OK, with all the travelling this group does, I know we've got some people who drive fast and use radar detectors...

I have some questions.

1. Do they really "work"? Have you ever gotten a speeding ticket while using one?
2. How fast do you drive when you use it?
3. If I buy one, are there certain features I should look for?
4. I've seen ads for a device that say it makes you "invisible" to radar, by sending a scrambling signal back to the radar gun. Anyone have one of those?

I am always a safe and courteous driver. I'm not looking for a way to drive at extreme speeds, I just want to make good time on those long trips, and decrease the chance of getting a ticket on my daily 140-mile-round-trip commute.

No, no, & no!

MOST highway Patrol use Lazer GUNS know whcih makes the RADAR detecter pointless. Instead get two speaker magnets and place one one the front drivers side bumper (of course under the hood) & one under the drivers rear bumper if your worried that bad. It will deflect the radar signal! It doent always work but its in the Aarchy Cookbook!

As for Lazer they will get you. BUT, there is away to excape the lazer gun by immeadiatly slamming the brakes on to drop your speed instantly. Then lazer gun will not stop at an accurate reading untill a steady speed is read.

IT DOES WORK IVE DONE IT THOUSANDS OF TIMES! bad on the breaks thow, but beats a 200$ ticket.

They do work, but depending on how fast you are driving, where the cops set up, and local terrain, you would be in the detecting zone when it goes off. They are not absolutly foolproof.

The ones I had also generated a lot of spurious signals. For one thing, it went off whenever I passed a Radio Shack store (a Radio Shack detector I don't need).

The are illegal in Virginia and Connecticut, so you have to not just turn them off, but stow them out of sight. In Va., I can tell you that troopers do stop people for it when they spot it.

Most state police in the east will give from 5 to 10 miles over the limit based on the imperfection of radar sets. Most give 10, and a Virginia trooper on I-81 with a handheld radar in the median strip waved at me to speed up one day when I dropped down to the speed limit (that was in the days of nationwide 55 mph).

With or without radar, I'd stay within of the speed limit. Heck, it's 65 on most interestates anyway, and 70 is as fast as I ever want to go.

Of course, in Pennsy Fritz, only the state police use radar. Locals use VASCAR or a similar device. These are timing devices that compute the time it takes to travel between two predetermined spots to figure out speed. Radar detectors are useless against those. Other jurisdictions are likely to use timing devices as well, so I figure the radar detector is simply a useless device, entertaining, good for finding Radio Shack stores, but otherwise useless.

I have no experience with scrambling devices. I would fear using one, since it could trigger a response in the radar set and a trooper could radio ahead to a chase car to tail you, perhaps clock you on the old speedometer (unmarked state police cars are becoming harder to spot).

I use one.

Saved my butt numerous times. If I do get stopped however, in between the time the cop stops and is coming up to my car, that radar detector gets hidden! (why tempt them into giving you that ticket for sure??)

The theory is that cops drive with radar on all the time, so you'll detect it far away. The reality is sometimes they'll just flip it on when they meet you, so you have no advance notice.

That's how a lot of speeders with detectors get tickets. Has happened to me.

BUT... they do help. For example, I dont know if it's legal in this MN county where I work, but the frickin' cops sit by the side of the road with no lights on. I mean, even when it's dark!! Seems to reek of entrampment to me.

However, my radar has saved me by going off in plenty of time before reaching their "disabled" cars. ha..... f'ers!!

Buy a CB radio, they ARE full proof!!

Geo, where I live the State police use radar and Lazer! RaDAR while shooting & driving, and Lazer for sitting! like I said before radar is just not worth the money! Lazer can always be cheated!

As for unmarked (Plane Rapters) the cb radio will take care of that!

Better to be safe than sorry
When I get to the open road, I set my cruise control to 9 mph over the speed limit and go. In Michigan, most areas that speed will be about 79 mph. Don't need to go voer that speed.

we used to have one...i thought it was great! we missed it when it stopped working inexplicably. i don't know if they're legal in MD, but i doubt it... just as long as you stash it somewhere if necessary, and don't pipe up that it's "hided," a la treebait, you should be fine. hee hee!

without a radar detector, i've never been pulled over, even though i go at least 10 or 15 over on long trips. i attribute it to my psychic abilities...i always seem to find myself behind a slow driver all of a sudden while passing a cop on the side of the road. bizarre!

When I'm driving and my mother-in-law is along, she watches the speed-o-meter, and frequently asks "How fast can you go, before you get a ticket?"

Anyone wanna borrow my mother-in-law?

Well I(a Deputy Sheriff) can tell you that we have hand held lazer and radar "guns". So that an officer stands and points it at the car that is speeding, pulls the trigger and gets your speed instantly. There is nothing about getting a steady speed. The speed read out changes as the speed of the vehicle changes. A detector would never warn you, unless you are one of the cars behind the target. Same with car mounted radar, they don't send out a signal all the time, just when the trigger is pushed. But I can tell you that most cops will write a ticket if they see or hear the detector!

