Think again!!
Just read a story about a guy in AZ. who got snatched out of his bag while sleeping by a Black Bear! Walked in during the night, grabbed him by head/neck and started walking off into the woods with him.
The story is pretty scary based on what is usual Black Bear behavior.

The story is in FHM magazine. They have a website. Check it out!

"These guys had grilled up some steaks and left the wrappers near where they were sleeping,"

"The nearly 200-pound bear was out scavenging due to the dire drought conditions in the Southwest, experts said, adding that Black [the victim] and his brother didn't take proper precautions to keep him out of the neighborhood."

(from http://www.foxnews.com)

The victim shot the bear dead. I'm sorry the man was hurt, but it's a shame that the bear had to die because the two men were careless with food wrappers.

Yeah, as much as I love to do it, I'm coming to the conclusion that cooking meat in the wild is a bad idea.

You'd think they'd opt for an easier life somewhere with more moisture and trees and berries and stuff...

I'm amazed at how much wildlife there is in remote dry areas here.

Not on the website.

Here goes:
April 19,2001
Camping in the Santa Rita Mountains with his brother Jason, the two had fallen asleep next to the fire.
Cody awoke with his head in the bear's mouth!
"The bear was on all fours and had me off the ground. I was hanging by my neck for his mouth. My arm was dangling and I could'nt reach the ground with it. I was trying to keep him from dragging me into the woods, but it was me against the power of a automobile.I was going with him no matter what. I was being shaken like a dogs chew toy."

About 3a.m. Jason ( the brother) woke from his sleep and sensed something was off.(No sh#T!) "I woke up and there was no sound, just pitch black. I couldn't see him, but I knew something was attacking Cody. I had a instinct"

Half asleep Jason charged out of his sleeping bag screaming out the hulk whose mouth was clamped down on his brother head and neck. "I ran up and hit it on the side, it was all instinct". Jason landing a hockey stlye cross-body block, but the mass did'nt budge. (Duh!)

At this time Cody was coming to amd found himself dangling above the bears paws. "It took me a minute to realize what was going on" "At first I thought why does my brother have me in a headlock, giving me a noogie? He had only one beer!"

" I could hear the bear biting down and crushing bone, but I couldn't feel any pain" I could feel the bear hot breath "pumping" down my neck" It's like the Vulcan grip kind of thing"

OK I;m getting tired of typing. The brother ends up charging the bear a few time with body slams and gets him to drop his brother. He drags him back to their car (stick shift that he can't drive. So Cody gives Jason a crash course in driving a clutch and off they go to the E.R.

Dozens of puncture wounds, a severed major artery to the brain, torn muscle tissue, multiple broken vertebrae and extensive nerve damage, this guy got worked!!

The guy now only car camps in a camper and sleeps with a loaded 357. Can you blame him?

A few year back, one of my co-workers and his friend went to plant trees in the north of Quebec. One night they (the whole camp) heard screams of terror from one of the tents. A large black bear pulled a tent (with 2 people in it) to the edge of the trees. The 2 guys in the tent were fortunately able to unzip the tent and run out. The next morning, the supervisor went and tracked down the bear and shot it. Maybe one of the guys had smuggled food into their tent (it was never proven). They all were told never to have any food in their tents.

Actually this is more common behavior for black bears than it is Grizzly. Black bears tend to attack people to eat them. Grizzlies attacks are more often caused by unexpected encounters.
