Just Squeezed A Burrowing Sumpinorother FromMy DogView MessagesAND I DON"T LIKE IT “BuddurDog has a lump on his side so tonight I took a good look at it. There was a small hole ontop with a dark thing down in it. I thought it was a thorn or something of the like so I got an alcohol pad and tweezers and started to squeeze. Well goo started to ooze out, you know, the puss like goo, but it was coming out as if like playdough. So when I used the tweezers to grab and pull it out there was no thorn but a small (~1mm x 3mm) transparent gray ribbed tube with the pus coming out of it. It looks much like a shedded skin of a snake would, but more like a cocoon. I don't like the implications that come with this discovery.” 10:06:26 PM 9/15/02 Buddur “Never had anything like that happen to our dog. I think a vet visit is appropriate! (Yucho!)” 10:17:20 PM 9/15/02 “Hopefully we wont have to put budder out of his misery. vet,NOW!” 1:51:39 AM 9/16/02 Sheeeeeiiiiitttttttttttt “A larve would even be a better way to describe it.” 3:09:15 AM 9/16/02 “Doesn't sound good. Get it checked!” 3:12:54 AM 9/16/02 “Take the dog to the vet thats the best thing to do! 8|” 6:34:14 AM 9/16/02 “take the dog to the Phillipines and have some stew!” 7:06:21 AM 9/16/02 “Buddur, this sounds like the old fasioned "wolf worm". Here in the South, a fly lays the egg just under the skin and this little thing develops. Upon reaching maturity, it just crawls out and drops to the ground to finish maturity on the ground to one of those nasty lookin green blowflies. It does not burrow deeper into the animal host. I saw a squirrel last winter with one and it does look awful. It is not parasisitic in nature, but, I would assume the wound could become infected if not attended to. My dogs had them when I was a kid and I remember my grandmother really hated these ugly headed things to no end as she pulled them out just as you described. The only bad ones are the ones you can't see. Like, heartworms, etc. Just keep the area clean and monitor it till it heals. Put the pupa in a jar of alcohol if you still have it and next trip by your vets office, have it looked at.” 7:44:14 AM 9/16/02 “I'm with Trekker John on this one. Sounds like a Wolf Worm to me. I don't think that there is a specific critter called a wolf worm. I think it's just a term used to describe that type of insect infestation of another animal. Usually what happens is that the animal gets a wound and a fly (or something) lays eggs in the wound. Everything that I have heard about them is to keep it clean and all will be fine. Personally, I'd go to the vet.” 7:56:17 AM 9/16/02 TJ &HPM are correct “We have those nasty problems in the South. Vets call then warbles. I found this on the net... "Warbles are the larvae of the bot-fly (Cuterebra sp.). Warbles appear as a swelling or lump just under the skin. Upon closer examination you will see that there is a puncture or hole just above the lump. This is an air vent for the larva, which has burrowed into the skin. They will usually be found around the neck and legs of an animal, but can be found anywhere on the body. When the bot-fly lays her eggs on the animal, the eggs hatch into larva which then burrow into the skin. They wall off the area, and become a parasite living off the animal. Larval development can take anywhere from 19 days to around 60 days. The pupal period can be as short as 28 days, or as long as 7-11 months, depending on the time of year and temperature. The newly hatched larvae are usually 2-4 mm long and grayish white in color. As they grow, the color changes to reddish brown and then to dark brown. Fully grown larva can be from 20-42 mm long and 7-10 mm wide. When you find a lump or swelling on your pet, check to see if the an air vent is present. If so, you are probably dealing with warbles. Take your pet to your vet right away, left untreated the warble can cause infection."” 8:06:51 AM 9/16/02 jeesh louise! “thank God i never ran into this one before but, sounds like you got some good advice. i'm sure visions of the movie ALIEN came to your mind as it did mine. at least it wasn't a spam burrito.....” 8:20:07 AM 9/16/02 “Yuck.” 8:26:19 AM 9/16/02 “I think TJ and HPM nailed it. We don't hunt rabbits until cold weather because of the "wolves". The opening day for the season has been known to still be too warm.” 8:32:26 AM 9/16/02 “A co-worker of a friend of mine had bot-fly larve in her CHEEK!! Swollen red lump . . .black dot . . .got bigger and bigger and bigger . . . then hatched . . . .” 8:47:51 AM 9/16/02 “that sounds totally discusting.... yuck... i have a web sight that i use quite often, since i have 3 dogs, 1 cat, 2 birds, and one mother i law.. hee...sorry.. anyhow its PetEducation.com... it has got some really good information on any type of pet and all kinds of medications, descriptions.. surgerys... and so on.. there has been many things that we have gone thru with our dogs.. cancer, elbow sergery, mastitus, degenerated spine, cysts, lime disese, so if anyone has any questions requarding dogs and their health, just let me know..” 9:02:24 AM 9/16/02 “i think that its called "cuterebra" you may want to make an appointment with the vet, because the dog may have an allergic reaction to the larve.. or what's left in the wound...” 