“PITTSBURGH -- Mario Lemieux will miss the rest of the season after hip surgery next week, but he doesn't plan to retire.


Lemieux, who also owns the last-place Penguins, will have arthroscopic surgery Jan. 13 to remove a degenerative labrum and repair a tendon.

Lemieux said in a statement. "It is disappointing that I won't have a chance to return to the ice this season, but I look forward to coming back next year."”

“Flyers' defenseman likely out eight weeks

Flyers defenseman Eric Desjardins will likely be out of action for approximately eight weeks after breaking his right forearm in the Flyers 4-0 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night at the Air Canada Center.

Flyers’ team physician Dr. Peter DeLuca examined Desjardins on Sunday at the Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees, New Jersey. DeLuca concluded that Desjardins will need surgery on the forearm on Tuesday, and will insert a plate and screws to hold the fracture together.

“Initially [Desjardins] will have a splint, but after that he will not need any extra protection and we will have him start moving it as soon as possible,” said DeLuca. “Typically, this injury takes greater than eight weeks to heal.”

Desjardins broke the radius bone in his right forearm, and the fracture extends down towards his wrist. The injury occurred during a three-way collision with Jeremy Roenick and Toronto’s Mats Sundin.

"Mats got out of the way at the last second. Eric couldn't get his arm out of the way. It got stuck in between us," Roenick said. "It's unfortunate. It hurts us."

In 45 games this season, Desjardins has one goal and 11 assists for 12 points and 26 penalty minutes.”
