No hiking for two more months - Arrrgh!!!
The orthopedist says my right ankle is dislocated just enough to require me to be in a full leg cast for six weeks and a walking cast for two more weeks. The cast goes on next Tuesday, which means I will be out of action until Nov. 3, just in time to consider voting for one of two flaming idiots.

Well, we does what we has to. No pity party please. This too will pass. Next spring will be the crash course in getting back into shape with November and December set aside for rehab.

Instead of looking forward to getting back to the Sods in October, I am now counting down until the first week of March. At least that will come before the windmills start going up if we lose the fight.

Tough break, Geo. You'll appreciate hiking even more when you get the cast off. Speedy recovery.

You could look at it as an oppertunity to focus solely on your upper body and get it in really great shape. Unless it already is, that is. =)

"Tough Break" was that really called for Dunadan? GRIN

Geo, sorry to hear of your misfortune. At least you have all winter to heal. Hope all goes well.

Thanks folks. I appreciate the humor. I've been laughing somewhat, although I'd rather not have the reason to laugh.

Yeah FG, even that comes with difficulty. Everything's an ordeal. But others go through it and so will I.

My friend Rick lost one leg in Nam and the other is filled with shrapnel. His sense of humor is his link to survival and sanity. What I am going through is nothing compared to his problems. He's been by to poke fun at me already and offer me one of his old prostheses. It's good to have friends you can count on.

My mom walks with a walker. We've been taking her out for walks around the block. I challenged her to a sprint, but she would win the walk around the block right now.

Sorry to hear about your dislocation. Hopefully you'll be back in familiar territory soon.

And... What FG said.

Look out. That guy's a nut.

As somebody commented, I will build up upper body strength. Then I'll rehab over the winter.

at my gym
they have a cardio machine where you use your arms, like pedaling a bike but with your hands. i've never used it but maybe you could look into it. it'd help you keep your wind at least until you get your leg back.

Which two flaming idiots are you talking about?

I had one of those leg breaking, feet flying out in front of me, slips a few weeks ago. I stepped on a wet moss covered rock on a downhill. It was the second time I had used my trekking poles and I wasn't very good at walking with them. However; I was able to catch myself before I hit terra firma and I am conviced I would have cracked my skull/back/leg without them.

Geobeet, it IS exercise to get around with one leg in a cast. It is like wearing an extra backpack strapped to one leg, and using only the other leg and your arms to move around. You will be fine, and think of all the ladies you will meet as they jump to offer you help wherever you go.

Hey Geo - so what's the down and dirty medical story behind the dislocation? Did you hike out? Did they put you in MAST pants? How about a traction splint?

Are they going to have to re set it and man is that gonna hurt or what? Where exactly is the dislocation? I bet your foot rotated in didn't it?

We have a saying in EMS that is BODI - it means Broken turns IN, Discolated turns OUT. That's an easier way to tell a possible break from a possible dislocation.

Anyway, I want medical details on the accident please!!!

Don't worry man. It's gonna be at least a couple more months till the outside temp starts getting down to a respectable level. Still too dang hot to hike now anyway.

Oh Psycho, you are a true pal. Now stay the he11 out of the tomatoes!

Tex, I was walking across several slabs of Homewood sandstone that were wet and slippery due to lichens or algae, whatever. My left foot slid out and the right foot got caught between rocks and twisted as I went down.

I have a clean spiral break of the right fibula just above the ankle. The ankle dislocation is very slight, but if it is not addressed it would mean certain arthritis and probably screw up hiking forever. So two months in casts is preferable to having foot problems on the trail for the rest of my life. And although the reality is that I probably will have about 10 or 15 years of hiking left in this body, I want to make the most of that time and whatever else I can grab. So, ... the torture device goes on Tuesday and I begin making X's on my calendar.

They will have to reset the ankle and probably the fibula as well. I think the bone wants to knit already, although I'm certainly not an orthopedist. It takes what it takes. So far the pain has not been a problem. It's mostly a dull ache, which is surprising.

Deep down inside I keep telling myself that orthopedists really do have you best interests at heart and are not really sadists, but I just can't help remembering those fangs! It's hard to get it out of my mind.
