Heeeyyyyy .. .. I get it NOW !!!!View MessagesViewing posts 1 to 44 of 44 messages posted.
Having a lot of free time on my hands..... “While I was surfing the archives and associated sites. I came across the quote from the infamous Stove Stomper when he mentions this particular site .... "General backpacking info. The discussion forum is not for the faint of heart or easily offended". Okay,.... I get it now !!! This forum is not necessarrily geared towards teaching and sharing of gained information like the SignMakers site I belong to. Far from it. VERY far from it!! It seems like once you deem yourself as thickskinned and don't mind being razzed, you just might fit in. Well, once I separate these two websites, I can come here for fun and maybe just might learn something in the meantime IF I stay awake and take notes! I am not just a bumpkin that rolled down the ditch and wound up here. I searched you out thinking I just might expand my horizons enough to fit into an elite sport. Backpacking is a lifestyle in itself. I have done the car camping, boat camping and family tenting thing for over 40 years. I KNOW how to camp. But, to camp out using the very few essentials you can only carry on your back and see miles and miles of our beautiful countryside is quite another story. So, if there is no objections from the peanut gallery, I will stay and try to fit in. If I don't fit, I will just lurk in the shadows and take notes. And, for my first comments on the troll stuff, i am truly sorry if I came across bilergent and disrespectful. Really, I am sorry and please know that that is NOT my nature. On my SignMakers website, I am one of the founding members and we strive towards upholding the motto. .. "There is NO stupid question..... no matter how stupid it may seem". We aim to help others to perfect and preserve our "craft". I am, by trade, a professional woodcarver and sculptor. Just wanted to share this with you. Thanks for listening........” 4:47:28 PM 9/10/02 “In spite of the lack of "purity" in the forum, the majority the people here backpack A LOT together, share their wisdom freely, welcome others to join in the fun, and help one-another all the time. We have even had three couples meet through the forum and get married...with some other possibilities in the works. There appears to be is no political correctness or stereotypes....other than being thick skinned, of course. Just jump in!!!” 4:56:27 PM 9/10/02 Hey Trekker John “There are a lot of lurkers for this site (Cpt. Obvious, I know you're out there!) I was one myself for almost a year. This place is very much an acquired taste. I'm right down the road from you in Atlantic Bch., FL. Welcome aboard, glad you decided to stay!” 5:08:50 PM 9/10/02 “Welcome Trekker John. It seems you may have survived the gauntlet.” 5:11:15 PM 9/10/02 “TJ to start quit apologizing... its annoying, save it for when you screw up a trip and then only reluctently....” 5:13:01 PM 9/10/02 “Deer Mister Trekker Man - I am sawry if thees peeple have fended you. Some times thees peeple can be perty meen! If it will make you feel good, you can smell my stinky butt!” 5:18:57 PM 9/10/02 “How the He11 did I get "infamous"? TJ: When I first found this site, I thought these people were all deranged. I lurked for a while and soon realized these people BACKPACKED. They backpacked a lot and in between the "weird" posts was some good info and some good people (except for a couple that ARE deranged and a bunch of Trolls). Try not to get your panties in a wad and have fun. My first trip with some of these TTers is coming up in a couple of weeks and I can't wait.” 5:21:56 PM 9/10/02 “Welcome to hell.” 5:22:34 PM 9/10/02 Trekker, please meet sarabelle: “ ![]() sarabelle spell better than some people on this board. ;-)” 5:24:44 PM 9/10/02 “Welcome aboard, to really fit in, just go on a TT trip. If you live, you will be one with the message board.” 5:33:37 PM 9/10/02 “If not.... we will eat very well in camp :}” 5:35:06 PM 9/10/02 “I've stuck around this site because of the on topic threads. Some of these people know their stuff. Seems like a lot of the stuffy, cliquey, prissy old-school regulars have left or are lurking now, which is refreshing.” 5:58:43 PM 9/10/02 “Yes... I think 'deranged' captures it quite nicely. "All you need to start an asylum is an empty room and the right kind of people." Eugene Pallette My Man Godfrey (1936)” 6:12:48 PM 9/10/02 A question for YOU Trekker John... “How long have you lived in Gawja and in which area of it do you reside? Oh yeah, welcome aboard and enjoy your stay!” 6:23:45 PM 9/10/02 “I do enjoy the witty intelligent folks that post here and I suffer the others (you know who you are GRIN) How can anybody not like Sarabelle?” 