New Hennessy Hammock

“I got my new hammock at REI in Nashville today. It's the Ultralight Backpacker A-sym model. I'm gonna try it out next weekend. Anybody got any setup tips or advice on it for me?”

“Have a pi$$ bottle handy if you don't mind the extra weight/space. no fun getting in/out of hammock tent & sleeping bag in middle of night, esp. when it's cold. Use it & drop it to ground when done. Or stick it in the foot of your sleeping bag for a foot warmer (j/k) or serve "apple juice" to your hikin' buddy in the morning (j/k).”

BTW: as the Walkingdude pointed out on another HH thread, guys who position their gear appropriately don't need a special bottle to avoid having to get out of the hammock to pee.”

“well, counting on your gear being in the right position in a hammock tent in the middle of the night is not exactly smart as far as my experience goes. I must admit I've never tried it in my HH, but it seems right off hand to be more complicated and more prone to accidents than having a bottle handy. Just MHO, though. Besides, if you purchase a more robust hammock tent, it's not going to have hennessy's floor opening anyway. But I guess that's not a factor if the HH suits all your needs.”

“Getting up at night to pee sucks no matter what you're sleeping in. Sure, the HH is a little more trouble than most options, but perhaps we're avoiding the real issue. I plan on inventing a nocturnal human waste disposal unit you can use from the comfort of your tent or hammock. It'll consist of a tube with a funnel at one end for you to piss in- The tube leads to an air compressor just outside the tent, which will push the urine through another hose which leads to an ordinary garden sprinkler. This will spread the waste over a large area, minimizing impact. I'm still working on a way to get fecal matter through the tube. It'll probably involve some sort of vacuum, and you might want to consult your proctologist before use. After going through the sprinkler, it'll help fertilize the environment though.”
