From: Rush in Rehab Hendrik Hertzberg in the New Yorker

"Limbaugh deserves compassion no less (and no more) than any other drug addict. It would be a travesty of justice to lock him up for ingesting chemicals, an activity whose only victim, if any, has been himself. But the four hundred and fifty thousand Americans already in jail for breaking the drug laws also represent a failure of justice, and an even bigger failure of policy."

Too bad he didn't overdose. Now that would have been a travesty.

Thinking of all those drug addicts he pissed off while shooting his mouth off on his little radio show. All are lineing up to take it out on his arse!

He won't go to prison though. He will pay his way out.

I think that Rush should get the same treatment that he recommended for everyone else. HE's a hypocrite for sure.

Politics Suck
"Italics and Bold Face"....Another cute but nonsensical soundbite.

No answer to my question violin.

As this thread goes on and on, with people piling on Limbaugh, I detect a bit of hypocrisy creeping, rushing in....as in, because Rush is a total hypocrite about drug abuse it's OK for people to go ahead and abuse drugs. What a load of crap.

If someone called you a "moral degenerate" that's wrong and hurtful. I'm not saying that you did this violin, but giving teenagers (young developing minds and bodies without the cognitve ability to fully make rational decisions) the impression that substance use, abuse, whatever is OK for them is plainly wrong. "Ya haven't got a leg to stand on".

All these cool computer generated pictures of Rush are very funny but in the end people are just playing politics with drug abuse.
I'm a father of teenagers and a teacher. This stuff is important.

If we want to discuss hypocricy, what about people who screech and rend their clothing over Freedom and Personal Responsibility... but only as long as the freedoms fit into their tidy world view?

Keep kids off drugs? Absolutely (you might want to include Ritalin and Dexamil in that). But to treat the entire populace as if they were twelve years old just isn't working. The so-called War on Drugs is a crashing failure and always will be.

If what Limbaugh does has an effect on anyone's life.... that's just sad.

It's a public health problem all the way around. The "war" is a waste of time. It cracks me up to hear potheads ( drunks by another name) rant about the virtues of medical marijuana ( of course it's useful and should be legal ) when
they're trying to justify their own
abuse.

(AP) Biotechnology company Pain Therapeutics is developing an abuse-resistant version of the painkiller OxyContin.

The San Francisco-based company said Wednesday its experimental gel capsule resists the easy tampering that turns the approved pill from a legally prescribed painkiller for long-suffering patients into a potent and sometimes fatal high for drug abusers.

OxyContin was hailed as a breakthrough in the treatment of severe chronic pain when it was introduced in 1996. But the drug has become a problem in recent years after users discovered that crushing the time-release tablets and snorting or injecting the powder yields an immediate, heroin-like high.

Pain Therapeutics chief executive Remi Barbier said the company's Remoxy is a sticky gel cap, which makes it hard to ground into powder and that the active ingredient — oxycodone — is difficult to extract when submerged in alcohol and water, two popular ways to refine OxyContin for abuse.

In the interest of balance, Rush reportedly said the following a few years back:

"Based on the reality of how we're going after cigarette smokers, the thing that we cannot do in the drug fight right now is regulate because it's illegal."

Hey. My quotation got cut off. Here's what I meant to post:

"Based on the reality of how we're going after cigarette smokers, the thing that we cannot do in the drug fight right now is regulate because it's illegal. Drugs are against the law and so the manufacturers are illegal. They're not even on shore; they're down there in Colombia and the Cali Cartel and they're working to poison the brains and minds of the future of America. And so what we do is to try to keep those drugs from getting in. And I agree with you that it's a half baked effort ...

It seems to me that what is missing in the drug fight is legalization. If we want to go after drugs with the same fervor and intensity with which we go after cigarettes, let's legalize drugs. Legalize the manufacture of drugs. License the Cali Cartel. Make them tax payers and then sue them. Sue them left and right and then get control of the price and generate tax revenue from it. Raise the price sky high and fund all sorts of other wonderful social programs.

Because it seems to me, flippant as though it may sound to you, that what gives us the power to do what we're doing, what gives the government the power to do what it is doing, state and federal, in cigarettes, is that it's a legal substance regulated by the federal government. And they don't have any such power and control over drugs because it's illegal. So let's legalize them and then go after them the same way ..."

WEST PALM BEACH, Florida (AP) -- Authorities are investigating whether Rush Limbaugh illegally funneled money to buy prescription painkillers, a law enforcement source who spoke on condition of anonymity said Wednesday.

In his third day back on the air after rehab, Limbaugh responded with a blanket denial of the allegations first reported Tuesday by ABC News.

"I was not laundering money. I was withdrawing money for crying out loud," Limbaugh said in his three-hour broadcast.

Law enforcement sources in Palm Beach County, where Limbaugh owns a $24 million oceanfront mansion, previously confirmed that a criminal investigation into a prescription drug ring involved the conservative radio commentator. His former maid, Wilma Cline, reported supplying him with OxyContin and other painkillers.

Authorities learned two years ago during an investigation of U.S. Trust bank in New York that Limbaugh withdrew cash 30 to 40 times from his account at amounts just under the $10,000 bank reporting requirement, ABC News reported Tuesday. A bank employee was reported to have delivered some cash to Limbaugh.

Limbaugh told listeners the report was misleading and said that he had the bank bring cash to him at his New York office "maybe four times, if that many." Otherwise, he said he obtained cash from a bank in Florida, where he was living.

Limbaugh's lawyer, Roy Black, did not return a phone call for comment Wednesday.

It can be a federal crime to structure financial transactions below the $10,000 limit to avoid the reporting requirement.

I don't think laundering is te issue. That's limbaugh speaking. I think it's illegal to move the cash with the intent of hiding the transaction from the government to buy drugs...
