Horse poop on the trail

“I'm thinking of bringing my family for a walk in the Great Smoky Mountains. But I've heard they let horses on the trails and am scared one of us might trip on a branch or rock and fall face first into a pile of poop. What should I do?”

Could be worse, could be PEOPLE POOP!

Someone told me horses don't really digest a large percentage of their food, so there are animals that actually eat horse poop. So, if you're worried about bacteria and such, it's probably not a hooooge problem. dood”

On my last trip to the Smokies with katibug and friends, we had hiked through so much horse$hit for the first two days, that when we finally reached a part of the trail where horses were not allowed, we all voted to crap in the area where the 'horse people' had to picket their steeds. We didn't, of course, but the thought did provide a small measure of satisfaction...”

It's pretty bad in June, too. Something about a temp of 120 just sends it wafting through the air. And you get to continue to experience it's aroma for about 8-10 switchbacks. It's an experience that cannot be fully appreciated from description alone.”

“It's just like anything else. You have to condition them before they get out on the trail. Go to the zoo and ask the keeper for some horse poop. Stick the little ones' heads in it every day. Preferably without warning, since there's no telling when they will trip and fall in poop on the trail. That way, they'll be ready when it really happens "out there."”

I'd definitely vote for December or January. We did the Grandview trail that time of year: it was about 40 degrees at the rim, 70 at the river (and there was a definite lack of mule 'evidence' unlike BA and South Kaibab).

We spent our second night in a stone shelter.....hmmmm, Something-or-other Gap.
The next night was on Mt Sterling.

When I dropped my pack near the shelter I nearly dropped it in a pile of human $hit!

I flagged it with a stick and soon discovered that there were several more heaps.