6:50:14 PM 9/10/02 Are you sure you want to do this ? “Last chance to run! Just beware those hikes where the TT regulars tell you "it's an easy hike it's downhill both ways!"” 6:56:33 PM 9/10/02 “hey its all down hill from here!” 6:58:44 PM 9/10/02 Welcome- “Over forty years of camping and still sane,Wow. I have heard this site called the soap opera of the internet-” 7:05:35 PM 9/10/02 so there's this new guy... “i've heard a little bit about him... hmmm, welcome i suppose, though i sense you've been here a while, lol... too lazy for a proper welcome anyway :P” 7:13:33 PM 9/10/02 Trekker John “Word of advice,:: dont get sick on the trail w/ SOME west coasters! They torture you live on TT!” 7:16:04 PM 9/10/02 my history .. . in short . .. . “I was raised in Winter Garden, FL near Disney. We started camping back in 1956 by putting a boat in at Sanford and boating up the St.Johns River to the Oklawaha then camping out for days at a time in the Ocala National Forest on the rive .... anyways,,,,, Joined the Navy in '67 and toured all the East Coast countries. I have lived and hiked in: Italy, Germany, Austria, Sardinia, Puerto Rico, Bermuda and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. I retired in '87 here at the Naval Submarine Base, Kings Bay, GA. which is on the GA-FL line just minutes from Jacksonville, FL. Thusly, I have very quick access to Cumberland Island and other outward islands in Georgia and Florida. I have a Navy buddy that is a ranger on Cumberland so access there is not really a problem. Okay, now, I want to learn as much about BACKPACKING as I can. But, like many of you, I will just get out there and do it and learn as I go. I have been self employed for the past 6 years at www.kingsbaysigns.com and that is why I have way too much free time on my hands. I will be doing a weeks vacation in KY the week of Oct. 10th around the Mamouth Cave area. So, I will be posting some pages on that trip. As soon as it gets cooler, I will be doing some info on Cumberland Island as well. I lead a somewhat private and hermit lifestyle and really don't like crowds. I don't get drunk or rowdy and distance myself from those that do. Anything else??? Please feel free to ask. TJ” 7:40:09 PM 9/10/02 “What's your favorite color?” 7:44:12 PM 9/10/02 “mulch” 7:55:40 PM 9/10/02 “yer favorite color, not compost! again i welcome you TJ. don't let these freaks freak you out. their really jus havin fun, it's all good. i was interested to learn of your sculpturing. my best friend here in ark is a potter(maker of pottery). i appreciate 3-d art. nice work you got there.” 8:41:10 PM 9/10/02 “Cumby Eyland is a GOOOOOOD eyland! Be carful tho for gaters and armerdillers and dogfins and grabs... SPESSLY GRABS! DO NOT let no grab grab you with his grabbers! YOU WILL GET DED! DO NOT dreenk the watter neether! (o:3” 6:53:23 AM 9/11/02 “My father's favorite saying was:: "From here on up, it's all down hill" Thanks for the flowers . .. . .” 7:41:00 AM 9/11/02 “On some sites everything people talk about has to do with backpacking. On TT, you have backpackers who talk about everything that has to do with anything.” 7:45:55 AM 9/11/02 “Looks like you made it through your initial hazing. Don’t think it will be the last. We here at TT have our own motto that we strive to uphold: “They are all stupid questions and you’re dumb for asking.” That said, welcome to the monkey house.” 9:36:15 AM 9/11/02 “Oh man. You let the cat outta the bag. You can get special access on Cumberland Island. You'll have plenty of friends in short order :)” 10:57:30 AM 9/11/02 “Welcome to the funny farm! Make sure you take your medication on time, err make that make sure Violin takes his medication, and all will be well:0)” 11:14:59 AM 9/11/02 “I have often wondered what medication Violin takes and whether it comes with instructions, warnings or fries.” 11:27:31 AM 9/11/02 “TJ, today there are a number of active threads that will give you a true read on the real character of the people on this board. Days like this on TT are important to help keep a lot of the other nonsense in perspective.” 11:42:45 AM 9/11/02 “LMAO @ Lyndy!! i couldn't have said it better, Fritz.” 11:51:40 AM 9/11/02 “JOHN! Ol' Buddy, Ol' Pal! LOL” 1:09:18 PM 9/11/02 hey 1:13:44 PM 9/11/02 wait “never mind that...” 1:14:44 PM 9/11/02 sorry, i've missed a lot “now i'm even losing myself” 1:16:49 PM 9/11/02 “"I don't get drunk or rowdy and distance myself from those that do." oh well then I guess you will be hiking by yourself..... NOT j/k welcome! sit back and enjoy the ride it can and will get bumpy along the way. But isnt that half the fun?” 1:19:20 PM 9/11/02 Thanks, gang .. . . “I can not remember when I have felt these warm fuzzies inside of me.... Oh, wait, wait. . . yes I CAN !!! Last summer, Giardia Lamblia got me BAD !!! And then, shortly thereafter, Salmonela with an ENEMA !!! . .. .. Yes, I CAN remember these warm fuzzies !!!!” 2:20:53 PM 9/11/02 “That's far more than we need to know.” 2:24:33 PM 9/11/02 we're trailtalkers...... “with a backpacking problem.....” 6:44:18 PM 9/11/02 “Be warned - backpacking is addictive and can lead to obsesive behavior. You think about the next trip constantly. You think about gear constantly. You surf gear site until you have stats memorized. You seek out answers and end up on TrailTalk. TrailTalk enables you continue the obsession day after day.. Wait - maybe it's just me. Nevermind.” 7:00:39 PM 9/11/02 it's a disease “maybe there's something in the water... once ya get it, it don't leave, there's nothing you can do about it... it takes over your mind, body and spirit, it's a lifestyle” 7:12:51 PM 9/11/02 “You start collecting gear that builds up very quickly. The nursery closet is still stuffed with gear, as is a good portion of my painting studio.” 7:42:13 PM 9/11/02
