I just ordered my new snowboard and I am so stoked!! I got the Burton Feelgood. Don't bash it too much since I already ordered it, please. Just wondering, any of you board? And where's the best place to go in or around North Carolina? I need somewhere close to get out every so often, ya know?

Snownymph snowboards, she's on the left coarst thought. NC? Most people I knew in MD would go to Pennsylvania.

I'm in Tennessee. PA is a little far for a weekend trip.

DUDE!!!! Burton ROCKS!!! We demo'd the Burton BMC and got ours the next week! Even our jackets are Burton's!

Don't know how the riding is back east, but Mammoth Mtn (CA) is awesome!

Have fun with the Feelgood!

In November we'll start adding our new Snowboarding trips for the 2002-2003 season. Click on Mammoth Mountain.

I'm lovin' the comments! Pathman...Ober Gatlinburg? I was hoping for something more. I've heard a lot about Sugar Mountain, NC and Snowshoe, NC. Anyone got any experience there?

Boarder reporting in (I ski also...I like them both). I own a 11 year old Sims 1/2 Pipe with brand new Flow bindings. I board, ski and bpack in Quebec 99.99% of the time.

Good For You
I purchased the first Burton Air of the first snowboard line with both P-Tex and metal edges. I also have my older Sims Swallowtail having no metal edges, velcro toe binding, fastex ankle binding, and a 7" "Swallowtail" behind the back foot.

Sure would like to have a brand spankin new one.

Pineneedles: You're a woman? MY fiancee has that board and I think it's designed for women.

I'm not digging my Burton Custom bingings too much. Need something stiffer since my heel's got too much flex. I want some give but I've got a wide board so something stiffer to make it more responsive would be good.

I learned to snowboard on Beech Mtn. in NC. It's probably your best option in the state, it's the highest elevation ski slopes on the East Coast and they have 100% snow making ability. Only down side is the short slopes compared to anything out west. But it's good for east coast. Check out their site: SkiBeech
I like to check out their Web Cam once the cold weather arrives, cool to watch the snow being built up, or if there has been a storm can see the stuff coming down.

Ya'll are helpful. I'm planning a few weekend trips already. Has anyone ever been to Sugar Mountain, NC? Just curious. I've heard some good things about it. I've never been skiing/boarding in the east. Guess it can't compare to the Rockies, eh?

Skiing or boarding in the east are usually on hard pack and fast. In the west it's usually powdery.

They (the experts) say that you need to be a technical skier for the east (to ski over ice and control you speed), and a strong skier for the west (to push thru and stay above the pow).

I have a Burton Custom 156 cm two years old, used about 10 times that I would like to trade or sell. It's an awesome board but a little short for me. I'm looking for a 159 or 160 if anyone is interested.

Wolfmans bro, SnowDude demo'd the BMC and the Custom. It was a tough decision, but the BMC won. Both boards rock!

I checked out the Feelgood and the Custom. Went with the Feelgood 156, just cause I'd wanted it forever and knew I'd be disappointed if that's not what I got. I would have considered buying Wolfmans Custom 156 though! Oh well.

I notice everybody is a Burton fan. I guess that's b/c they're the most accessible. IMHO the best boards(if you can get your hands on them) are NeverSummer made in Denver I think.

What kind of bindings do you have on your board? 2 strap soft boot bindings? Step-in's?

Powder in the west
Stanlee,

Not all the west is powder. In the coastal states, many of the ski areas in the cascades (west slope) get too much moisture to be real powdery. Local snow is less than affectionately called "cascade concrete". You want powder, you find areas on the east slope of the cascades, or you go to the sierras.

The fresh soft stuff takes more work to move in than powder, and when it sets it sets hard, although we don't tend to get quite the ice as the east does.

After spending a year working at a ski resort in CO. and then coming back east, I find it very difficult (motivationally) to ride. The snow (powder) out west was so incredible and the weather (sunny) it was very easy to get spoiled. East coast skiing is smaller(mtns), more expensive and crowded, and conditions you can't even compare. Best place I snowboarded here is Stowe and Jay Peak. I had my ticket taken away once at Jiminy Peak (Mass.) for riding through the trees. Out west, you basically take your life into your own hands. They don't care what you do.

I got Burton's Lexa bindings. They are 2 strap bindings. I love them, so far anyway. I've never skiied or boarded in the east, so I know I'm spoiled by the fresh powder of the Rockies, but I'll take what I can get. Any boarding is better than no boarding.

Believe me, there is plenty of Sierra Cement to go around. I wear wrist guards. If you really want the pow, you have to watch the forecasts and then hit the slopes when conditions are favorable for pow. Pow days are the best but they are not a regular thing in the Sierra. Gotta head to Utah for pow all the time. It's just a lot colder there. However, they don't get those 75 degree, boarding in your shorts and t-shirt days that CA gets either.

On powder days, the top is closed, so you'll find us in the trees. Most fair weather skiers go back to the condos, so we have the place to ourselves. We had a few days last season where every run was fresh tracks. That was a fun day! Mammoth Mtn kicks all forms of a$$!!!!