In Osceola County we don't stop a car until it is going 16 mph over the limit; except in school zones.

Yeah go for the bel vector 985... it'll save your a$$. Although, like some have said, travelling on a lonely road with no other cars you will get a ticket. They don't have to have anything on so they wait and pop it on, or gun ya and by then your done. But in traffic with a good one it will help!!

In the school they teach you how to estimate the speed by just looking. To pass the class at the end they drive cars past you and you have to say the speed. We had to get 8 out of 10 correct (within 3 mph). I have not notice any of us picking a certain color (red) more than any other color of car either.

Take it from a speed nut,VALENTINE 1 is the best..
This is the best radar and laser detector on the market. The valentine 1 is by far the best device ever built to help you beat a tiket. To see more on the valentine 1 go to:

This detector has been unanimously chosen as the best by numerous car magazines and countles sportcar aficionados. Take it from me, it is well worth the money. Good Luck.
I believe they will even pay for your ticket if you get one while using the V1.

It does make sense as wrapper, like a unmarked candy wrapper, but who cares any way, Ill call it what I want and you all call it what you want, DEAL!

If a scanner is what you are looking for then...
UNIDEN Bear tracker is the one you want. The original is a in-dash unit with every known frequency in the scanner. They have come out with some new bear trackers, even a portable, plug in the cig lighter and put it on top of the dash unit(this is a tough one to find). Look them up at uniden.com

Its plain wrapper! And normally one would state the color of the car as well when alerting others. like it's a brown or red wrapper or even the make of the car. IND. State Troopers run Camaro's, Berreta's, Lumina's etc all the time. Just like cops on bikes are called 'Evil Kenevils' (sp). You'll see alot of those types across the river from Louisville in Indy.

I've had the same Escort detector since the mid-80's. One of those big heavy ones that nobody wants to steal. I must say it has work for me. I speed but not by much. One time I got pulled over into the scale house aka 'ckicken coup' and the little fat man behind the mirrored glasses(trooper wannabe) and his tall goofy trainee gave me and my truck the 3th degree. Everything but a cavity search. They found my old detector stuff away deep in my briefcase. Brought it in and gave me the 4th degree. After a bunch of 'yes sirs' and heavy arse kissin I was out the door and back on the road with my lucky detector to boot. For that I'm a grateful.

Aren't those Valentines made by one of those guys that left Cincinnati Microwave(Escort and Solo makers)?

They make lazer detectors that work pretty well. Kind of pricey though. If you do spend good money on one, go for a in the dash model. The display will mount in your dash board and look like it's part of the car. Radar scramblers are very illegal, so don't get caught. CB is by far the most powerful and the most fun, but only on major highways with truck traffic. If you want a good laugh, travel the interstate late at night with the CB on.

I use one, and its saved me a lot of times. Except for when we left WY, 45 minutes heading back to CA. I was looking at a metallic beige car with ski racks, I thought. Then the radar went off just as he got close enough to notice those were lights on top. I normally look for black or white cars. I'm hoping it doesn't go on my record.

Between home and the Sierras, we know where they hide, so we know where to slow down, and where we can speed up. We usually drive at night, so if we see tail lights go off, we know what's ahead. I try not to go over 9mph over, when I'm on probation. CA has traffic school, so you can't get a ticket for 18 mo. SnowDude got a ticket 1 day short of his probation period, and his insurance went up $400 yr.

My truck goes 100 and it doesn't feel like it. I use cruise as much as possible because of that.

I'm not good at playing girl to get out of a ticket. My friends all do it.

Snow Nymph, perhaps you are not to worry.

Ive been picked up like SEVEN times since I started working in MN in March of 2000. The only ticket I got was from the state patrol (radar was quickly hidden). I woulda argued that one, BUT I'd been to a Christmas party earlier. Had like 3 beers between say 7 p.m. and 11 p.m....... and then had stopped at office for an hour. STILL.... didn't think arguing and potentially getting a breath test was worth it!! eeeeeeeeek!!!

Anyhoo, the county sheriff's dept. covers Highway 52 between a couple towns. They are hired as police in them. So I am always meeting them. Have been pulled over for equipment violations. ANYTHING. Probably mostly because I have Iowa plates on my car?? (OK, I suppose they don't see that right away... but STILL..)

Last time I was pulled over, the young guy asked me if I'd been picked up lately. (I was snickering inside thinking, yes, you would be No. 7) I told him about the highway patrol ticket I got in January of this year.

He went back, ran it through the computer system, came back and said, "It shows your last ticket was in '97." (Or some such thing.)

HUH??? I think when you are in different states, they don't necessarily pass information back and forth..... or at least not in any kind of timely manner.

You would think it would be really easy with computers.

I know a friend a few years back who moved from Iowa to MN and had a pending DWI going on his insurance, losing license for awhile etc. He somehow got a WI license quick... which he then used to get his MN license. It worked at the time.

(I do think years later it caught up to him. Not sure how bad penalties were then, or if there were even any.)
