Anyone ever had a slingshot as a kid? I wanna buy one for my nephew- I'll be the coolest aunt ever (until someone gets hurt)

Oh, yeah. We used to make our own too. Also bows and arrows and slings.

A stick with a "Y" and a piece of inner tube should do nicely (unless the kid is named Dennis the Menace)

We made our own, too. Competition to get the best tree branch, peal the bark and find the LARGEST "rubber band." And I did hear, repeatedly "you'll shoot your eye out with that thing." I still have my eyes, although I have glasses that resemble telescopes! :-)

Presuming the nephew is old enough to handle the responsibility of a slingshot, I'd still check with mom and dad to make sure you're not doing something they don't want. It should also come with a lecture on responsibility.

They are cool and make a nice wang when you let fly. Accuracy is not quite up to snuff, but that is the challenge of them. Marbles and steel shot work best. Stones tend to blunder off target due to aerodynamics.

They can not only put an eye out, but wielded properly could put a hurting on somebody.

Those Wrist Rocket doodads are fairly deadly, especially with steel shot.

but they work well on Psycho Squirrels if you can't use a Red Rider BB Gun.

thanks guys. His mom is ok with the idea, so i'm off to the store to get the fancy stlye with wrist brace and extra doo-dads. I am worried about shot all over the lawn- what about hand made plaster ammo that would disintegrate upon contact?

It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye
Then it's just a game - 'Find the eye'

I've had a slingshot for the longest time... haven't used it forever, but i used to shoot at birds and squirrels, and popcans and stuff... i know i killed a few sparrows, and even hit a duck, and a seagull once... ohh the good ol' days.

who remembers red rubber inner tubes? they were real rubber not synthetic. one tube was a life time supply of sling shot rubber. How about teaching him to make and use a sling and not a sling shot? much safer and more fun!

Nearly lost my right eye when a band broke on my wrist rocket several years ago, now I won't even pick one up.

It's probably a good idea to wear shooting glasses when using a slingshot. Just in case.

Safety glasses for sling shots!

That is a good idea!

I was thinking more in terms of ricochets. Never shoot at an old tire. They can bounce back bullets at certain angles.

Well, the sling shot was a huge success! He immediatly tried target practice against the back fence- we tried crab apples and they leave a nice mess.(I'm sure the wasps will like that tomorrow)And we talked about safety glasses, ricochets and suitable targets. I think he is ok with the safety part of it. He's a pretty good shot too. I had to beg for a turn- those things are FUN! I want one!
