REI used gear sale?

“I keep hearing references to the REI used gear sale, but I'm a member and I haven't heard anything about this? Is it only in certain locations or are they holding out on me?

“at the one near me, they always have a section with used gear for sale. sometimes there's not too much there, though.”

“Our store has some out all of the time, but on occassion has a larger sale of slightly used, returned, rental stuff.”

“check rei.com, then find the store near you. they have events listed. it'll include the garage sale, if they're having one.”

The only way that I found out abou the one this weekend near me, was checking the rei.com website. When I became a memeber, tehy said that I would get the heads up n all the members only stuff and such, but I never seen a thing in the mail about it.”

“My REI announces theirs in the store and they send flyers to memebers that have recenlty shopped their store - this is the one in Austin. I'm sure the ones in Dallas and Houston have them too, but they haven't notified me by mail yet either!

The Austin store has a sale about once a year, called a garage sale, where they sell returned stuff in good condition or warranty gear. It is a big deal, you need to get there early and stand in line as they limit the # of people in that section at one time. I think it was the first 100 last year and then you can only go in when someone leaves. I think they held it in the warehouse part of their store and had to limit the amount of traffic to be in fire code.

I didn't get to go :-( I was hiking that weekend - Priorities!!

“Its members only and there is a lot of good stuff. The best stuff is usually gone very fast. You do have to be careful, becase a lot of it is damaged and it is all sold "as is."

Its a great sale if you are careful. I got a Hennessey Hammock (ultra-light) for less than 40 bucks and it was as good as new after I spent an extra 10 to buy the webbing straps. They also have things like single hiking sticks (from pairs) and pairs of sticks with one busted that can be great if you have busted part of a pair of sticks.”

“That was the first time I actually say it in action. I got there real early, well before anyone else. They all showed up soon after. There was about 30 or so people. They opened up the doors and you would have thought the backroom was filled with free money. Old ladies knocking down kids in strollers, all bets were off. The area that they held it in was real small, so the room got full real fast as soon as the first 40 people got in. I couldn't even get close to most gear tables. After 15 people cut in front of me, I decided one of two things are going to happen here. #1 - I'll loose it and start swinging (j/k, of course) or I was going to leave. Those people were nuts.

The good thing is, that I (if you can believe this) really don't need anything other than a good, cheap pair of snow shoes. Last year, I vowed I never would on a pair. So I picked up a pair of Atlas 733 snow shoes for about 89 bucks.”

“I completely forgot about it. My parents and I were crazy busy putting up trim and painting doors this weekend.”

“The funny thing is that I didn't get them at the garage sale. They are/were on sale on the regular store area. If you have the extra $$$, might be a bad time to pick up a pair.”

“I picked up some Atlas (10 series) during an on line clearance sale in June... its given me something to look forward to in the winter (that and my Hilleberg Nallo3).”
