Need Some Advice
I'm trying to pick out 20 songs to burn on a CD for a friend. She joined the Peace Corps. and is leaving for Cameroon, Africa in about 3 wks. She's going to be the only American, and most likely the only white person (I'm just trying to illustrate her isolation, not making a snide remark), in her village. She's going to be working on a tree planting agriculture project for 2 yrs. They told her to bring music and books from home. What kind of recommendations do you have. I want some light hearted, kinda' unique, but still definitely good 'ol USA stuff.

Leaving on a Jet Plane
Written and originally recorded by John Denver
Also performed by Peter, Paul, and Mary, and now currently performed by Chantal Kreviazuk
All my bags are packed I'm ready to go
I'm standing here outside your door
I hate to wake you up to say goodbye
But the dawn is breakin' this early morn
The taxi's waitin' he's blowin' his horn
Alreaday I'm so lonesome I could cry

So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
Cause I'm leaving on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe I hate to go

There's so many times I've let you down
So many times I've played around
I tell you now they don't mean a thing
Every place I go I think of you
Every song I sing I sing for you
When I come back I'll wear your wedding ring

So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
Cause I'm leaving on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe I hate to go

Now the time has come to leave you
One more time let me kiss you
Close your eyes, I'll be on my way
Dream about the days to come
When I won't have to leave alone
About the time when I don't have to say...

So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
Cause I'm leaving on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe I hate to go

Leaving on a jet plane

American Woman and that jet plane ones are good suggestions. I think she would like both, but Springsteen is probably not a good one. I don't want it to be tooooo USA. I don't want her to feel like I made her a CD that's like "Your best friend can not believe you left the United States to plant trees in a country plagued by AIDS." I don't think that way, I'm very proud of her and I think it will be a great experience. I just want some little pick me ups.

Seriously though, whatever you record, try to add in TV jingles, cartoon exerpts, TV and Radio commercials, etc. to make it more like whe's listening to a syndicated program. And make it eclectic, and not all the same type of music.

I think it's kind of silly for a bunch of 30, 40, 50 year olds to be picking songs for a 20 something year old we don't even know anything about.
To me, music is very personal and to important for someone else to tell me what is "good".
The late 60's & 70's were my period.
The 80's were more often than not bad.
The 90's has some good stuff.
Some of today's stuff is OK.

StoveStomper, I'm not (and neither is she) your typical 23 yr. old. I know who all of that music and love most of it. Some of your picks are really great suggestions too though, don't get me wrong. Everyone's suggestions are super good. I was having a really hard time coming up w/ a good list. Now, I'll be able to pick and choose and put together an awesome CD.

From reading your past posts it is very clear you aren't the "typical" 23 year old and have already been through more hard times than most.
You even made it through the "corn" slip up!
"My" selections are the playlist of a station most of the young adults around me listen to.
I DO know who these artists are and have heard most of the music and like most of it.
I have a niece your age and we both liked a lot of the same music untill she started on the boy bands.

You've gotta check out Sonia Dada. Also, another way to check out new music is to register at Amazon.com . Three are a fair number of downloads. Start making a wish list, and it constantly refines itself based on what you have chosen, offering you recommendations. Download stuff along the way.

I know it used to be pretty easy, I had a buddy who used to download MP3's from all over. But since the record companies started sending out cease-and-desist letters, it's a lot harder now. There's a website called mp3.com that has some stuff, but it's mostly bands you never heard of. Lots of chaff in the wheat there. Most of the stuff you're wanting to get, I bet isn't on the web for free anymore.
