Highest PeakView Messages“What is the highest peak in your area/state and have you done it? I'm kind of a peak bagger and try to get to as many as I can. The main problem to me is the exposure. I'm still having a little bit of a problem with this, but as time goes by, I hope my fears go away. Well back to the question. Not yet, I should be doing it this weekend. King's Peak is the highest in Utah at 13,528 with an elevation gain/loss of about 5,080 within a 31.2 R/T. This will be my toughest hike/backpack I've ever done to date.” 8:56:24 AM 9/10/02 “Truchas in NM is the highest I have done at 13,102. Also did North Truchas Peak at 13,024 and Middle Truchas at 13,066 the same day. I'll be doing Wheeler Peak, NM 9/13-9/15, the tallest in NM at 13,161.” 9:06:23 AM 9/10/02 “In Alabama, it's Mt. Cheaha, which is a breathtaking 2,405 feet. When I went there, I don't think I ever actually went the the high spot, but I got pretty close.” 9:10:06 AM 9/10/02 “Grays Peak, at 14,267 - its up kinda by Breckenridge. Did that one w/ Torreys (14,267'), but that day was still half as hard as doing Longs Peak (14,255'). Something like 5k' in 8 miles (one way). Brutal. Kinda jonesin' to bust out a 14er again here in the next couple months...” 9:17:39 AM 9/10/02 “Can somebody dredge up that Mt Sunflower thread again?” 9:21:19 AM 9/10/02 9:24:48 AM 9/10/02 “We don't have any stinking mountains in Alabama, but I have been up Mt. Whitney (14,495') three times...” 9:26:44 AM 9/10/02 Mt. Whitney “In California it is Mt. Whitney, which eeks past the other 14ers in the lower 48 by just a few feet. However, it is an easier hike than most of the other 14ers as witnessed by the highly regulated traffic from Whitney Portal to the summit (11 miles, 6100 ft. gain). Climbed on August 5, 2001, along with OM, Naviguesser, Mozark, Miss Mozark, jvz, and Kent.” 9:27:12 AM 9/10/02 “In Florida the high spot is Britton Hill at 345 feet. The lowest high spot in the US. As to if I have done it. Why bother?” 9:28:57 AM 9/10/02 FYI 9:33:10 AM 9/10/02 California “14ers: 1. Mt Whitney (14,496', dayhike 22 mi r/t, 6100' gain loss, highest point in the contiguous US) 2. Mt Langley (14,042'/overnighter) 3. White Mtn (14,246') 15 mi r/t 4000' gain/loss) 4. Split Mtn (14,058', multi-day trip) 5. Mt Muir (14,015', dayhike ~20 mi r/t 6000' gain/loss) 6. Mt Tyndall (14,018', multi-day trip) 13ers: 1. Mt Abbot (13,704', overnighter) 2. Mt Ritter (13,157' overnighter) 3. Boundary Peak (13,140', dayhike) 4. Mt Tom (13,652', overnighter) 5. Mt Dubois (13,559, this weekends dayhike)” 9:37:40 AM 9/10/02 “Pathman, Good Luck Phil, Awesome pictures. Thanks for the info. Father Goose, Time to move. LOL humanpackmule, Sorry to hear that. Snow Nymph, I see you've been pretty busy. Are all those in CA?” 10:31:13 AM 9/10/02 “It's all good. I can drive and afford plane tickets. The peaks are within reach.” 10:35:48 AM 9/10/02 “humanpackmule, Good for you. My hometown is Pawtucket, RI and according to that chart the highest point in RI is Jerimoth Hill/812. I'm glad to be hiking/backpacking and I don't live in RI. LOL” 10:42:07 AM 9/10/02 “Don't get me wrong there is some nice backpacking here. Just don't expect peaks and learn to appreciate it for what it is. Not worse, just different.” 10:43:43 AM 9/10/02 “"Not worse, just different." Right you are.” 10:47:20 AM 9/10/02 “Lakewood (Britton Hill), Florida, 345 Feet Lowest High Point in U.S. The marker is wrong..it's a mile and a half from the actual high point...they put it on britton hill because it's highway accessible, and they could build a lil picnic area...the high point is on our land off Chow Lane” 10:57:18 AM 9/10/02 “The highest point in Mississippi is Woodall "Mountain" in the northeast part of the state. Woodall Mountain is only 806 feet above sea level. I live on the Gulf Coast. My house is 18.7 feet above sea level.” 