Yeah, what he said.

We were about a quarter mile from where FRRTr heads down for good.

There is a lonely flame azalea(rhododendron calendulaceum) between the trail and where we camped.

Quote from the guide
"Sleep like a log... in a 1895-era lumberjack boardinghouse."
I think we were being posessed by some of those lumberjacks the way we were throwing back all that chow!

Enough chit chat!
I want to see pictures! I'll see if I can put some pressure on G00SE when he gets home from work to get ours uploaded. I ain't making any promises, though.

That Roaring Plains trail is absolutely one of the best in the Mon, particularly where it comes out into that meadow with Porte Crayon looming ahead. I could live there.

Fiddlesticks.... now I'm really pissed about my knee, I know I missed out on a damned good time. Post some pics, so I can bask in my misery.

Skully, gonzo, buddur..... was it better than taking in the meteor shower last December on the North Fork?

10 + 1 Dog In and 11 + 1 Dog Out?
Glad to hear everyone had a great time. Of course I knew it all along. Now you make me to want to go there more.

One question - "Canyon Rim" trail. Where it starts and ends? Does it follow closely the Eastern Continental Divide line on the map? Are there any trail signs and easy to follow? Or, pure bushwhack?

Finally got online here in Alabama. What a day yesterday was!

You guys rock!

I sure wish we had hills like that Boar's Nest trail in Michigan. Wow!

Every time I meet new TT'ers I'm amazed. Everybody already said this, but you all felt like old friends right away.

If anyone gets any chance to meet more of their fellow tt'ers, do it!

Good morning, le Subtil

I wanna get with you guys again.
That was so much fun!

Going out with hardcore backpackers is great, everyone knows what they're doing.

Biertree-
Take a look at Jonathan Jessup's map.
From the pipeline we followed the yellow to orange to red and took the red trail all the way to the purple trail.
The yellow and orange sections were hard to follow.
In places the six-foot, gnarnly bushes were touching across the trail.
There were rock cairns to follow now and then.
We did do some bushwhackin' when we lost the trail.
Parts of it are along rocky slopes looking down on Long Run Holler(Canyon indeed!).

I will be back there for the long Thanxgiving weekend.
Tis better to use one's butt muscles for locomotion than as a cushion during several days of glutony.
I've received dispensation from "the families" to dishonor the holiday with my absence.
The temperature should range from 20 to 50 at that time.
Anyone?

I hope to persuade a couple of teenage boys to join me.

Did you guys stop at the "tiny church" near the lake(Silver Lake?).
I stopped there for a photo op once.

There are some tamaracks right along the road at lake side.

We all gawked at the tiniest church but we didn't do much stopping on the way home.

I find it kind of crazy to be lumped in as a "hard core" backpacker. I like it. =)

Tom, plan a week in Michigan and we'll show you some beautiful trails in the UP.

It was shortly after the tiniest church that y'all disappeared from my mirror.

Well......you guys had a long haul on Saturday.

Canyon Rim Trail
Aha, the map helps! And thanks to HOI and Tom for reminding me Jessup. I was looking over Allen & Bruce book and I completely forgot about him. In fact I know he took some folks to the same area same time you guys were there.

I am trying to come up with a loop that doesn't involve shuttle. One possibility is SOUTH PRONG (starting at either E or W end) - CANYON RIM - ROARING PLAINS - BOAR'S NEST. EDT is Oct 26 ±1 week.

I have a couple of Qs for you veterans. Did you find any campable site at W end of RP? Was there water source along Roaring Plains?

I have to this before snow comes. Thanks much.

There is a good place to camp on the south side of the trail just before it goes down toward Laneville.
That would be at the "foot" of Porte Crayon.
We got water about a quarter mile east of where we camped.

From the point where the Roaring Plains Trail leaves the small stream just above the pipeline until you reach the Flatrock Run Trail, there is no water unless it has rained recently, and then you might find a small trickle along the way. But don't depend on it.

Those Plains Really Do Roar
We did just under 24 miles, including the pipeline walk to the North Fork Mtn views and me walking down Flatrock Run Trail then back up it to meet up with Tom Terrific and his crew and back down to that night's camp.

Now after being there and seeing many other campsites while hiking the trails, I can't wait to go back there with my own itinerary in mind. I'm camping by the North Fork Mtn views, then the one just before we got to the Flatrock Run trail the next time I'm there.

They are awesome and they just whet my appetite even more. Can you see Seneca Rocks that close? From Roaring Plains?

I am planning to head out there in 2-3 weeks. I'd appreciate any advice you can give me re campsite, etc.

Getting homesick
Hi, I'm George. I'm a Roaring Plains/Dolly Sods addict.

The homesickness starts when I slide behind the wheel to leave. It is not alleviated until I find a rock with a view on my first night back. It is a terminal illness, I have to inform you all. There is no cure; there is only the medicating power of going back for a short time.

Looking at photos only aggravates the illness. Any picture of heath meadows, spruce groves, sandstone boulders, flag trees, or views of ridges extending off to the horizon is quite likely to aggravate the illness and lead to rash decisions to return without regard to such necessities as vacation time, money, fuel for the car, or sufficient food for the trip.

We could just form a TT support group and be there for one another in our times of need.

That is my story; I am anxious to hear yours.
