ALONE!?!?
Being a single female and having everyone and their mother remind me of murderers, I am very paranoid to be by myself for such a long period of time. Any suggestions? I have pepper spray but that doesn't help me sleep at night.

Maybe I went a little over the top with that last remark. I just wish everything didn't have to go the gutter so quickly! That girl was new and had a real concern and frankly I was embarrassed a little by your remark.Kinda like when you have visitors in your home and your husband farts ,no class, no respect and clueless. But, no hard feelings, you gotta be you.

Dirtyoldman WAS a little scary. Perhaps he is a little ballzier from behind the screen of a computer than out on the trail. How do I know that YOU would be good company? I don't believe that I saw a genuine interest to join on the hike.
No, a gun is not an option...too much money, don't know how to work one.
My comment about being alone was genuine and yet the responses made me feel ridiculous. Maybe a male cannot fully comprehend the fears that women face...But enough gutter debate, I just wanted a partner. Whether the partner helps calm my overactive imagination or is just someone to share experience of nature with is no matter. Apparently, I may just have to face my fears and hope that dirtyoldman is just a farce.

My husband never farts around company!
I can understand why a woman would have concerns about solo hiking. I'm just wondering why soliciting hiking partners off the internet seems like a safer proposition.

Springer. Your fears are neither unfounded nor are they ridiculous.

While the odds of anything happening to you on the trail are remote...they are certainly not impossible. For me, hiking is something that I do for enjoyment. The peace and serenity associated with the trail are the things that keep me going back.

I certainly don't do it for the blisters, rashes, insect bites and cramped muscles.

While DOM gave an "off color" reply, at least he had to say what he was thinking. This board is known for it's liberal approach to Freedom of Expression and Speech. At least to me, that is a good thing. You don't have to like or agree with anything on this board, but you can be assured that you can respond to it. Looks like you hung in there pretty well. Hope you hang around.

Despite what anyone may post here,,,I have found that everyone I have met from this board is someone I would hike with. Keep the post toward the top and someone will either find a way to join in or will let someone else know about your hike.

Good luck,,,,,and keep posting.

If I remember correctly, DOM got his moniker from his daughter, when he came in from working the the yard and she called him....

I believed it for a while.

I picked up on the liberal, tongue-in-cheek chit chat. I was just taken aback at first by his remark and hoped it was just that.
yes, I went through the whole struggle of posting on the internet, especially never having done any kind of "cybertalk", what have you. However, I did find one woman who was very compatable. After talking via phone certain circumstances happened and the plan fell through. Back to square one.

you could also try OAN Somebody usually knows how to get ahold of some of the AT "Angels", like Auntie Coosa.

Don't give up here either, lots of people along the AT. Give thanks to DOM for reinforcing your natural wariness. ;-)

LOL pathman!

ok springer heres the best advice that I have gathered from other thru hikers... find a partner on the trail.
simply put you will never know if you are compatible untill you have hiked together for a while. Also realise that no matter what you choose unless you expect your partner to tag your heels the whole time you will hike some of the at alone not that alone on the at ever lasts that long.....

Dont forget to pack your sense of humour... you will need IT.As to male creeps all I have to say is ....BOBBITT!EEEEK!!!

Thanks for all your "advice". Most, if not all, has crossed my mind already. All I was wanting to do is put the word out to AT hikers that I would enjoy company, not necessarily a second thumb up my back side...I understand I will be by myself at times. It seems that hoping to meet someone on the AT is the best way to go. I went the TT route however because I was on the trail for two weeks and believe it or not, I saw less than five hikers! All headed north!