10:58:45 AM 9/10/02 “Mt. Shasta twice. 14,162. Have scrambled lots of peaks, but that's been the highest thus far. Cotopaxi is in the near future -- 19,347!!” 11:01:34 AM 9/10/02 “I have a question about peaks? how did you get ready to do them? I have never done anything over 1500. What about acclimate (did i say that right?) I mean what did you do to prepare yourself? If you have never done something like that and don't have a big mnt. near you then what? you just can't go running up to the top without getting sick. The reason I ask this is becasue ive been invited to go next July to Mt. Antero. I have 10 months to get into shape. Can this be done in 10 months? If I feel that there is the sligtest chance that im not fit, then I will not go!!” 11:04:56 AM 9/10/02 “Eleventy hunnerd whachacallits. It was at Collyraddo. Me and my daddy was at Twin Ponds ther in Collyraddo. I theenk it was at Womanooch Wild Woods. Kno what? Ther was WILD LAMMAS! They was a leetle bit skeery but I DID NOT run the nother way! (o:3” 11:24:42 AM 9/10/02 “ok so if there are WILD LAMMAS as you say then will you go with me?? to pertect me??” 11:28:06 AM 9/10/02 “Now that's funny Opie. A high point that no one would notice being misidentified.” 11:43:07 AM 9/10/02 “wasatch, Boundary Pk is in NV and Montgomery Peak is on the CA side, and there is a saddle between the two 13ers. I didn't make Montgomery, but made it to the saddle. White and Dubois are in the Inyo Mountains, just east of the Sierras. The rest are in the Sierras” 11:48:20 AM 9/10/02 “Whitney is the tallest I've done and it was tough because of the thin air, but the trail itself isn't bad.” 11:49:05 AM 9/10/02 Mt. Whitney too... “Just did it August 7, 2002. To get "in shape" I tried to get out and hike often. I did another 14'r, White Mountain Peak a month prior to see how I'd do at that altitude. Stay hydrated and snack often! The Backcountry: Mt. Whitney” 11:50:10 AM 9/10/02 “In Georgia, Brasstown Bald tops out at 4,784 feet (a "4er"?). I've never been up there, though. Somehow I skipped past it to get into the Smokies, <G>. I got up to about 10,000 in the Sierra Nevada once... somewhere NE of Tuolumne Meadows back in '91.” 12:10:35 PM 9/10/02 “Algonquin Mt. (5114') - Adirondack Mountains in NY.” 12:17:34 PM 9/10/02 “I nearly summited New Jersey's towering High Point on my last attempt (3rd try) before I was driven back by a fierce snowstorm. I'm determined to make it one day.” 12:29:04 PM 9/10/02 “I've been at the top of Springer Mountain in Georgia. I've been higher in the Rockies, but it hardly counts since the ski lift took us most of the way.” 12:32:48 PM 9/10/02 “Hay Violin, The next time you want to try it, let me know, maybe i'll try it with you.. if thats ok with you....” 12:34:07 PM 9/10/02 “Be sure to acclimate first...” 12:38:17 PM 9/10/02 “hehehe I might have to, to be able to do your Mountain!!” 12:39:49 PM 9/10/02 “Yah, you don't wanna pass out at 1600', and have to have SAR come get you. You might get banned like Prowler, you know...” 12:40:06 PM 9/10/02 “Maple Leaf - To prepare for higher altitude hikes, I suggest a combination of strength and aerobic conditioning. You need the aerobic conditioning (treadmill, stairclimber, etc.) to compensate for the thin air and lack of oxygen. The strength you need for climbing over many miles while carrying your pack. When you get there, plan on staying very hydrated. Drink lots of liquids the day before you go up and drink LOTS of fluids that are not diuretics (e.g., caffiene is a diuretic and will cause your body to get rid of water. If you like coffee, drink lots of water and juice to compensate). Also, when you get there, try to spend one or two days at 6000 - 9000 ft. altitude somewhere to "acclimate". Once on the trail, keep hydrated. If you get a headache or nausea that will not go away, those are symptoms of altitude sickness. You best treatment is to get down to a lower altitude right away. Others on this board can give you more information. My experience is that with these simple precautions, most people don't have any trouble. My only symptom has been loss of appetite. So I force myself to eat enough to provide the energy I am going to need.” 12:55:05 PM 9/10/02 “Mt Elbert 14,433 - highest peak in Colorado, second in lower 48 to Whitney Bad freakin' sunburn at the top - lips a'bubblin' in 20 minutes.” 