“OK, a really quick question.. How is the backpacking in October in PA... Do I have to worry about being shot by the local hunters? How cold does it get?

“Hunters, not sure. Deer season isn't until November.

Weather, varies widely in October. Nights can drop below freezing, esp. in later October, but I remember only one year out of the past 20 that we had snow in October, here in southeast PA. Further north, colder sooner, and I presume a better chance of snow.

What part of PA are you looking to backpack in? Others on this board are far more experienced in PA backpacking: JMitch, RichB, MSilver... They will jump in with more info.”

“First day of hunting season, for any/every type of wildlife, is the bad day to go out, cause that's the day most of the bozos plan to hit the woods. The first week I'd hesitate too. After that, it's pretty much the hardcore hunters who are more seasoned and are much more safer to be around.

“Almost everyone recommends that you not hike during the the big game rifle season for deer and bear. In the past this always took place in Nov. That's the time I won't hike in PA. woods even for a dayhike except on Sunday. There's no hunting on Sunday in PA. As far as weather you'll generally be fine with 3 season gear, just check the forecast for the area you plan to hike, dress for the conditions and you'll have a good time.”

“Many areas in PA. are really dry now because of severe drought this summer. Clinton county is very dry in the North Central area. I'm sure you'll find water down low, but in the higher elevations it may be scarce. There's a big storm coming Fri. with heavy rain expected so this will probably change things, I hope. We need the rain.”
