This week PBS is replaying Ken Burns documentary "The Civil War." So far it has been excellent.

It's a great film with almost all primary source material.

I wonder what the population of this country would be now if all those lives hadn't been lost.

Last night's episode was cool. It's humbling to see what my 3X Granpa Zion, 49th GA Vol. Inf., went through for all those years.

We hike? Yeah... right.

I hope that Lee fella wins... he ROCKS!

hey garfum!
i love the ken burns stuff. even though he kinda gives me da creeps, lol.

i've always been fascinated by the civil war for some reason. i read a 6 part book series( all 2 inches think) by carl sandburg about the life of lincoln. it was written in the late 30's andd early 40's, when some of the players were still alive to tell about it, and it was still fairly fresh in the country's mind. fascinating stuff.

i was thinkin that same thing last night garf..

My 3X Grandpa Baxter died in a Yankee POW camp in Indiana...I have another relative who died at Shiloh, but he was a Yankee...many others who served on both sides in that war.

Grandapa Zion had a brother that died of disease. From what I gather, he died in a GA hospital.

I have prolly dozens of kin that fought - some on the "other" side.

The Sons of Confederate Veterans moved my Great Grandpa's (Zion's son) old log house from it's stead to the old family church grounds. They refurbished it to it's original state. That prompted me to look into the organization, which led me to Zion. I'm considering joining, but haven't gotten farther than an application packet.

Each branch may be different, but a representative of the local chapter spoke at a local civic club(Kiwanis) that I'm a member of. He launched into a racist, hateful diatribe that was way, way over the line. I think everyone who was in attendance was offended and embarrased. Hopefully, all of the groups aren't like that.

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of (SCV). I'll know soon enough, tho.

Personally, I have alot of admiration for the soldiers on both sides of that terrible conflict, with a wee tilt toward the Confeds. Forget the cause - the American War for Southern Independence is one of the great conflicts in the world's history. It was nervously watched from all corners of the globe. The courage and determination of the average foot soldier is unsurpassed, as were the horrors they experienced.

I joined the USS LCS Association a few years back in recognition of my dad's participation in WWII. My membership in the SCV would be a similar gesture.

I recently read a book recommended to me by sandy(he posts everyonce in a while) call "Cold Mountain" It's basically a guy who gets disinfranchised with the "cause" and the war effort and deserts from the hospital to go home. It takes him a month or so to hike to Cold Mountain. Very good read.

Lots of people are facinated with the civil war.

I used to work with a guy who was a Civil War Re-enactor. Kind of a cool-strange hobby. He travels all around to do re-enactments. The "unit" he's in is confederate, but they are all willing to switch sides to balance the forces for a better battle re-creation. I went to see him in a battle at Pea Ridge, Arkansas. Pretty cool. Actually it was quite cold, but these guys were willing to suffer. He is into backpacking also, just more primitive during re-enactments.

My great great grandfather was a civil war deserter who went up into Canada and became a lumberman. The rest of my ancestors didn't come to the country (from Ireland) until after the civil war. But I have always been fascinated by the history. I've been looking for the Cold Mountain book at the library because I heard that it was a really good book.

September 17 was the 140th anniversary of the Antietam/Sharpsburg battle in Western Maryland.

For a few years, about 20 years ago, I had a subscription to Civil War Times Illustrated.
There were interesting stories about obscure details such as Jews in the Confederacy and Gen. Joe Wheeler(he was five feet tall).

The fact is that it took the killing-off of a significant number of the Confederate moneyed elite to take the fight out of the C.S.A.
They were, after all, the rotten ba$tards who set the whole thing in motion.

Good point Tom. The guy I mentioned who spoke at the civic club included the Jews in the CSA as an example of how "enlightened" they were. I thought I would barf.

And the politics of war doesn't alway reduce well into a sentence or two.

If you're calling my last post a diatribe then I wasn't clear on my intent. When I said that I would barf, I was referring to the hypocrysy of the speaker.

There was a Catholic chaplin for a Tennessee unit that was killed in the battle of Jonesboro, GA. My K of C chapter was instrumental in having a memorial stone placed on the lawn of the county courthouse in J'boro.

I met an Irishman at a local bar a couple years ago. He was working in the area. He asked for directions to Tara, which is "in" Jonesboro. I told him that Tara didn't exist - GWTW is fiction. The poor bloke nearly cried. I told him that there is a museum there, but no Tara...

They're filming a movie version of Cold Mountain right now. WHere are they filming? Central Europe. Why? There's no place "rural" or "primitive" enough for filming in America.

Central Europe is more rural and primitive than rural North America? Surprising, skeptical, but I have never been to Europe, so I don't know.
