The third period and overtime was just about the best hockey I've ever seen - better even than the Miracle on Ice, which was my previous best game.

Games go down to the wire, into overtime, or into a shootout. There's close checking, great scoring opportunities, great saves, end-to-end rushes, see-sawing leads -- it's like playoff hockey. This is the kind of hockey I got into back in the 60s. When the game's over, I just sit there amazed.

The shoulder injury led to his decision to retire, he told the Sport daily, a Slovak newspaper.

"I have talked to my doctor and he did not recommend a third operation," Palffy told the newspaper

Palffy had 42 points (11 goals, 31 assists) in 42 games with the Penguins, but all 11 points in his last 11 games were assists. He hadn't scored a goal since Dec. 16 against Buffalo, Michel Therrien's first game as coach.

Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury feared the worst when his coach wanted to speak with him early Wednesday.

Instead of sending him to the AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre, coach Michel Therrien told Fleury he will be with the Penguins for the rest of the season.
