... which is also cutting back, FYI... “Nikon Net lets people post pictures there. However, they are cutting back, too, just like Webshots. Ya can't expect these places to hold millions of photos and not charge. (even if you ARE a BIG CAMERA COMPANY and getting people on your site LETS THEM PERUSE YOUR **PRODUCTS**) Nikon Net (beware, it takes FOREVER to load) Here's a note from Nikon Net: In an effort to encourage our members to share their newest memories and safely save their older ones, we are changing our storage policy on NikonNet. We want to continue to offer the NikonNet service free of charge and to do this we need to keep our storage at reasonable levels. The New NikonNet policy will set storage limits and delete inactive members as follows: 1) The new free maximum storage space per account will now be 50 MB. 2) Any members who are inactive for 3 months will have their account deleted. 0n September 16, 2002, all accounts will have a maximum limit of 50 MB. You will have until September 30, 2002, to either remove your oldest photos from NikonNet above the 50 MB limit and save them to your hard drive, buy additional storage space or purchase a CD Album (see instructions below). After September 30, 2002, we will automatically delete any photos that exceed the 50 MB limit (starting with the oldest photos). Also, on September 30, 2002, we will begin checking for inactive accounts where users have not logged in to their account for 90 days. If you meet this criteria, you will receive a separate notice reminding you to log in to your account. If you do not log in to your account within 30 days of the notice, we will automatically delete your account and all of the photos in that account. For more information on how to find out how much space you are using, purchase additional storage space, easily delete your photos/albums to free up space for sharing new pictures, download the images to your hard drive, and purchase a CD Album, please read below. To help facilitate your personal storage of your pictures, we are pleased to announce discounted pricing for the CD Albums so you can continue to share the albums you have created on NikonNet for years to come. This special pricing is available until September 30, 2002. Thank you for using NikonNet. Sincerely, NikonNet Customer Service --------------------------------” 10:14:00 AM 8/31/02 “Thanks Lizs, Although I will probably succumb to the temptation of paying webshots and watching them go out of business. It's not the money, it's just so similair to what we just experienced. (Photopoint) This might be another option. I wonder if the other major camera manufactures have a similair site.” 10:33:45 AM 8/31/02 “"... to share their newest memories and safely save their older ones." "2) Any members who are inactive for 3 months will have their account deleted." I do so love irony.” 11:20:07 AM 8/31/02 “I tried using Sony's free photo hosting site too, but the upload was really slow no matter what way I did it (and I have dsl). I decided to pay Webshots, which I don't mind doing as long as they don't run off with my money like Photopoint did.” 11:30:38 AM 8/31/02 “LOL, alright I gave in and paid Webshots. I hope they survive” 10:54:54 AM 9/01/02 “I wish I had the money to pay webshots. I need a job! I also wish there was a way to pay for it monthly with the low price of paying for it for 2 years.” 11:08:45 AM 9/01/02 “I'm not sure paying is worth it unless you use it like SN. You can get 240 pics on an account for free. For many people its not bad for free.” 12:24:20 PM 9/01/02 “True, but I take around 800 pictures a year on trips. And although I do not always place the pictures on Webshots. I like the option. Hopefully they will not go under. I lost all 800 at Photopoint. I think SN lost a lot more!” 1:54:29 PM 9/01/02 “screw it!! Im paying!” 5:33:29 PM 9/01/02 “If you'd just archive your photos to CD you wouldn't loose any of them.” 5:34:47 PM 9/01/02 “Good suggestion Humanpackmule, I do that. Each trip is scanned to a CD. The labels that I type in though is only on the website. I am sure there is a way to save the labels too. I just do not know it!” 5:39:17 PM 9/01/02 “I posted this mostly to show that while it's another option, they are also only allowing so much space BEFORE THEY MAKE YOU PAY.” 5:43:13 PM 9/01/02 “LOL, it was sooo nice when it was free!” 6:01:07 PM 9/01/02 “That's how they get ya! <G>” 10:07:51 PM 9/01/02 “Ok WLD, that would be a problem. What I do is in Photoshop I type in my text descriptions on a new layer and put that text layer behind the image layer so that the text doesn't show. It's very easy to do but first you need to have a photo editor like photoshop that allows you to use layers. Once you have a program with that ability learning to use it is cake.” 10:08:29 PM 9/01/02 “Now that I have paid for Webshots I have the option to backup my pictures including the captions and titles I added to my hard drive or a cd. I like this feature. I've been saving my pictures all along, but not with captions.” 10:37:48 PM 9/01/02 “I paid for one account already. I have everything from June 2001 on CD, but no captions. I'll be working on the transfers for the next few weeks. I'll probably pay for another account in a few weeks. I have 3 accounts with over 1000 photos, and 2 others with 150+ (newest trips, transferring right now) and 300+ (Wind Rivers) photos. I hope Webshots sticks around awhile. I lost 2000 photos on Photopoint and never recovered them (too much work to put in order and redo captions).” 2:37:35 AM 9/03/02
