“The Stars held their Halloween party Sunday night, and for a while it appeared as if Bill Guerin would walk away with the Best Costume title.

He arrived dressed as Roy Horn. Yes, the one who survived the much-publicized white tiger attack during the famous "Siegfried and Roy" show in Las Vegas. Guerin came with a stuffed animal around his bloody neck.

A little while later, teammate Richard Matvichuk came dressed in a similar outfit, with one slight difference.

“'Course, when Gordie set his mark, the goalies were wicked bad. Now they draft kids out of factories, load the pads on them, give 'em a stick, glove and paddle and wish them luck.

Sawchuck, Gumper, Jacques Plante, man, those guys were something else.”

A little cynical Geo? I don't think that would apply to Roy, Turco, Belfour, or Brodeur to name a few.”

“No, but there are a lot of goalies in the league, Tango, who if Gordie were shooting against them would have increased his point total immensely. Gordie played in the six-team league until very late in his career, so a lot of his goals came against top flight goalies.

There were only six good enough to be the goalies in the NHL then. So every night there was a tough goalie in the nets. Heck Bernie Parent was not making it with the Bruins when the league expanded and the Flyers picked him up. And he was hardly a slouch. But since the original expansion, they just keep expanding. So the entire roster of goalies is hardly of the same caliber that Gordie faced in his prime.

Just a fact of the game to keep in mind. Not that Messier is not a good player, but that his point total comes in a different era under different circumstances.”
