Taking the "sense" out of censorship!
&#@$orship!

I was just replying on a thread I started at backp*cker.com to announce the Flags on the 48 event that I posted and reported on here. While I was going through the thread, I cracked up: the name of the mountain I climbed was censored. It's funny how some things never seem obscene until they are "censored" (as when Howard Stern started referring to a certain lefty lawyer as William PrivatePartsler).

I am horribly shocked and distressed by what I saw on that board and will never be able to think about Mount Hancock in the same way!!!

yeah, ped,,,and when I spoke out against that kind of censorship over there, they claimed they wanted to be in a place where they wouldn't be offended by words that were "offensive"

Obviously none of them have looked at the Declaration of Independence very much.

censorshi*
Chili,

This did remind me of your discussion with people over there.

BTW: What was the name of that great Patriot who said: "I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend to your death my right to be offended by it."

I will have to look that up, ped, but I think it was Violin that posted a great quote on the other board to that effect. It may have been a quote from Jefferson.

No, really, it's the Backpacker Magazine site. Watch out, though. They've got Po-jama People over there. We've got a few here as well, but such is life.

Anyway, I'm not outraged (although you'd think the moderator might check to see what his computer had censored)... but it did crack me up to see that I was hiking "North Han****"

Hey Buddur... I guess there are a lot of things you might not want to say about that hike (even if true).

Me too.
Yeah, I was telling folks about the wood****s on the Dolly Sods over there. The censoring program can'd differentiate whether the word stands along or is part of a larger word.

Steve came up with some lame excuse. Guess the program thought I was talking about some female sex device.

The thing is, everytime the program does that it just highlights that part of the word when it would otherwise not even be noticed. Du-uh!

"I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend to your death my right to be offended by it."

Sounds real good, doesn't it? I used to abide by that creed. Then those same sops, who I spoke up for so that they may have a forum, shouted down my opportunity to have a forum....

Now my creed is, if you want to be able to speak freely, count on me being able to speak freely also. Plan on supporting my right to speak freely, and I'll do the same for you.

Gee UK... I should hope that it sounds terrible (or even better, funny). Still, I get your point. I've had people (from a certain left-wing feminist view point) tell me to shut up because my speech was "silencing" them.
pedxing

Unfortunately, free speech no longer seems so free. People seem to think if free speech is offensive, then it should be banned. Personally, I have no idea whether that was what the founders intended when they laid out the second amendment.

Geo: You're thinking that Founder's thought it might be a good idea that people had to worry about getting shot if they offended someone?

In response to free speech and freedom of the press Ol' Ben Franklin advocated "Freedon of the Cudgel."

In short someone who disaparages you (especially in the press) you retain the right to (paraphrase) waylay him in the night with a stout oaken cudgel and beat some sense into him.

They drafted the Second Amendment so the censors could retain the right to arm themselves to shoot the people who they think abuse the First Amendment.

Hey, backpacker.com banned Kybackpacker because he "dared" answer a woman's question about personal hygene on the trail, a subject he taught to female soldiers in the military. Backpacker.com won't let you say "woodcock", or "skyscraper". A woman on backpacker.com can use the word "dyke" where a man can't. You figure.
