whadda fah?
I watched a movie last night and can't figure out what it was about at all! I'm usually pretty good at following story-lines even if they get convoluted, but this one just had me baffled.
Has anyone seen Mulholland Drive and have a sense of what the heck was going on? I've seen Lynch stuff before and know he is "out-there" but even Eraser Head didn't confuse me so.

Mulholland Dr.

"A bright-eyed young actress travels to Hollywood, only to be ensnared in a dark conspiracy involving a woman who was nearly murdered, and now has amnesia because of a car crash. Eventually, both women are pulled into a psychotic illusion involving a dangerous blue box, a director named Adam Kesher, and the mysterious night club Silencio."

Yep! That has 'David Lynch' written all over it.

Here is my take on the movie. The entire first 80 percent, before the break was taking place in the main characters head and was her justification for what happened, her delirium. Then everything after the break was what really happened.

That performance at Silencio freaked me out!!!

I thought this movie looked like a "whatever, I'd rather watch that Elmo video w/ my daughter again" flick. But now that Flyguy brings up a freaky night club performance at a place called "Silencio," I'm totally interested. LOL!

Yah I'm thinking I might have to rent this one too. Probably won't be able to get my wife to watch it, though, she doesn't like freaky stuff. Or anything with an ambiguous or sad ending.

Mullholland Drive was ok, but not great. I thought both of the Nolan movies, the follower and Momento, were better and I liked Blue Velvet and Wild at Heart better as well.

you seem like you'd stay away from the obviously retarded ones, though. my college friends (who live near me) ALWAYS want something with romance, a predictable ending, and "hotties." eewww! Tarpy usually doesn't have the patience for intricate or unpredictable movies either.

We had a fav movie thread a few years back. There were lots of quality reviews. One of my personal favs is "The Usual Suspects."

I guess I should have qualified that Lyra. They all think I'm a crap video picker, but I like the ones I choose. I esp. like foriegn films or comedies. Has anyone watched "Orange County?" I thought that movie was frickin' hilarious. I love the scene where Jack Black is in his whitey tighties all hopped up on pills and vaccuming the hell out of his bedroom. It kills me.

I think David Lynch goes to too much trouble to be odd. I enjoyed Mullholland Drive but didn't understand it much but I don't think you get enough information.

Loved Momento lots!!!! For people who like quirky unpredictable movies Momento has it all over Mullholland Drive.

Thanks for reminding me of The Usual Suspects - definately a fave.

Momento? is that anything like Memento? if so, that movie kicks ass!

now, Usual Suspects was one that i really couldn't follow, or get up enough interest to try to follow.

ooooooooh... Dennis Hopper as Frank Booth in Blue Velvet. Man, that cat was Way out there!

I remember seeing David Lynch on Letterman. Apparently Dennis Hopper had gotten a copy of the script and called Lynch, saying, "I've GOT to play Frank Booth. I AM Frank Booth!"

So if you see Dennis Hopper on the street, you Might want to give that boy a Wide Berth, LOL

The way that reality was changed was somewhat similar in Momento and Mullholland Drive, but Hullholland drive just wasn't as well done. I think I heard it was supposed to be another tv show, like twin peaks and the first 80 percent was the show and the last 20 was added on to make it coherent.
brooks

Yes, it was originally filmed as as TV pilot, but had the scenes at the end added to help the film "make more sense." Yah. Right. Like any of Lynch's films really make "sense."

Of course, real life don't make a lot of sense sometimes...

Thanks Gojo Baby. I've seen Pale Rider, Dr. Zhivago, Glory, Unforgiven, Shawshank Redemption, and Monty Python and the Holy Grail. All pretty cool, if you ask me. I'm a little afraid to watch Deliverance, but Outlaw Josey Wales sounds up my alley.

Hmmmm. What is Gojo trying to say about me by picking such a list of movies?

The Outlaw Josey Wales does not disappoint. Some call it the best modern Western. One of my favorite movie quotes comes from that movie:

Jamie: Too bad we don't have time to bury those fellas proper like.
Josey Wales: To hell with those fellas. Buzzards have to eat, same as worms.

For me, the most interesting way to think about Mulholland Drive was to see it as something like a meditation on identity and impersonation and an affectionate attack on Hollywood. Sometimes Lynch pisses me off (because he keeps playing some of the same games), but he also makes me think.

I rented Mulholland Drive over the weekend. Weirdness squared. Kinda like a Kafka screenplay directed by Federico Fellini. I think every movie should have a topless lesbian make-out scene.

I see what brooks was getting at with his 80% delusion / 20% reality interpretation but I don’t think any time line ties it all together. The name changes alone makes that hard. The scene at ‘Silencio’ was pretty cool – speaking to the theory that reality is illusion – we see/hear what we want to see. I think the cowboy’s little talk was central – “a man’s attitude goes a ways in the way his life will go” (or something like that). I think the blue box was a cinemagraphic devise to shift from one reality to another.

My wife’s review: It was stupid.

That reminds me of an old girlfriend, the one I'm glad I didn't marry. I told her I liked Star Trek, and she said something like, "Why did they put pointed ears on that guy? Pointed ears? That's so stupid..."

She also never understood a single Far Side cartoon. Not one.

ObMulholland Drive: Sounds like one I'll have to rent when the wife is out for the weekend.

hey bit... you're making me appreciate my girl friend, the conversation I had with her and my son after seeing Mulholland Drive was at least as interesting as the movie. (She doesn't appreciate Star Trek, but so few women do).

I was imagining how the addition of a topless lesbian make-out scene would change the plotlines of some of my kids' favorite movies, like say for instance, Barney.

Brings a whole new meaning to "I love you, you love me" doesn't it?

Navi, Elmo has these videos that go over a certain topic for kids. For example, Bugs, Babies, and Farms or Birthdays, Dogs, and Bikes, etc. Elmo is a boy, so I wasn't implying that he was gay. I was thinking that he could have a video which introduces Vegetables, Rivers, and Topless Lesbian Make-Outs. LOL! I'm only kidding of course. I just thought Violin and Bit were hilarious.

speaking of topless lesbians, i recently experienced my first Penthouse. very un-exciting and un-sexy, i thought. i don't think i really like porn.

but, aHEM, back to good movies, you bunch of pervs!! Mulholland Dr. was about the only movie i didn't see this weekend...it was raining like a mofo.

has anyone ever seen *Waking Life*? now THAT is a crazy movie! it's sort of an animated documentary on the Meaning of Life, and if you like animation, this will blow you away. i've never watched anything so fascinating! the one bad thing i have to say about is, the different interviews weren't really tied together well...but then again, i only got to see about half of it.
