meat and some whole grains.

There's a book about the American diet that's pretty good reading written by John Robbins. He's the son of the ice cream store giant Baskin Robbins. The book is called Diet for a New America. He talks about the indoctrination of the food industry on America. Look at who the target audience is for McDonald's. It's the kids. Get them eating this stuff as soon as they're weaned.

My 2 cents on this is ADDITIVIES and fert.(chemicals) that we now use to make everything grow faster and bigger. Organic seems to help some.

I've also recently lost a lot of weight. I never really looked overweight, but I was definitely out of shape. In my picture on Phil's photo page, I weighed about 210. I was up to 217 a few months before that. I now weigh 187, thanks to running, hiking, and altering my diet big time. I rarely eat fast food anymore, and have eliminated pretty much all junk food including soda. Sugar is just bad news, and there's about 8 teaspoons of it in a can of pop. I'll allow myself a very occasional treat, but even then I don't look forward to them as much anymore.

If people had to pay higher health/life insurance premiums because of their choices (diet, alcohol, drugs, smoking) I think you would see an improvment in health nationally. Also there is the misconception of health being directly related to skinny. I am 5'10" 190lbs. I have a slight belly But can run like a horse and do push-ups and weights daily. Last year at my physical my doc told me to eat MORE fat.

Most folks dont prioritize excercise into their day.Yes its time consuming and difficult but so is treatment for colon cancer, heart disease and diabetes.

That's a good point about not being too thin because one illness can cause you to be seriously underweight if you're already on the borderline. It's probably good too have a little cushion just in case illness strikes.

A few nights ago, they had an updated interview with Jack Lalanne on Dateline, the fitness guru that used to be on TV years ago. He's 88 years old now in in incredible condition for his age with a resting heart rate of 55 and a minimum of age related problems. He has had his knees replaced due to an old football injury and car accident, but largely his health is great for his age. When asked how he does it, his formula was quite simple. Limited animal products, avoidance of man made foods, daily exercise and some vitamin supplements. He actually looks and acts like he can hike someone half his age right into the ground. He admits that his parents had good genes and his mom lived to 96, but his dad wasn't so lucky and didn't live as long. His energy and zest for life should be an inspiration to even the most die hard couch potato, young or old.

Experts that have studied Jack's fitness over the years have concluded that the key to success is to put a good exercise program together and stick to it. Don't allow yourself to get out of shape and create a yo yo effect. Once you're at a good level just keep doing what you're doing. Jack did incredible things at age 70 because he never stopped doing them to begin with.
