Czechs back on top of the hockey world after three
They didn't forget.

Booed off the ice by their fans in Prague last year after a stunning quarter-final loss to the underdog United States, the Czech Republic used that as motivation this year in capturing its first IIHF world championship since 2001, decisively beating Canada 3-0 in Sunday's final.

NHL, Players Association hold lengthy meeting Thur
NEW YORK (Ticker) - On the surface, the NHL and the Players Association are making a concerted effort to bring their stalemate to a conclusion.

The league and the union held their third consecutive day of labor meetings Thursday, gathering for nearly 13 hours to discuss topics aimed at reaching a new collective bargaining agreement.

With commissioner Gary Bettman and union executive director Bob Goodenow back from Wednesday's Congressional hearing regarding standard doping tests in sports in the United States, the groups declined to comment on the subject matter or progress of Thursday's lengthy session

Let's hope they get off their collective butts and fast!!!

There are several groups allegedly looking into new hockey leagues. Most seem predicated on the talks breaking down and a second lock-out season. This would seem to put the onus on the owners.

Geo, I couldn't stand another lock out. If that even has a chance of happening, they should let the buy out go through.

Report: Giuliani one of players in plan to form new hockey league

Daily News Wire Services

The Toronto Star reported yesterday that former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani and Canadian diplomat Maurice Strong might join forces to create a new professional hockey league if the NHL continues its lockout, which wiped out the entire 2004-05 season.

According to a 71-page business plan reviewed by the newspaper and circulated to prospective Wall Street investors, the new league would be called the International Hockey Association.

Meanwhile, the NHL and the players association held small-group discussions for 9 hours yesterday in an attempt to reach a new collective bargaining agreement.

The meetings will continue with a larger group today as the sides try to find common ground on team revenues and how to associate them to a salary cap.

According to the Star, Giuliani's New York consulting company would be employed to help raise as much as $5 billion in seed money.

A source also told the Star that Giuliani might act as an emissary to Rupert Murdoch, whose Fox television empire could become an investor and broadcast games.

"This is about bargaining power," Gordon Saint Denis, a sports investment banker with New York's CIT Group Inc., told the Star. "It's about the players saying, 'We'll show the league we have another option.' "

Ted Saskin, the NHL Players Association senior director, said several groups have proposed options.

"Most of these groups have made these proposals on a confidential basis and the NHLPA will not be commenting on them," Saskin told the Star. "Our primary focus has always been to reach an agreement with the NHL on a new CBA [collective bargaining agreement]."

This is above and beyond the group that wanted to buy the entire NHL. This would be a start-up league.

If nothing else, it should motivate the owners to get this thing settled.

Not sure we'd get a team in Philly. Ed Snider owns the Flyers and the rink.
Geobeet

I hope it does motivate them. But I'd rather see a buy out (same teams and mostly same players), new league new cities and be still my heart maybe no Penguins???? I just can't be so!
Tango

6/06/05

The NHL owners will never sell out the entire league that way. Won't happen, period, end of story.

But there are apparently several scenarios, and the fact that they claim they are making progress leads me to believe it will get done, perhaps last minute, but it will get done.

Another year shot would be ugly. Even delaying the start of the season would be bad. As it is, even if they start on time, my guess is a lot of fans would not go back.

On the other hand, the Flyers seem to sell out to people who have no idea what hockey is all about. Corporations buy the seats and give tickets away as promotions. The average hockey fan is blocked out by high prices. That's why the Phantoms are so successful in Philly. The fans are knowledgeable and passionate. They know when somebody is ragging the puck, and they let them know, regardless of which team they're on. This is where true hockey fans have ended up.

BUY THE PENGUINS????
PITTSBURGH -- A group of investors is interested in buying the Pittsburgh Penguins but not moving the team, a team spokesman said Friday.

"For some time now, there has been interest from a number of groups looking to invest in the team. We are currently in discussions with one such group," Tom McMillan said in a statement.

McMillan didn't specify who the investors are, but said team officials may release more details on Monday.

McMillan told the newspaper Mario Lemieux, the team's star player, who heads its current management team, would stay. The thrust of any deal would be keeping the team in Pittsburgh and building a new arena to replace 44-year-old Mellon Arena, the oldest and smallest building in the National Hockey League, McMillan said.

MORE
"All of our discussions with this group have been about keeping the Penguins in Pittsburgh, putting the best possible team on the ice and applying for a new slots license that will fund a new arena for our community," McMillan said. The Penguins lease at Mellon Arena expires in 2007.

The Penguins have previously said they would use revenues from slot machine parlor they propose building to help fund a new arena. Slot machines were legalized in Pennsylvania last year, although an oversight board is still crafting regulations for them and no state licenses have been issued to run slots operations.

Lemieux has said he wants to keep playing even though he'll turn 40 on Oct. 5.

Ours started as the Corestates Center, and then became the First Union Center. Everybody called it the FU Center. Now it's the Wachovia Center. We preferred FU.

The old Spectrum is now the Wachovia Spectrum.

The ballpark is Citizens Bank Park. Daily News columnist Bill Conlin calls it the Money Pit.

I still call it The Igloo too. Funny thing is I was calling it that when talking to my roommate in college and she had no idea what I was talking about even though she was from Pittsburgh. At least she knew who Super Mario was.

NHL, players agree on salary cap

TORONTO (Reuters) -- The two sides in the NHL lockout have agreed on a salary-cap system, eliminating the biggest stumbling block to the resumption of play next season, according to a Canadian newspaper's website.

Although details of the proposed agreement were not released on Wednesday, the Globe and Mail reported that a source close to the owners said there would be a team-by-team salary cap, based on a percentage of the revenue of each franchise.

It's amazing how pissed off the hockey fans are in Detroit. I'd say 3 out of 5 cars used to have a huge redwing decals on the window, or a flag somewhere. They're almost all gone. No jerseys worn anymore. The Wings are really hurting Hockeytown's feelings.
