Newbies on Blood Mountain...

“Sarabelle, Gizmo, and I took two neighbors up Blood Mt. last Thursday for an overniter. The ascent just about KILLED them, but I pushed them, and we all made it.

We car-camped at Lake Winfield Scott on Wednesday night as a primer. Slim had camped only once, and that was many years ago. Slimmer had never camped. Neither had ever backpacked.

We had the campground to our selves. The weather was dank, so the crowds were nowhere to be seen. Midweekness helped, too.

We encountered nobody at the trailhead, on the trail, or atop the mountain. One dayhiker passed our camp near dusk - he appeared to be headed back to Neels Gap.

The soup was thick, so visibility was nigh nil. It made for some cool sights, tho. I would deliberately get ahead of the guys just so I could stop and watch them materialize out of the fog -
it was quite skeery!

The dogs and I jumped a buck and watched as he silently disappeared into the mist. Kewl.

The full moon created a translucent glow through the foggy cloud that swept continuously past in the incessant wind. Kewl, too. The density of the fog was ever-changing, which created continuously varying degrees of brightness. Trippy.

We were never able to see anything but whiteness from the vistas - too bad.

The newbies were astonished at how quick and easy the descent was on Thursday - we stopped only once, but never dropped our packs.

We were wet when we reached the truck, but nobody complained. It was a refreshing wetness. We reached ATL at 6:30... just in time for some good'ol Friday traffic.”
