“It's about to turn cold again, and although it's never time to stop buying gear, it's time for the reluctant gearhead to hit the local and online outfitters and start spending. What about a series of threads on various cold weather gear...i know there is some new stuff and also some old names that might not be up to snuff like they used to. What do you prefer when it comes to gloves...do you use a fleece liner...alone..with a overglove??..do you even use gloves? Does anyone have the Mountain Hardware Tempest SL?..i'm looking into those” 7:24:15 AM 9/09/02 “Search for the recent "Cold Weather Apparel" thread.” 8:00:25 AM 9/09/02 “crap..really..did i miss a serious gear thread among all the banter...shi!!!!..thanks artex” 8:03:22 AM 9/09/02 “Hey, OPIE. I bought some windproof fleece gloves from Wiley's last year. They keep my hands warm when they get wet and they dry pretty quickly. I also bought some Polartec-lined waterproof gloves from Lands End that work well.” 8:05:33 AM 9/09/02 “I got a pair of gloves off the sale rack at T.J. Maxx last years sometime. They keep my hands really warm, and I think I only paid $10 for them. They cinch at the wrist, and again further up the arm, so they keep the cold air out really good. Plus they have this rubbery stuff on the fingers so I can still do a few things with them on.” 8:37:55 AM 9/09/02 “up until this year, i only carried a pair of fleece gloves. there has only been one or two times i felt i really could have used a little more protection. the local outfitter has a full rack of patagonia triolet on sale reight now for $40 (60% off). i bought a pair for this winter.” 8:53:00 AM 9/09/02 “layers- first-Mountain Hardwear liners. Love em. cool weather alone or liner in cold. Second-Mountain Hardwear windproof fleece gloves. Love em. Option for colder weather-fleece mittens-Apocalypse Design, Fairbanks AK. Love em. Outer layer-nylon mitts, Apocalypse Desing, Fairbanks, AK. Love em.” 8:55:52 AM 9/09/02 if you need gloves.... “it's too cold to be hikin, ,lol. at least for my taste. i have some cool gortexy rubbery type gloves that i use when hunting. my hands usally sweat they are so warm. got um at wal-mart for like 12 bux.” 8:57:29 AM 9/09/02 “for real cold weather, I use a pair of Jack Wolfskin gloves and liners. For regular, I use a pair of fleece gloves from Old Navy that cost 5 bucks and take the liners.” 9:01:57 AM 9/09/02 “i've been using a pair of little girls lycra/spandex gloves that i found at wal-mart..they seem to really keep my hands warm even when wet...it's just that about an hour after they get wet when they start to get cold..and they dry ok..but never totally when out and about. For some reason i never really like fleece as my outter glove..too worried about getting it dirty or something retarded” 9:32:19 AM 9/09/02 “I've got some no-name polartec jobs that fit really tightly so I don't have to remove them to do stuff. There are some 'overgloves' to keep out wind and water. I got these bad boys last year with my dividend for seriously cold operations, but it didn't get that cold again for the rest of the season. I guess the gloves were soooo bad-ass that they scared the cold weather away, <G>. (and they were on sale for like 30% off, <ka-CHING>)” 11:03:23 AM 9/09/02 “Opie: Consider mits. Your hands are a lot warmer with the fingers pressed together then separated. Or gloves with an overmit. I know REI makes a pretty sweet-looking pair of mit/shortfinger glove combo out of windstopper fleece or polartec. Haven't used them tho...” 12:03:43 PM 9/09/02 “yeah, mittens! i got some from Galyans for like $20 or something, and they really keep my hands warm. i've worn thin gloves under them, too. plus, mittens are just so cute!” 12:06:18 PM 9/09/02 “Oh yeah! Cute!” 12:44:39 PM 9/09/02 “I get these really nice latex gloves from work but I dont think they are very warm. They do work great with lubricants and prevent finger prints. :)” 12:53:44 PM 9/09/02 “psssstt...d.o.m.'s a proctologist...” 12:55:50 PM 9/09/02 “Cabela's has some 300 gram thinsulate goretex gloves kind of lobster style with the index finger free from the others. They're very warm and you can still perform some tasks with them on. They're really made for hunters to have the trigger finger free to shoot a gun. I don't wear them to hike in because they're too warm, but for more inactive times they work well.” 12:56:05 PM 9/09/02 “thanks to lyra for bringing up the most important element of gear selection!!” 1:00:30 PM 9/09/02 “FG... I certainly have to deal with a lot of A_holes at work... Oh I do have a pair of thinsulate gloves that are a bit bulky and stiff but very warm” 1:08:23 PM 9/09/02 “My mother told us that in the days before Latex, no one wanted to shake hands with the proctologists...” 1:15:21 PM 9/09/02 One Glove That Beats Them All “Mountain Hardware Tempest SL Gloves. A breathable shell with a thin liner that packs so small they'll fit in yer fist and noone will notice. You'd think they were a Fall and Spring glove, but I wore them last winter in the harshest conditions, and they kept my hands warm and dry without the bulk of "winter gloves". Below is the specs from MH's website... TEMPEST SL GLOVE use | Backcountry / Cool weather active sizes | XS,SM,MD,LG,XL face fabric | Nylon Ripstop laminate | Conduit SL™ lining fabric | Vapor Therm weight | 3 oz / 95 g (MD) price | $39.00” 2:05:03 PM 9/09/02 “I've got some Thinsulate type lobster gloves that I use for very cold XC skiing. They work great. For backpacking/snow camping I prefer the liner, mitt or glove and overmitt combo for versatility and dexterity. If you have to do fine work, the liner works well enough to prevent frostbite at artic temps for a few minutes.” 2:19:57 PM 9/09/02 “shut yo' mouth, pepperDog, LOL! ;-) hey, as long as they keep me warm, i might as well go for adorable. i mean, i don't want the rocks and trees seeing me looking like something the cat dragged in! also, i hear there are a lot of model searches in the proverbial backwoods.” 2:24:24 PM 9/09/02 “TNF Pamir Windstoppers sure are a nice fleece glove. However, usually my NF pair get left at home, unless the weather is absolutely brutal and I stick with a pair of no name wal-mart stretch gloves. There like a few bucks and weigh less than a sock.” 2:24:57 PM 9/09/02 “Don't use gloves. Hands usually in pockets playing "pocket pool." And to make sure "Big Al" hasn't gone into hiding.” 7:54:04 PM 9/10/02 9:34:21 PM 9/10/02