1:03:25 PM 9/10/02 “Katahdin - 5267' (many times) Mt Washington - six thousand something. last summer. Katahdin's not very high relatively speaking, but the elevation gain is 4000' or more depending on the trail up. 4750' from Roaring Brook to Chimney Pond then to Baxter Peak.” 1:11:00 PM 9/10/02 “Wasn't that Mt. Sunflower thread linked to a site called "Into Thick Air"? That was a pretty funny expedition report.” 1:13:07 PM 9/10/02 “Yes, and it's still around. It's a hoot.” 1:15:15 PM 9/10/02 duh, I don't live in two states... “whoops - to answer the question - Katahdin is the highest peak in Maine, the state I live in. Doing it again this weekend, wahoo!” 1:15:52 PM 9/10/02 “CA also has Badwater, -282' below sea level. There's a endurance race from Badwater to Whitney. Lowest point to the highest point. A woman in her 40s from Bishop beat the record by something like 4 hrs this year.” 1:17:30 PM 9/10/02 14,496' “Mount Whitney dayhike, 22 mile round trip with a 6100' gain/loss.” 6:44:47 PM 9/10/02 “yowza, WW. "Into Thick Air"... I can relate, LOL” 6:53:40 PM 9/10/02 1980 Ft “Mount Curwood in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Been There.” 7:23:53 PM 9/10/02 Mt. Arvon 1,979 “Mt. Arvon is the official highest point in Michigan. It is located in the Huron Mountains :) Never heard of Mt. Curwood, where is it exactly?” 8:59:54 PM 9/10/02 “Islandgirl, I stand corrected. Curwood is the "local" name for an adjacent peak. However, it is lower than Arvon, which was listed at 1980' when I was last there. I won't argue over a foot though, so 1979 it is.” 9:08:48 PM 9/10/02 12,000 “The highest mountain I've been to on a day hike, with prolly 20 lb. pack of camera gear, tripod, and huge, fast zoom lens (plus more) was from the valley by the ghost town of Winfield, Colorado in the Collegiate Peaks. That valley sits at 10,000 feet. Was camped by a stream there 2 nights. Then did this day hike up Lulu Gulch (a 4 WD road) toward Cross and Middle Mountains, which are just above and under 13,000 feet. Looking at topozone.com, we made it to beginning of final switchbacks, putting it at 12,000 feet. 2,000 feet elevation gain. Then I could do no more. BUT we had a delightful time in the mountain meadow. Moooooooohahahaha!!! As far as just getting to mountaintops by driving or, let's say, taking a cogwheel train (LOL), I've been to top of Pikes Peak twice. And for state high points, I've done a day hike (again with pack and semi-heavy camera gear) to the top of Harney Peak in South Dakota's Black Hills. 7,242 feet.” 12:32:44 AM 9/11/02 “Dunny, I don't know where that thread is, or what it's called, on the beloved high point in your home state of Kansas. But.........HERE'S A LINK TO THE HOME PAGE. EVERYONE -- especially you Florida-ites! (and maybe even Mapleleaf!) -- SHOULD READ THIS!!! Don't laugh too hard!!! Into Thick Air... startling summit trip report on Mt. Sunflower, Kansas” 12:48:55 AM 9/11/02 “As I recall, somewhere there was another funny-as-hell report on the high point in Nebraska... I think by these same people. If ya run across it on that Kansas page, or its links, please post!!” 12:52:52 AM 9/11/02 “the easiest 14er y'all can do in about 40 mins starting from about 8500ft ending at 14200 is MtEvans in CO... It has a paved road going up it and most cars can make it...nice ride too :)” 1:08:57 AM 9/11/02
