“I get there largest coffee for 1.85 including tax, conveinence store like Exxon, shell, etc is 1.45 to 1.65. At least the coffee at Starbucks is fresh.

Now those other drinks they serve I don't care for. Most of the time I don't even know what someone is ordering.”

“I don't think I've ever got a regular Grande sized coffee at Starbucks for over $1.79 + tax. I know theve got their Muchomochafrappacappachino specialty drinks that can be pricey, but even this hillbilly doesn't think the $1.79 for a cup of good strong coffee is all that bad.

“A Starbucks opened up across the street from the hospital where I work. The coffee is good and I get it all the time. I don't mind paying less than two bucks for a good cup of coffee. The Egg Nog Latte is good too...it's the holidays ya know.

I can get coffee in the hospital cafeteria for a buck...coffee in the office for free...both of them suck. I'll take a Starbucks anyday.

“MDSHiker - If the coffee in your office sucks, there must be a reason for it. Why don't you take over the task of making coffee. I'm sure you can make some good coffee. Be a hit in your office.

I recommend using "Cadilac coffee," aka Maxwell House. it is now $6 for a can with 34.5 oz. at Dollar General. It was recently raised from $5, so it must have been improved!(?) Maybe your coffee should be made with some Spring water w/o all the chemicals.

“I personally don't have an issue with Starbucks...I was a barista for 9 years at an independent shop in an area that had multiple SB's nearby. Still did great business. Yet, before I went off caffiene, if traveling, I ALWAYS stopped at SB's. Why? Because they are like McDonald's! Always the same, whereever you go. From WA DC to Aberdeen, WA it never changes. Also beyond that....they have the cleanest bathrooms around. Rest areas? Hah! Liek I wanna battle thru all the skanky hookers loitering there! I'll just zip into SB's! Heck, I know where EVERY SB's is in WA state ;-)
That and I have perfected how to get freebies from them ;-) lol!

There are some good "home grown" coffee shops in the town where I live and they have very good coffee products. One of them is near my house and has internet access and is a cool place to hang out...lots of housewives in there...must be nice to have time to "hang out". Noooo...I'm not bitter!

I like to grind beans and make coffee at home too...it's very good and I enjoy it as much as Starbucks. The decaf beans I buy taste great.

“I work for Starbucks, (but not in a store), so my perspective is not just as a consumer.

As with most big companies, ( or any enitity I guess), there are good things they do and not so good things.

As many have noted, they are opening up stores at a rapid rate. In Vancouver BC, there are two stores kitty corner to each other that have a huge amount of traffic and have been there for several years. They wouldn't be able to do that unless there was the demand. Just as many people have a strong dislike for the company and/or their products, there appear to be many others who like the company and the products.

Undoubtedly there are things they could do better, but there are some things they do very well. Here in Seattle, there is a sense from the general public (I've picked this up from friends and acquaintances, reading newspapaers etc), that Starbucks' promotion of good coffee has enabled smaller operations to do well. Whether that's from the public learning what good coffee tastes like or wanting to support the little guy rather than the 'behemoth' I don't know - probably some of both.

I've also met many people who have expressed an interest in working for Starbucks. One of the funniest questions I was asked regarding this (from a TT-er) was "I don't suppose Starbucks has a need for geologists ?".”

Did anyone see that program on Bob Costas (I think) about Jackie Robinson's son? He's lived in a poor village Africa for years now and has gotten the local coffee growers together to form a coop to market their coffee in the US. It's really helped the local farmers and the village. He refused to capitalize on the fact that he's Jackie Robinson's son, but he did try to get Major League baseball involved. I forget the name of the brand, but it sounds like a good cause.”
