my son came home from school and in his homework he had to write a short essay on this question.

"would you rather be
1. Beautiful but poor
2. ugly but rich

so what would you have said and why.

neither. Money and beauty alone don't make you happy.

beautiful but poor! you could always marry rich or rob a bank or something... poor is easier to change than ugly.

Maple Leaf, you should be in there complaining about that one. What kind of message does that assignment send? Sounds like something a soap opera writer would come up with.

Is this the stuff their teaching kids today? Stupid question IMHO. Just be who you are and be responsible for your actions. "Be really whole, and all things will come to you." Lao Tzu

Had I been a teacher grading the content of responses. I would have given Pathman an "A+" for saying so much with so few words.

there are pros and cons for both sides.

it gets the children to think.

my son came up with "beauty(sp) is in the eye of the beholder"

he got it from watching Twilight Zone haha
but it worked.

Poor IS beautiful.

Rich IS Ugly.

That should irritate some republicans.

well, Lyndy, i don't really like soap operas, literally speaking (except Passions, just a little bit...okay, a lot). ;-) i'm just a sucker for drama in general! hence my "reality" tv addiction.

you don't watch soaps, DO YOU?? hehe!

I was flipping channels, and happened to catch the scene where Sonny gets killed on General Hospital. Really made me wonder why I used to watch shows like that.

But seriously, Pathman totally hit the nail on the head, IMHO.

I disagree with the question in that it imlies that the two options are mutually exclusive.

i don't really see the problem with asking a kid to write an essay about that. i bet there would be a lot of creative responses, and seeing as how they have to deal with Society's (hack, ptooey) ideals anyhoo, why not get them to ask, "beautiful to who? rich in what way? blah blah blah?"

and speaking of looks, i really believe that the way a person looks is indicative (to a certain extent) of their personality, disposition, fate, or what have you. just thought i'd throw that in! hehe.

I just think that a student would be anxious about an assignment like that. Should they follow it in a literal sense? Should they ignore the literal and go with the "neither" type answer? Discussions like that are great, but I had many sleepless nights in school because of assignments that could be interpreted different ways and could result in a bad grade as easily as a good grade.

Rich or poor, I think EVERY ONE may?? wnat to be rich but thats far off. Its a dream that some may or may not have.

To everyone, beauty is different, yes.

But also, to everyone, riches are different.

I say: One who possesses true beauty (inner beauty, beauty of the heart and soul) is already rich, and that is a beauty and a richness that can never be taken away.

I think this is an interesting question for kids. I'd be more interested in how the kids interpret it. Guessing the teacher will get back some pretty neat stuff.

Nothing wrong with getting kids to think a little.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Smart kid you've got there, maple leaf.

Beauty and richness come from within your spirit. It is our ACTIONS that make us beautiful and rich. Ugliness and poverty come from within our spirit as well. I couldn't answer this question as an adult because neither one is true in its relation to the other. You are who you are...no matter how much money you have or how good you look. And quite frankly, in this world, the ONLY person to fit one of these categories is Bill Gates. Ugly but rich. Your son has the right answer...it truly is in the eye of the beholder. As stated above, I behold that Bill Gates is a homely looking man but he is rich. Sorry I couldn't be of more help...8)

Have him write the essay on the premise "I'd rather be who I am, whether rich, poor, ugly or beautiful!"

How could a teacher argue with that?

Phaedrus, you do realize that you are richer than 90% of people on earth. Calling yourself ugly is not a healthy self-image.