9:10:11 AM 9/16/02 “Sounds #&%!$ing gross! Can't you post a picture?” 10:06:42 AM 9/16/02 “Oh My Gawd! I am totally afraid to get a dog now. I hope Buddur dog is okay.” 10:09:10 AM 9/16/02 “Eewwww. Just to be on the safe side, I'd take the BuddurDog to the vet. Give him smooches for me!!!” 10:09:39 AM 9/16/02 “*gag* you *mmph* didn't have to descibe *urp* it so vividly!” 11:22:33 AM 9/16/02 “In KY/TN I've always heard them called a wolf, info is dead on, disgusting but not normally harmful to the host. Clean wound well and get antibiotics if infection develops. See them a lot on small game animals, I've never had one on a dog but it could easilly happen.” 11:51:45 AM 9/16/02 violin needed a pix 12:28:28 PM 9/16/02 “Save the vet bill, the dog will be fine. If not, no big deal.” 12:40:32 PM 9/16/02 Got Home And The Boy Was Happy & Smiling “...a swelling or lump just under the skin. ...a puncture or hole just above the lump. ...are usually 2-4 mm long and grayish white in color. That describes the lump and THE THING to a T! Visited a vet nearby my work at lunch but he was out and is booked solid for the next 2 days. The receptionist said it sounded like a warble, which I never heard of until then. I know the thing is out because I squeezed it out, it and all the guts inside it. Now it's just a 2-3mm light gray larve-like tube with guts squished out one end....it kind'of looks like bacpac. I just hope there's not anymore in him. I alcohol swabed the area good while poking and squeezing, and I'll definitly keep a close eye on it.” 1:52:23 PM 9/16/02 “As long as you got the bugger and its mess out the only concern now should be infection.” 1:55:20 PM 9/16/02 “Gosh, Buddur, I'm sorry to hear about this thing on Buddur Dog and I hope he is okay. HOWEVER, this is the most vile thread I've ever read. (Well, one of 'em anyway. LOL!)” 2:00:14 PM 9/16/02 Warbles “That link wasn't so gross StoveStomper. Buddur - You should check it out and look at figures 2, 3 & 4.” 2:00:54 PM 9/16/02 “Oh yeah. Check out the links on the bottom of this page. The hole left behind is called a 'warble pore'. Sure sounds like what you're describing.” 2:04:09 PM 9/16/02 “So it's called "Warbles" too? Huh, I learn something new every day.” 2:05:11 PM 9/16/02 “HPM, I think it must be "Wolves" in the South..... And "Warbles" in the north.....” 2:50:22 PM 9/16/02 “That's what I was thinking. Those wacky yankees, next they are going to tell us that iced tea and barbque is seasonal. ;)” 2:53:16 PM 9/16/02 Reminds me of the Night Gallery “The good news is that the earwig is dead... The bad news is that it was pregnant” 3:46:22 PM 9/16/02 “that looks fukin delicious!” 4:43:50 PM 9/16/02 “OH jeeze, that's so nasty....” 4:49:04 PM 9/16/02 “mmm.... they're great with spam-jelly!” 4:53:31 PM 9/16/02 Violin and StoveStomper “wow. . . ya'll sure know how to do your homework!! were you this good in school, too ?? Just a wonderin . . . (i'm impressed)” 5:00:31 PM 9/16/02 “It has been a while since I've had to dig one of those babies out. Verrrry brave, Buddur! Cuterebra (cute-ah-ree-bra) is the real name, though there not very cute. I think its time to give that boy a bath! (Tip: Tea tree oil shampoo will keep those pesky bot flies at bay for next time...) ^..^” 5:25:27 PM 9/16/02 “Mmmmm... spam burrito with guacamole and sour cream... Oh sorry, wrong thread.” 6:29:56 PM 9/16/02 “Mmmmm... spam burrito with guacamole and sour cream... Oh sorry, wrong thread.” 6:29:56 PM 9/16/02 Antidote “Tony's got a bot-fly in his forehead... Ginny's got a G Worm in her shoe... Daves got leaches... Mikes got flue... Everybody's got a parasite..I've got you!!! Can anyone name the band?” 11:16:52 PM 9/16/02 “G=guinea worm” 11:21:28 PM 9/16/02 “Can I guess? b/c I'm probably going to be the only one to get it... PAIN!” 12:10:01 AM 9/17/02 Anybody Know What It Could Be? “ Poor Buddurdog. Last month I noticed his left eye was bloodshot and it had a small bloody lump on it. I took him to the vet and he gave me pills to fight the infection inside and a salve to put in his eye to aid in healing. He figures that Buddurdog got poked in the eye, which wouldn't surprise me what with all the dayhiking we do. Well the lump is gone but now his eye has a gray-bluish haze forming from that area. You can even see huge veins in his eye in that area also. I'm taking him to the vet again on Monday in hopes that the Vet knows what this condition is and if there's a remedy for it. I just hope nothing happens to his good eye. Can you imagine me leading a blind dog on hikes...a seeing eye-human for my dog. 8P” 7:57:34 AM 7/31/04 “all I see is a red x.....” 8:01:17 AM 7/31/04 Here's A Pic Of Him “Webshots Link ![]() Thanks to Pennsy for the Pic February 2003 Treadway Mtn Summit Pharoah Lakes Wilderness, NY” 8:12:18 AM 7/31/04 “what a beautiful dog.....I hope he gets better soon!!!!!!” 8:16:58 AM 7/31/04 “Sorry to hear the news, Buddur. Hey, I remember this thread from a few years ago! haha” 9:08:08 AM 7/31/04 “I thought that title sounded familiar.... Get Well Soon, BD!” 9:29:57 AM 7/31/04 “That's the summit where I abandoned Bobo on that very day. We couldn't shake him though, as he showed up at camp just before dark.” 10:57:32 AM 7/31/04 “Great pic, Buddur! Hope B's eye heals up!” 11:19:32 AM 7/31/04
