Hey guys!

Just wanted to let you all know how much I enjoy hiking with all of you. You are good friends and great hiking partners. Pass the Beer.

Looking forward to meeting some of you in the future and to someday hike with you.

Is anyone close to the "Thumb" and do you ever hike this area? Glad your weekend was a good one.

Hold your right hand palm up. That is the lower peninsula of Michigan. The Thumb is the area of Michigan located, well, in thumb. Personally, I pretty much live in the wrist.

Hiking in the thumb? Well, the closest the Mountaineers have gotten is Gratiot-Saginaw State Game Area. It's a nice place not far from the thumb. The only places really to hike there are in some SGAs and Albert Sleeper State Park. I've hiked a bit along the Cass River, but I'll bet there are some nice unknown trails in there. The area is incredible flat, marshy and full of beet fields.

Prowler, you have one thumb for two hands? Where is the other? Do you have to bend over to see it?

Yes, the MMs rock. It's such a joy to hike w/ you guys. And, I also enjoy that we spend time together that doesn't involve hiking. Good friends, indeed!

In the thumb...I've hiked at Port Crescent State Park. Some nice trails, but not a lot of miles. Checked out the Sanilac Petroglyphs this summer. I was unimpressed. In general, not too much hiking in the thumb.

I had a great time on Saturday, and Friday as well, drinking beer and whatnot. :)

What, no stellar hikes in Grindstone City? At least a ramble in the Thumb won't tax the knees too much with a bunch of ups and downs.

Wish I was close enough to stop over for a brew with all the MMers, but I'll raise a glass to you from afar.

I think I'm the closest to the thumb. I'm in the tri-cities, Midland, Bay City, Saginaw. All my predecessors were from the thumb.

2mph, lmao....you're funny =).
Come along on any hike...there's a HUGE group hike planned for October on the NCT near Jordan River Pathway. It'd give you a chance to meet everyone at once, or almost everyone. We don't usually hike and camp in groups of twenty + but we have out of town visitors coming. Check out the "Walkindude is coming to Michigan" thread.

And don't forget, MMers, I may have moved to Wisconsin, but I'm still a Michigander in my heart. (Reino proudly wears her M hat and carries a maize and blue M golf bag, even, here in Badger land). Me, I was a Spartan for a while. Yes, you rock, MMers.

Well, I just got back from Hoist Lakes, via the...
......Jordan River Pathway. When cupp and I got up to his place Friday night, we changed plans and went to Jordan River this weekend. It was a very nice hike. We hiked in Saturday, stayed that night and Sunday night, hiked out this afternoon. Had a chance to take a look at things for this up coming event. Trip report and pics to follow soon.

RL and Tarabull - you guys were having that conversation about words people don't use correctly (or something like that). I was wracking my brain to remember what word people around here use incorrectly - ORIENTATED. Don't they mean oriented? Drives me crazy!
Smiley girl

I may be wrong here (and, knowing TT, someone will DEFINITELY correct me if I am) but I think they are similar. It may be have to do w/ placement in the sentence. But, I'm not sure and I don't feel like consulting a dictionary right now. :-)

Yes, RL, myself and le Subtil were having that discussion. Pretty comical, too.

According to our BIG dictionary up here among the faculty offices, orientate can be used as a verb tense of orient, or as an infinitive (to orientate) that means to point toward or face the east. Basically orientated in most usages is just a more ornate form of oriented.

I always thought "orientated" was wrong - as in "we need to get more orientated with this software."

Sassafras, thank you very much for the invite. I'm on the road so much it's nearly impossible to plan anything. When in October is it? I follow TT while traveling and will try to work something out. In the meantime I'll continue to throw in the odd comment, or barb.

Probably heading to Marquette for work in Nov. If I do, I promise to let you know! Perhaps we can hook up in ye ole stomping grounds.

2mph, The trip is planned for October 11, 12 and 13, with folks arriving on the 11th and 12th. If you are interested email Tarabull you're home addy and she'll snail mail you maps and an itinerary. It will be an opportunity to meet twenty + TTers. It may well break the record for a TT group trip! It should be lots of fun and definately memorable.

I was reading one of the Detroit newspapers the other day and Le Subtil's brother made it into one of the end-of-year retrospective columns. It kind of made me laugh.

The Mountaineers are like the Knights of the Round Table.

The Buckeyes didn’t like the way we were constantly segregated, shamed and ridiculed by the MM group and have now splintered off to form the Buckeye’s Martyr Brigade. No longer shall we be walked upon by these dogs! We will wage jihad upon that “state up there”!

Now, if we can just scrape together enough gas money, beer and M80 firecrackers so we can carry out Allah’s will…

Nothing defunct about it; The Michigan Mountaineers are alive and well. In fact, I've done several hikes over the past many months w/ some MMers.

I was disappointed, tho, that there was no Christmas party.

Nigal - I've never considered you one of them... you're a true blue and maize fan and, therefore, a Michigander as far as I'm concerned!

Please allow me to clarify; I didn't say we were defunct, I was repeating something I'd heard, a little sarcastically, to see who was around.

Nice to see most of us are, still around.

Hope to see you all soon.

Thinkbubelz & I are from Michigan... :-) We had fun last year at the little gathering Tarabull had... :-) Would love to hike with some of you sometime.... My snowshoes are ready to play in the snow, if we ever get rid of this icky weather and get some real snow on the ground!

Mine is too Ruby. I don't think anyone posts on the yahoo groups site anymore. Or maybe Birch and I have been banned, lol. Everything seems to be word of mouth.
I'm not sure who the moderator is now.
